Day of the Dead: Bloodline (2017)
Just plain bad
An attempt to make a another zombie movie follow the great work of G.A. Romeo "dead films" but failed, here are the reasons: The idea of intelligence zombie (Max) and the built up story from there are quite hilarious, annoying, unbearable. The same feeling with (smart zombie dad) in 28 weeks later. Bad script with boring dialogue, empty characters and the copy of autocratic from the original film. The ending was pretty bad and they even trying to fool all the audience by the scene that the little girl and our Zoe ran toward base door full of zombie but nothing happen (fast forward to 1:14:30 and you will see). The film itself just not worth to get the title "Day of the dead"
The Void (2016)
Skipped the trailer & Don't expected too much
First of all, The Void gave the audience a dark and thrilling ride by the out of the formula plot, astounding way to build-up tension and unveiled the truth. As a independent horror, The Void did it job by brought back the atmosphere of the iconic 80s horror with decent goods but, unfortunately it contains a few disappointments
The movie itself reminded me with Baskin ( a Turkish horror back to 2015 – which i also checked the trailer and to be filled with great excitement ), this movie is in that same expectation. To be honest, I don't like the way they used the clever-shots to ignore the must have/detail gore or bloody scene (pay attention you'll find its). Furthermore, the ending obviously placed more questions to the story line in the end, which is the time all the mysteries and unanswered questions have to be explained: The " silent boy " just craw out of that underground killing floor in somehow and stacked the monster behind ??? The remaining members of the cult only show up two for scarification, then leave without reason in the end ???
Okay! Open ending, fair acting, creepy moments and mysterious cult but the movie carried some holes in the story- telling and failed to deliver the unique idea to all the highly- expect horror lovers.
Kong: Skull Island (2017)
A blockbuster monsters movie & thrilling adventure
So I guess my review is the 2nd Vietnamese review on here so far. Yes! It's my country-Vietnam which on-screen in 70% of the film duration with the magnificent view from Ha Long bay, Ninh Binh & Quang Binh. During the 1 month countdown to the premiere, the present and advertising hit the mass media in my country so hard that almost everyday. I actually pay attention to this movie about 2 years ago when it only a 2017 title on IMDb , before the whole Hollywood crews start filming The movie take the audience back to the 1973 in the withdraw of US Army from the Vietnam war. The start look promising, the battle between the Sky Devils fleet and Kong definitely get you edge of your seat( strongly recommend the Dolby Atmos sound and 2D only for better experience-just my opinion). The film then catch-up with gripping, fast-paced and appear to be little low on plot. The iconic Kong of all time now is the king of skull island and look great than ever. The giant buffalo and the view of endless field, the village & the splendid beauty of Ha Long gain my respect more than ever. The fight in the dead valley is quite cinematic and heroic with Tom Hiddleston, Samuel L. Jackson came to the crash-site with full of revenge and would do anything just to take out Kong. I understand the whole fleet lost put him to this point but really deep in his mind is a soldier cant leave the war. There many funny dialogue between Marlow & Brooks, Mills and Cole (the impressive one with the AK47) which made the audience laughing over and over. The final fight is so impressive and full of tension, Kong vs the big one Skull Crawler. Kong Skull Island is a highly recommend movie for everyone with just some negative argument for the plot and the character development. On the other hand the movie is great, well direct by Jordan Vogt- Roberts with the A-line cast, outstanding graphics, awesome Kong and open up the Monster universe in the after credit. The director announce with the public to came living in Ho Chi Minh city because he love Vietnam and want to make more great movies here-that gains another respect from me. In the end, the movie will bring all the goods, beauty of Vietnam nature to the world.
The Shallows (2016)
A good flick about survival
Firstly, the movie star by the journey of 1 American girl travel to the tropical island which have a fantastic view and great landscape ( filmed mostly in Australia ). That is the first success of the film by enchant the audience with beautiful beach, awesome waves challenge the 3 skilled suffers, our main female character-Blake Lively also has a nice blonde hair and charming body
The story goes on, memories about Nancy's mother made her to go further to catch the final wave of the day. The first victim of the great white shark was a old whale and then Nancy became the moving target by gone into the hunting territory of it. The shark attacked, Nancy got hurt and stranded on a small rock. Wounded, hopeless by every attempt to get- off the rock, trying for help or warning is useless , one by one: the drunk man, the 2 suffers became the bait of the shark. Night to day, from the low tide to high tide there are only her, the seagull and the shark waiting out there. Desperately, she record all her final words to her younger sister and father by a GoPro camera and then thrown it away
The cat & mouse game finally end with the well- done script which reminds me how the Rogue (2007) end and I assumed that it definitely pleased the audience . Last but not least, the song Bird set free by Sia is a perfect way for the ending, I really like it! Nancy got recovered; once again came to the beach but this time with her sister & papa. Nancy's mother might passed away but Nancy always gave her the most strongest love.
The Stakelander (2016)
The sequel will let you down
I hope my review will help you guys, if you are the fan of the prequel Stake Land and then think twice before watching this! It was the couple of days before "Tet"- a traditional holiday in my country, i came to the DVD store looking for some good stuffs and then i found it. Wow they made the sequel! Amazing, i was really excited cause Stake Land was one of my favorites vampire movies (along with the Blade series and Daybreakers) I watched it on the morning of "Mung 5", the fifth day of Tet.First of all, the beginning was acceptable and then after 20 minutes everything gone wrong. The slots broke down, the conversation between the characters is boring and unnecessary. The runaway from the Brotherhood take too much time, the film turn into slow process with the flashback from our 2 main characters. The ending is the most disappointed in 80 minutes of this film, Martin seeking for revenge but when The Mother and vampire attack he has to wait for Mister to lure The Mother in to fight. The fight end-up quickly but seriously the fighting scene look so fake and the equipment, the backstage, also the CGI graphic throughout the film keep me questioning about the budget of this film. I actually has a very good impression and enjoyable time watching the first film by Nick Damici but this one is not. Last but not least, the Stakelander ruined my feeling about one of the best vampire horror in the recent years, i hope they could make a stop after this or else they could make the next mistake just like 20th Century Fox with Wrong Turn sequel.
