No Moral Compass
25 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Good - episode and season story lines are good, kept watching cuz I wanted to know how it turns out.

Good - acting, sets, costumes, etc.

Good - continues in Roddenberry's tradition of addressing social justice issues. (If you don't like that, don't watch ST!).

Bad - Burnham character in S1E1 was a very unlikable loose cannon, a liability to the entire Federation and all persons in it. By S4 she had transformed to a responsible person who has learned from her elders. I respect that they tried to fix what they broke in S1, and that's why I've continued watching, but this transition from Starfleet officer to unrepentant criminal who belongs in a penal colony and back to Starfleet officer is hard to swallow. It violates the integrity of Starfleet, well established in the franchise.

Bad - incorporating emotional health issues is good, but it is way overdone.

Worse - good wordsmithing, but bad context. E.g. Good dialogue between two characters, but wrong place and time; when frantically trying to handle a crisis with a clock ticking down is not the right time to talk about their feelings. E.g. Good speech delivered at the appropriate time and place, but by the wrong character who had no business being there at all, much less talking.

Worst - no consequences. Start an intragalactic war by desecrating a holy site and murdering a prophet, assault a superior officer, mutiny, murder, piracy, kidnapping, theft, insubordination, treason, espionage, conspiracy to commit genocide - no problem as long as you have friends in high places doling out Get Out Of Jail Free Cards to their friends like candy, while poor sap Mudd gets life. We already have that here; I'd like to envision a better world where justice is applied equally to all.

ST has always presented a better society (some say overly idealistic), what we'd like the future world to be. I do not want to live in a world where there is no rule of law, no justice, no consequences, no discipline, just every person does what is right in their own eyes. That is not a better world. It is Mad Max in space. It is chaos, corruption, and dystopia on a galactic scale. This is the first ST I would not have let my kids watch, because it does not contextualize crime and judicial corruption as clearly being bad.

Last Straw - While ST has never shied from tackling hard social justice issues, it has never been overtly political. That ended with S4. Flagrantly endorsing a real life politician currently running for office. The producers have dragged the good name of Star Trek down into the toxic cesspool of contemporary politics.

The writers are like a bunch of teenage wannabe's dribbling out what they believe are cool ideas and haphazardly stitching them together into a hot mess of a script, without an adult in the room to say "that won't work because ..." or "that'll work but we need to do it this other way ...", or "that's crossing a line, we need to dial it back a bit ...". It seems there's no consequences to the writers/producers IRL, just as there are none in the show.

Paramount, please pull the plug before this abomination drags down the entire franchise. It is irredeemable at this point.

Season Enders continue to be the worst
23 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Once again we have a happy happy gooey ending at the expense of credibility and integrity. Choices have consequences, except in ST Discovery where all is forgiven at EOS. Mutiny, treason, recklessly endangering billions of lives - meh, whatever, no worries.

Hitting hard social issues is fine, ST always has, but flagrantly endorsing a real life politician is unacceptable. I've liked this show thus far, clearly more than most, but they crossed a line. Please, Paramount, fix it or pull the plug before this show drags down the whole franchise.

Brilliant

10/10 for Gervais acting alone. Top tier, A-list, Sir Anthony Hopkins level of acting greatness. Add in funny, touching, and smartly written, and it's 10+++. You'll love, laugh, and learn. I'd be delighted to hang with Derek and ponder his endless, fascinating questions.

Worse than a slideshow of your neighbor's vacation
15 January 2022
I haven't read the book, but I am guessing that this is a horrible adaptation of a good book. Very often a good book has intangible happenings, thoughts and emotions, that are very difficult to translate to film. Perhaps that is the case here.

None of the elements of a good story - no protagonist/antagonist, just an unlikeable main character and a mixed back of supporting characters. No story line, just a meandering mess that goes nowhere. No conflict of consequence. No character change or development, just an unlikeable person from beginning to end. If a good story gradually reveals puzzle pieces that, in the end, form a picture, then this one is a pile of unrelated and disconnected pieces that form nothing but a hodgepodge mess. Just when there'd be some bit of dialogue or incident (zero action) that I thought might develop into something - nope, just another unrelated loose end that goes nowhere. From beginning to end, this movie was nothing. Instead of wasting two hours of your life watching this trainwreck, spend it outside watching the grass grow and clouds drift by. Or read the book; it's probably really good. Sharknado has a better story than this waste of celluloid.

Two stars cuz Olivia Colman was outstanding. If you're a Colman superfan, by all means watch it. You'll be pleased with her superb performance.

Low budget fluff
21 December 2021
On par with a low budget Saturday night SyFy flick. Like most network dramas, horrible script but good acting and a good SciFi premise. Lower your expectations and enjoy some cinematic cotton candy. Don't overthink it, and focus on the acting and story interactions.

Horrible script starts bad and gets worse
23 June 2021
Warning: Spoilers
MAJOR SPOILERS

Great acting, directing (obviously), sfx, story idea. SciFi requires a suspension of disbelief. But I can't believe Ridley Scott directed this trainwreck of a script. All of the holes in this script were unnecessary, could've been written much better without changing the story, just some changes to the dialogue that a 5th grader could write. Just a few examples.

We are to believe that these characters, prior to the voyage, don't know each other or the ship layout. Introducing characters and setting in a believable manner is Story Writing 101. Yet this writer can't handle something so simple. Bad start.

Two crew are left stranded on a planet where we know something bad happened to other visitors, cap'n sees a sensor anomaly near them, they freak out, he goes off to get laid. Next morning they've lost comm with them and instead of checking the recording of their visor feed (it IS recorded, right?), they just wander out into danger. Without weapons. Cuz scientists don't like them. So simple - check the recording, see something bad happened, go out to investigate. Cap'n gets laid some other time (or never, because it added nothing to the story). Same story. Believably written.

Shaw has an alien in her womb, goes into Autodoc to have it removed just before it goes all John-Hurt-at-the-dinner-table on her. Runs around the ship near naked, doesn't tell anyone about the alien in her gut, no one asks why she's nekkid or has a patched up gash in her ab. Coupla lines of dialogue could have her tell someone or they ask, w/o changing the story flow. Then continue with the high-speed chaos. Woulda fit perfectly.

Could go on with so many more. I can see 7* based on everything else, but it was soured by a horrible script.

Watch it cuz you love the franchise, Ridley Scott, actors (Rapace puts in an A+ performance, as always), and are curious about Alien backstory (which it provides, coupled with Alien Covenant, a much better film).

I do hope the third prequel is eventually made, and is more akin to Covenant than Prometheus.

Good story that wasn't transitioned well to live action. But any flick starring MJ is a min 6.

Great movie
30 May 2021
I don't dole out 8's easily, but this movie is fantastic on several layers. It crosses genres without being a schizophrenic mess. It has emotional depth, raises contemporary and difficult moral/social issues, plenty of humor, likable characters, great acting, tightly written, expertly directed.

A+ acting and production. Too much suspension of disbelief. Mostly derivative. Not outstanding, but a fun flick.

Decent remake
19 May 2021
Basically a remake of Evil Dead with a bit of Truman Show. Literally 100x the budget bought better production quality and A list actors. But it's still just a remake of a formulaic horror flick, with a twist (no spoiler) and hella Easter eggs from horror flick history. It's pretty weenie to not give credit to Evil Dead, so it lost a few stars for the dis of the genre original.

Good flick
10 May 2021
Good story, well done, great acting. Excellent addition to the franchise, on par with the others. Not a good standalone, it needs the first four for context. An all star cast, many GoT alums, puts in outstanding performances. Kate Beckinsale, the main reason to watch these films, has earned her place in the pantheon of bada$$ female leads with the likes of Sigourney Weaver, Milla Jovivich, and Linda Hamilton. I hope she can carry this franchise much further, providing that whatever fans didn't like about this one can be fixed. Vampires don't age? Neither has Kate Beckinsale. Not one day.

Horrible script
8 May 2021
Only watch this if you find yourself stuck in a global pandemic horror flick. The key to enjoying low budget SyFy flicks is low expectation. This film is ruined by a horrible script with no plot, far worse than usual. The cast is stacked with veterans of low budget films, all very good at their craft and deserving better opportunities. Sfx are par for the genre. Directing, cine, sets, etc are all good. I was only able to finish it cuz of the good acting.

Slow start
2 May 2021
First pass I only made it to e2. It was boring and going nowhere. Tried again cuz I have to know about those black helicopters. It drags along with too much yak yak yak and not enough plot movement. Actors are good though. Towards the end of the season it develops some meat and is worth watching. Basically, this whole season could've been done in half as many episodes. S2 needs some traction, hit the gas, and pick up the pace. It's a zombie show, not a talk show.

Watch both seasons - spoiler
26 March 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This is a great show, but only if you watch both seasons. In season 1 I kept waiting for a change of character in Wallace, as in any good story, but it never happened. He ended the season the same self-righteous *&^* as at the beginning, refusing to accept any responsibility for his deliberate ignorance of what had been happening around him (money's rolling in, don't ask too many questions), treating the whole world like they were all against him, unappreciative of those who worked so hard and sacrificed to help him, and unwilling to take responsibility for how his actions affected others. An anti-hero I found it impossible to root for. The character transformation I was expecting in season 1 finally happened in season 2. You'll have to watch it yourself, but by the end of S2 he became a likable character, hero, and champion, and IMHO justice prevailed. Without season 2, I'd rate it a 5.

Fun story, great actors
2 December 2020
Warning: Spoilers
If you're expecting historical fiction, you'll be disappointed. It uses a historical event as a rough framework on which to hang a purely fictional fantasy story (no shade to Druidism, past or present). Outstanding performance by Eleanor Cox, from helpless lost crying little girl to full grown, powerful confident woman. That's a demanding role and she nailed it.

Like watching grass grow
27 October 2020
Another example of Gimple reverse-Midas touch. Coming-of-age story meets zombie apocalypse? Like green beans on ice cream. Who would embark on a doomed road trip wearing a 3pc suit and lugging a bowling ball? Four teens sharing a single brain cell. Idk who the target audience is, but they missed, horribly. I won't blame the actors; developing talent needs direction, which they obviously didn't get. I hope this doesn't ruin their careers. I hope it's enough of a train wreck to finally evict Gimple from the TWD universe before he destroys the entire franchise.

Great Campbell Horror Comedy
29 September 2020
Bruce Campbell has grown a lot as an actor since Evil Dead, and is hella fun to watch in any role any time. This has the same feel as Evil Dead but with higher production value. Not campy so-bad-it's-good, but a truly high quality horror comedy. Great supporting cast with well-developed characters and Lawless providing nova-like star power. It doesn't need a season to find its groove; it hit the ground running from S1E1. Great soundtrack is icing on this bloody cake. If you like Campbell, Lawless, zombies, or horror comedy, you'll love it.

As low budget camp as it gets. Down there with Plan 9 and Killer Tomatoes. And just as enjoyable if you lower expectations to zero and laugh at it, not with it.

Amazingly strong cast for a low budget film. Great performances by all. Premise is good, script ok, plot flow full of holes, production okay for the budget. Fun flick but don't expect a blockbuster.

A dissenting opinion
6 August 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Good writing has engaging characters in an interesting story infused with metaphor, irony, moral ambiguity, and other nuances, wrapped around a pertinent issue. This movie has none of that. It is a haphazard mess of unrelated metaphors and irony, badly scripted, with a meandering plot. If it's intended to be a parody of bad avant-garde Eurotrash cinema, it took two hours to accomplish what could have been done in one. The only laughs were at a flamingo and camel wandering around in the background. The depictions of horrid cruelty to animals were disturbing. It dragged on so long I wish it had been my own eyes (and ears) that had been gouged out. By the end of the movie I didn't give a flip about any of the characters, nor how it ended, only hoping that it would mercifully end as soon as possible. We continued watching hoping that something interesting would happen at some point, that it would actually go somewhere or come to some sensible conclusion. We only threw good time after bad. But hindsight is 20/20. Do yourself a favor; skip this movie, and spend two hours doing something more enjoyable, like chewing on tin foil.

Decent Story
27 March 2016
A lot more violence and not as much comedy as I had expected from the previews. If this was an attempt at dark comedy, it was overshadowed by the excessive graphic violence.

The sleeper agent theme and the love story arc have been done many times before. This movie brings them together into a decent but predictable story.

The stereotyped characters may have been at attempt at parody, but they did not come off as funny. They just contributed to the predictability.

The best part of the movie is the love story and the excellent acting of Jesse Eisenberg and Kristen Stewart.
