Vikings (2013)
Decent story and acting, but lame overall script
For a show with such promise, the essential scenes in this series, depicting battle and conflict, consistently lack any historical accuracy, as the Vikings are portrayed as some sort of super humans that always kill 100 Englishmen in an instant, or are essentially unscathed by English swords or arrows. Please, they may have been fierce warriors, but the battle scenes are so one-sided as to make the entire series unbelievable and ridiculous. A few simple script adjustments, with strategic or historical information about WHY they won battles, instead of these handful of guys simply wiping out 10 times their number at will, would have made this series FAR more enjoyable. As it is, the battle scenes are laughable, and evidence poor writing that makes the whole scenario unbelievable and biased.
Nouvelle-France (2004)
Interesting period piece
While the overall production lacks the feel of a first-rate movie, I found this film highly engaging in that the female lead and some supporting performances were just excellent. The relationship between the mother and daughter was as strong as I have ever seen portrayed, with excellent performances by both. Unfortunately, the cast of usual suspects, reprising roles from other similar movies, detracted immensely from the film. They should have just found new faces. I'm a history buff, and rarely enjoy romance driven films.. but this one actually caught my attention and I liked it. With better performances from the "famous" actors, and a little less sap in the music score, this could have been a far more enjoyable film. But overall the two lead characters gave outstanding performances, and I really enjoyed the story and cinematography.
