Silent Night (2023)
Mixed Feelings...
The mantra of screenwriting is "Show, don't tell." If you can find a way to show it, that's how it should be done. Yet, almost every Hollywood movie seems to do the opposite, especially big budget movies. What up with that? This movie, however, was all show. Did that work? Kind of. Parts of the movie were very effective with no dialouge but other parts felt awkward and disjointed without it. I believe that's why there needs to be a mix of both. This film begged for some dialogue to fill in some spots and if they wanted to keep it the whole no speaking thing, it should have been 20 minutes shorter. It would have behooved the film to do less setup and more payoff. Also, characters like the Detective could have been removed and it wouldn't have changed anything, other than the deus ex machina, which could have been avoided if the character wasn't there in the first place. The action was great but needed more of it.
Skyscraper (2018)
It's clear to me...
That many people seem to have an agenda when it comes to rating movies on this site. That they are looking for a reason to justify giving a movie a "1" rating. Now, let's be honest. Few, and I mean very few movies are an actual 1. Conversely, very few movies are an actual 10. Years ago was considered the Golden Age of Cinema. Well, today, apparently, is the Golden Age of Hyperbole.
If you went into this expecting anything other than what you got, then you are the problem, not the filmmakers. This movie, like many, many others, doesn't try and hide what it is. It's an over-the-top, b*lls-to-the-wall action movie. We're you seriously expecting Oscar caliber dialouge? Acting? I mean, come the Eff on already.
This movie delivered what I wanted. A ridiculous action movie that could most likely ever happen in real life. That's what makes movies like this fun...and for all the fan boys...Die Hard would never happen in real life either. Get a grip. Geez.
RoboCop (2014)
What a surprise...
That all the Trolls are out in force review bombing this. You can hear it, right? "Hollywood is ruining my childhood because I Love the original and blah, blah, blah..." How? How does a remake ruin your childhood? It's an effing movie. Your drunken father ruined your childhood, not a remake of a movie.
I was a HUGE fan of the original when it came when I was 11. But much like mullets, parachute pants, and hair metal the original belongs in 80s.
I watched the original again the other day, for the first time in like 20 plus years, and my God, it was awful. Other than the satire, as a movie on a whole, it was bad. There is no real setup for Murphy. There is no reason to care about him. When I got shot I realized I didn't care anymore because there is zero emotional connection.
Then there's Lewis. His partner for like all of 8 hours and she recognized him as Robocop and went of her way to help him? And the acting was so over the top it was painful.
The remake trades the satire for social commentary, which works much better in 2014. They gave us a Murphy you care about when he gets blown up. They make him more human, which I think works well. Special effects aside, the script for the remake is SO much better. So is the acting.
I read some one star reviews saying the remake didn't makeyou care for Murphy or that it didn't have the emotional impact of the original. Uh, what?
You can tell those are people who regard nostoliga as being more important than truths. I get it, it's hard to let go of something you once loved. Hell, I was the BIGGEST Transformers fan as a kid; the cartoon, toys, whatever. I tried watching the original cartoon a few years ago and I couldn't even make it through two episodes. What? Because when I loved Transformers I was 8-11ish. When I re-watched it I was 45. Big difference in the mindset (at least there should be) and the way one views it.
RoboCop (1987)
Like Mullets and Parachute Pants...
This movie worked in the 80s but does not hold up well now. I was 11 when this came out and I loved it. Why? Because there was cursing and lots of blood. Also, a bad-ass Man Robot. What wasn't to love? Well, watching it again for the first time in almost 20 years, it does NOT hold up well.
While there are aspects of the film I still appreciate, like the satire, which I didn't get as a kid, the overall script is pretty bad
For instance, Murphy had no real introduction, no REAL reason to care about him when her gets killed. He was just some random guy who casually mentions he spins his gun because of his kid, then, bam, dead.
Now, I KNOW the 80's was the decade of excess and over-the-top, but my God, the acting in this is borderline farce. And then Lewis just happens to know Robocop is Murphy? A man she knew for all of a few hours? Ridiculous. And WHY did Murphy start to regain his memories? I would have loved to see more emphasis on the idea that the human mind is more powerful than a machine, or something of that ilk.
And the iorny is that most people who gush over this film are most likely viewing it through the rose colored lense of nostoliga and not what it actually is today. And they are also (most likely) the same people who hated the reboot (even though that script is much tighter) just because, well, nostoliga.
Race to Witch Mountain (2009)
Super enjoyable
I grew up watching the original movies as a kid on cable and enjoyed them, although something about the kids' faces always annoyed me, even when I was a kid, but they were fine movies. People have to keep in mind the original movie was 1975. The remake was 2009. That's 34 years. To put that in perspective, that's like a movie that came out in 1930 was remade in 1964. Do you think the 1964 crowd would have the same mentality as the 1930 crowd? Apparently some of you do, hold onto nostologia much?, but the zeitgeist changes from decade to decade and most (normal) people understand that and change with the times.
And some people complain that this movie was too "violent" for kids? Really? Ever see the Black Hole? Or the Dark Crystal? Those freaked me out as a child. Not to mention movies like Gremlins, Poltergeist, and Ghostbusters were all family friendly PG.
And you don't thing for one second that if CGI existed in 1975 that they would have utilized it to create the movie? Of course they would have. And the reasons plots have changed is because people have changed. It's the natural progression of nature.
Oh, and if you are one of those D Holes complaining about the whole global warming message, well, I wonder how many times the river's flooded your double wide by now...I'm guessing quite a few. Enjoy your sister.
Madame Web (2024)
It was a perfectly fine movie
It's seems that these days people just want to haterate movies, especially movies that are worn or POC centric.
This was a generic superhero movie hitting all the usual beats. It was a little unfocused in places and some things didn't flow like they should have, but all in all, I was never bored watching this film.
Dakota Johnson has proven she can act quite well but she has a dry delivery, which people will ether like or hate. I personally like it.
I also think they did a disservice by including the 3 young girls. It should have focused more on Cassie coming into her own with her new powers. Or maybe have only had one of the girls and focus more building their characters. I also wasn't a huge fan of the way Cassie was "blinded". It felt kind of, lazy? But ither than that, I enjoyed it.
Skyline (2010)
NO...
This is NOT the worst movie you have ever seen. And if you REALLY think it is, you've seen maybe 2 movies your entire life.
Considering it was basically made and financed by two brothers, I find it quite impressive. What have you done in on this scale or scope in your pathetic, pointless, no one will care when you die, life? Beat Through the Fire and the Flames on expert in Guitar Hero? No? Not even that?
This movie is perfectly fine. It's not amazing nor is it terrible. I rated it slightly higher to offset the "experts" ratings. Yes, some of the dialouge was not great and some if the acting was just OK, but that's the screenplay. And if it's true it went from concept to screen in less than year, that could be the reason. Another few passes on the script probably would have helped. Regardless, I was entertained enough to now want to watch the sequels.
PS...lighten the Eff up, people. Unless YOU yourself have made a movie, maybe think about reserving those 1 star ratings for your wife's cooking. Lol. Who am I kidding? Like you Trolls would be married. Save them for your $5 hooker ratings.
Press Your Luck (2019)
People hold on way to tightly...
To nostoliga. I loved the original game show when I was a kid and always hoped they would bring it back one day. Since I got rid of cable, I wasn't aware that it actually did come back. Yay. I am glad I found it because I love this new version as much as I loved the original. It's a great update for modern times while keeping the sensibility of the original. People have to learn to let of their memories of what used to be and instead focus on what they have in front of them. There's nothing wrong with this show, UNLESS, ahem, you are a sexiset a-hole (not that's ever any of those on here) and can't STAND to see all walks of life represented, like you know, real life.
I saw give this show a go. Press Your Luck.
Bluey (2018)
Cute on the surface, but...
It seems to me that it is teaching kids that it's OK to be horrible to your parents without consequences. We having been watching episodes with the grandchild and I have seen many episodes where the kids do something horrible to the parents and nothing happens to them. Like the Featherwand episode. Bingo does all these things and then at the end makes the toilet seat heavy so the Dad can't pee. On the surface it might seem funny or trite, but seriously, if my kid did something like that to me, there would be consequences. I feel like parents today aren't familiar with that word and let their children get away with everything. Yes, this show does have some "positive" messages, but I think they need to rethink how they handle the parents.
Welcome to Wrexham (2022)
Oddly Addicting
Being American, I'm not a huge football (soccer) fan. It's just not quite in the American zeitgeist yet, although it does seem to be coming more popular, especially with the younger generations. I always saw soccer players as sissies who were always falling down pretending to be hurt...that is until I saw my first professional soccer game. Through a customer, I snagged box seats at a Red Bulls game with front row seating. So, for my first match, it was amazing. And what was even more amazing....how hard these guys actually collided. No pads. No helmets. I was floored and gained a whole new appreciation for the sport.
I know that for the majority of the world, football is THE sport. And I find this show quite interesting as to how invested the local people are in the team. I mean, I know Americans who are obsessed with American Football, but I dont think to the point they'd be donating money.
It's kind of cool to see how a sport, and in particular a team, can pull a city together.
I know the term "fan" is derived from "fanatical", but sometimes that's ok. And this show is a testament to that fact.
Percy Jackson and the Olympians (2023)
MOVIES AREN'T BOOKS
Nor are TV series. You would never be able to have something on screen EXACTLY like the book. People need to realize that, accept that, and get over it. Just because what you see on the screen isn't how you imagined it your head doesn't mean the show or movie is bad. It means you're afraid of change and can't let go of childish things. So far is this show like the book? Yes, more so than the movie, but they also had to make changes to make it flow from page to screen better. Is it perfect? No, but no movie or TV show is. Nor, by the way, are they a 1. Especially just because they didn't cast someone YOU wanted in the role. Sigh. Stupidity hurts the brain.
Don't Look Up (2021)
Good message, horrible execution
This film is a prime example of when a filmmaker cares more about "making a point" than making a good film. Don't get me wrong, I agree with the message but the satire is about as subtle as a kick in the Tay Tays. Everything is, and I usually hate this term, too "on the nose". Plus, it's not really funny. There were some chuckle moments but this was far from comedic, at least to me.
I look at movies objectively, and objectively speaking, it was mediocre. It lost me when it made a hard left and Leo cheated on his wife and J Law met Tim for no real reason. Then the movie seemed to have no idea where it should go or what it should be. Then it ended.
I'm all for ripping on anti-vaxxers, climate change deniers, Trump supporters, you know, stupid people, but if it's not done with a deft hand, why bother?
Spirited (2022)
The negative reviews are whom the movie is about...
That people can't step out of their wretched lives for 2 hours to enjoy something that is bonkers and uplifting at the same time. The song "Good Afternoon" was hilarious. And the people calling it dumb probably just didn't understand what makes it funny, which is usually the case as to why someone gives a bad review: lack of understanding.
Most divisiveness comes from lack of understanding and the lack of wanting to understand, which is usually the sign of lack of intelligence as well. Intelligent people tend to want to understand things.
The songs were fun and the dance numbers were amazing. I really enjoyed this movie and it made me smile.
Leave the World Behind (2023)
More questions than answers...
The movie itself was decent and the acting was good, but too many things go unanswered. I'm not saying every movie needs to answer every question, some times ambiguity is better, but not in this instance. The animals, the son's teeth, the fact there are zero other people around, the plane crashes, the boat, the cars driving themselves, the loud noise, the shed, and more. And the fact that they can see NY from Long Island and being fairly hilly, that means they are in the Great Neck of Port Washington region or thereabouts. Houses are NOT that far apart there. I know it's a nitpick, but I hate thT in movies they don't care about geographical accuracy.
I like that they left the "enemy" ambiguous. At least they avoided familiar tropes about that. However, I do feel that movie cared more about social commentary than about being cohesive. I also did not like some of the editing. I HATE when something really cool happens, like the airplane crash, but then it doesn't show the aftermath. He just shows back up at the house, wet. I feel like the scene could have been so much more.
There are worse ways to spend 2 plus hours, but I dont think I would watch this again. Plus, the whole premise of the movie seems to be taken from the plot of Live Free or Die Hard.
Loki (2021)
Amazing show
I have enjoyed all the MCU Disney + shows for what they are: entertainment. Yes, some are better than others but overall I don't think they had one bad show.
I can't stand when people rate something a 1, especially for some of the reasons people give for doing so. I don't think think people truly understand how a 1 rating can really throw off the actual raring, but maybe that's what some people want.
I have seen MANY shows and movies in my 47 years, and I'd be hard-pressed to think of something I've seen that's ACTUALLY a 1. The hyperbole is alive and real.
If you are one of those people who do rate things a 1, keep repeating this to yourself: I Am Sofa King We Todd Ed. It should be your mantra. And if you don't get it, point further proven.
Father of the Bride (2022)
Funny how...
Lots of reviews don't realize that the Steve Martian version was a remake, yet these idiots are all crying foul because they remade the 90s version. People should really know what they are complaining about before they open their mouths, or in this case, use their fingers. These are the same people who read a headline and think they now know the "news". Sigh. So much stupid, such little space.
Superman & Lois (2021)
Based on the pilot.
I am pleasantly shocked at how much I enjoyed the pilot. Nothing felt forced, the casting is remarkably good, the dialouge is well written, and for the most part it is very well acted. I am anxious to see if it continues this way. I love the "humanizing" of Superman, showing that he's not perfect. I never got into the CW DC shows really, but saw this on HBOMax and decided to give it a chance. Glad I did.
Beachside Brawl (2022)
Love It!!!
Antonia, Brooke, and Tiffany? Uh, yes please. The Three Goddesses of cooking always put a smile on my face. The usual format (other than being on a boardwalk), but totally enjoyable. Good vibes.
Infinite (2021)
No, it's not...
The worst movie you've EVER seen. Nor is it the best. It's not a 1 and it's not a 10. People really need to lay off the hyperbole. That goes for pretty much EVERY review on this site.
If you got 2 hours to kill and want to enjoy a mindless action flick, this is not a bad choice. Yes, it's dumb. Yes, it's loud. Yes, it's story has more holes in it than anything to come out of a politician's mouth. But who cares? It's got lots of fun action. THAT'S why I watch action movies. You know, action?
It never tried to sell itself as anything more than a sci-fi/ action movie. If you expected something deep and soul changing, well....who's the goose? Spoiler alert.....it's YOU!
Iron Chef: Quest for an Iron Legend (2022)
People are idiots
But that's no real surprise. The reasons people are flaming this show are insipid. People have to learn/ acknowledge that this is NOT the Iron Chef that was on the Food Network and review it as such. I loved the old Iron Chef, but I enjoy this one even more. It doesn't take itself as seriously (it IS food after all), and The Chairman cracks me up now.
Like most reviews on IMBD, people are more concerned with nostalgia than what they are actually watching. They tend to forget that what worked 10, 20, 30 years ago isn't what would necessarily work today.
And harkening back to the whole people are idiots thing, I read one review on here condemning the show for being "woke". I guess they think any show that isn't all white is woke. But they're probably unvaccinated and, fingers crossed, will get covid and die. Then there will be a little less stupid in this world. Yay.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022)
Good, but felt disjointed
Not as good as the first one, which was solid. I can see why Scott Derikson left the project if this was the script he was given to work with. Firstly, this movie seems to contradict the end of WandaVision. She knew she messed up and was remorseful. Also, the way they introduced her in this film felt, off? Like she's in an orchard and then bam...they're in a hell like place? Didn't make sense. Then Wanda just is like yeah, I'm bad now because I want my fake kids back. And it's a nitpick, but why would the children she invented exist in other universes? I mean, I guess because plot necessity. Which speaking of that, America couldn't control her powers until she needed to, then suddenly because of something Dr. Strange says, suddenly she can? I can of hate that. And it's not like in other movies where it feels earned and warranted, this just felt lazy.
And a big pet peeve of mine in movies is bad editing that cause a disconnect, mostly from a scene ending abruptly and then the same characters are in a new location. Not a fan of that. There has to be a flow or some continuity.
I didn't dislike the movie, but it was disappointing. And Wanda being the villain seems to betray her entire story arc starting with Age of Ultron. I get that they wanted to tie this in to WandaVision, but there are so many better ways they could have done that.
I feel like Wanda should have gotten her own movie to wrap up more of WandaVision and Dr. Strange could have helped her and that's would they should have done here.
But, this is what we got. Hopefully Dr. Stange 3 will be better.
Stranger Things: Chapter Three: The Monster and the Superhero (2022)
Enjoying this season, but...
There is no way they would arrest El and transport her to a juvenile facility that fast, especially without a parent present. Nor would the cops question her like that without a parent present. And if they knew the story of El being bullied and it being videoed, it would never have gone down like that, especially in the 80s.
Eternals (2021)
Why?
I will start by saying that I am 100% behind Hollywood including more racial diversity. I am all for more strong female lead movies. I am in no way that hater of those things, that sadly I read so many comments about on here. That said, in the context of this story, I am not sure why they chose to go that route, especially when their origin is explained. Why would Asherem design such a racily diverse group, especially when he sends them to earth at a time when everyone would be mocha colored. Also, why make one deaf? Why make one a child? Why make one gay? Again, I am in no way against that if it fits the story. Here, it just feels forced and honestly, underutilized, as it doesn't really play a part in the plot. It's nice to see the diversity, but doing it just because it gives more fodder for the haters to latch onto.
The movie itself suffered slightly because of thi,, but overall I found it enjoyable.
Unknown (2011)
The Overbaord Fractured Frantic Hancock Number 23 Bourne Captain Marvel Recall
I'm not saying amnesia doesn't happen. It does. It just seems to happen a lot more in movies. So does remembering everything at a pivotal point in a movie.
I'm not saying Unknown was the worst amnesia movie, but it had its issues for sure. I'm kind of also not a big fan of a new character being introduced at the 11th hour to provide the "twist".
Also, the deliberate misleading, like his "wife" in the museum saying she loves him or whatever to make you think she's being held captive when she's really part of it? That made no sense.
And when the "twist" finally did arrive, they didn't sell it well enough. I had a feeling it was going to be something to that effect so maybe that's why I was like, meh, but it had such a Total Recall vibe at that moment, I kind of rolled my eyes.
Ok, and then he remembered planting the bomb and now wants to stop it? OK, whatever. But then in the final fight, his REAL persona comes back to him but yet he's still like, "Nah, I'm a good guy now". I'm not sure that's really how it works.
I feel it would have been more realistic if he kills the other "him" then killed the girl and then went back to being an assassin. Way better ending, fitting more in line with what have REALLY happened.
But like being at a massage parlor, people expect that happy ending.
What If...?: What If... Thor Were an Only Child? (2021)
Peoples' Hiney Hairs are Twisted Too Tight
This was a totally fun episode. After Ragnarock is it any surprise they took this in a comedic direction? What's wrong with a little humorous filler? Was it gut busting? No. Did it poke fun with a lot on in jokes? Yeah, and that was great. People need to unclench and learn how to enjoy something for what it is...fun. Remember fun? In the before time, in the long long ago? Mostly before the internet gave everyone the power to have an opinion (yes, my stupid self included). It's just amazing to find out how salty most people really are. Sad.
