Ralph Breaks the Internet (2018)
Disney version of Emoji Movie (?)
Six years after the first movie, the sequel of Wreck-It-Ralph is breaking in. Is it coindence that Disney released this movie the same year as Sony's Hotel Transylvania franchise? Guess not. I see what you did there, Disney. This sequel takes place six yeas after the first movie. It is the same amount of time that's passed in real time life. We can see that from the sign outside the arcade.
Assumed by the trailer back then, this movie seems like a cooler version of Emoji Movie which was failed badly in rating and revenue. The fact is, Wreck-It-Ralph 2 is suprisingly better than the Emoji Movie. Either from its plot or easter eggs. We will see about the revenue later. But, considering it is a Disney movie, well you guess it.
Before talking about the plot, let's check the newcomer casts. Gal Gadot is perfect as Shank. The character is based on her character in Fast Furious franchise, after all. They said that the movie is Gal Gadot's first animated film. And one thing I didn't expected that SHE CAN SING. Next, Taraji as Yesss also great. The character resembes her much. And Alfred Monila as Double Dan. You recognized him as Doc Ock in the original Spiderman. Moreover, there's also Vin Diesel and the original VA of Disney princesses, except for Aurora. Nostalgia at its best!
The movie has a complete plot structure. Six stages with five turning points. In general term, its plot is easy to understand. Duh, it is a PG-13 movie. The climax is executed beautifully yet predicted. No wonder if there's someone out there would choose Vanellope as their favorite Disney princesses after this movie.
As expected, the movie is full of pop culture stuffs. You can measure your pop culture knowledge by searching the easter eggs. A113, princesses' casual clothes, Zootopia, Twisted Metal, and so many to mention. There are two EGs that become my favorite. The imperial march song and the usage of Internet/Wifi word. Even they said that this movie is the first movie that uses 'Internet' in its title, it still can't use 'Internet' and 'Wifi' word inside the movie. Maybe because of intellectual property thing. Instead, they changed those words into Interneat and W1F1.
In a whole, Wreck-It-Ralph 2 is a movie that challenge "problematic" Disney princess stereotypes. Even the movie looks like an advert for Disney's brands like Ohmydisney and others, Ralph 2 is changing our perception about Disney princesses. Also, congratulations for Vanellope von Schweetz become the first Jewish Disney princess.
Ciao.
Venom (2018)
Venom is an unexpected good anti-hero movie
I had brought small expectation to watch this movie because Sony did not use an origin story. Did Venom story work without his first known host a.k,a Spider-Man? The answer is yes.
Tom Hardy nailed his role as Eddie Brock except he is not a blonde like in the comic. Also, Tom is voicing Venom in the movie. So, he is playing two roles simultaneously. The funny thing is when Venom speaking, I feel like I'm listening Bane (Dark Knight Trilogy) with a vibrant effect. Nonetheless, it is awesome. No doubt that Tom Hardy is great at his job
Speaking of the plot, first act is a little bit slow. But in the rest of the act, they keep up the pace. Rushed? Not too much. Even they didn't give Riot more time for background telling, they had great job in Venom's background. Furthermore, I found a single plot hole in the last act. Well, it's a plot hole for casual viewer. But if you are a die-hard Venom fans or geeky enough, it's not a plot hole.
Another thing to add about the good thing about this movie is its effect. The blue fire used in the movie was beautiful. Not forget to mention, the last fighting scene. Also, the movie works like Wolverine with its PG-13. But, I know it should have better with R-rated. Yes, Logan is the proof.
Will this movie has sequel? Even thought I want Venom join the MCU, but i'm pretty sure the movie will have sequel. Its IW revenue should be enourmous considering the fact that Tencent is a part of the production team. Yup, that Tencent.
As a casual comicbook reader, it is nice to see Life Foundation and Five Symbiotes (Scream, Riot, Toxin, Venom, and Carnage) come to the big screen. Also, the chemistry between Eddie and Venom is something that make this movie worth to watch.
There are two credit scenes. Mid and post-end credits. Both credits teasing new movie project of Sony. But, I'm going to talk about the mid credit only because it teases Venom's sequel. As rumored, Woody Harrelson plays as Carnage. In the credit, we know for sure that Carnage is going to be the villain in the sequel. From his little appearance, I'm grateful that Woody is nailed as Cletus Kasady. I hope the sequel will not be cancelled so we can see how good Woody as Carnage.
Ciao
Truth or Dare (2018)
It's below average teenagers horror movie.
The only reason why I want to watch this movie is because of its PH, Blumhouse Production. The PH has great record in making horror movies such as Paranormal Activity, The Purge, and the masterpiece, Get Out *claps*.
The movie's premise is quite simple. A simple game goes wrong. Even though it is similar to Stay Alive's premise, it turns out that the plot is great. But, there's one fatal problem. The plot delivery is pretty awful.
When I know that the movie is R rated, I was expected the gore will be similar to Final Destination or (maybe) Saw. Unfortunately, it isn't. It is R rated because of its sexual scenes. I mean, come on. I understand that the movie has teenagers theme but you don't have to include the romantic things into the plot. It's freaking cringy. Especially when you watch it alone *insert sad emoji*
There are so many scene that almost made me burst out laughing. The special effect and the death,. The effect is like a Snapchat filter and it's cringy af. The death isn't memorable. I didn't even turn my face from the screen because the death is lame. Absolutely lame.
TL:DR, if you want a romantic/horror/thriller movie or want to kill your time, this movie is for you. But, if you want the suspension of thriller/horror movie, it isn't for you. 4 of 10.
Avengers: Infinity War (2018)
Beyond my expectation!
After building a plot for ten years, today we are at its peak. It's the culmination for those credit scenes that we waited in every MCU movie.
I did bring my expectation for this movie. I always wondered how the Russo brother handled a movie with vast list of main characters. The result? They nailed it. Either Avengers and Guardians have their part perfectly. It's about balance, right?
The opening part was predicted considering the end of Ragnarok last year. The rests are shown from the trailer but not in order and with several additional exciting scenes. Also, as we predicted, we found 'Thor-eyepatch' scene. It's a scene when there is a specific scene in a trailer but then changed in the final product.
Personally, I'm glad that Black Order is involved in the movie. Four of them didn't get any background story which is fine considering the runtime. However, they didn't have a proper death. Well, they had their purpose collecting stones for Thanos. But, only if they had a proper death, maybe they are rememberable.
If you are expecting a totally dark theme movie, you will be disappointed. It has several funny jokes which bring smile on our face and I'm definitely fine with it. It's a way of life. If you have a sad event, a little smile would nice, right? It is reflected in Thor's scene with Rocket. He is making joke but deep down, you know that he is afraid and has unbearable sadness.
As expected, there are deaths literally everywhere. It's chaotic. It shows that Thanos is someone that you should afraid of. For me, it's pretty dark movie. Not only because of the deaths, but also how the movie can scramble your emotion. Even though so many deaths, we were reunited with a certain character in Phase I of MCU. (Sure, it freaks me out)
Conclusion. I'm still trembling when I write this. So exticed and sad when I come out from the theater. The part that I love the most is when Thanos snap his finger. I'm glad that it is happened like in the comic. But, I'm freaking sad when a lot of main characters died, especially Spidey. Literally, I'm crying in the theater.
Well, it's beyond expectation. 10 of 10. And there's only one credit scene. Just wait. It's worth. A lot.
Rampage (2018)
Not what I expected :(
The only reason I watched this movie is I want to know how someone can put a solid plot for a movie based on a game that has basic premise about destroying cities and stuffs.
As much as I grateful to see Ralph who is my favorite monster in the game, I can't denied that this movie is disappointing. The plot is basically a "template" plot for monster movies. Experiment goes wrong and destruction everywhere.
There's another issues in the movie. The character. Why did they introduce a character if he/she didn't crucial to the plot? There is a scene that introduce a character and I was like "wow, a promising character" but then I was like "okay". The funny thing, there's a character who didn't even get a proper introduction. Also, the background story of the characters is messy.
I did enjoy the movie only for the destruction scenes or may be I did enjoy that because they remind me the game I have played when I was kid. The rest is not so good. No further explanation about that.
A Quiet Place (2018)
A decent horror thriller movie.
Judging from the casts, this movie looks like a low budget movie with additional CGI stuff. Sometimes, a low budget movie has a great plot or even a twist. However, A Quiet Place isn't that kind of movie.
The plot is really simple. Because of its simplicity, the movie didn't have time for story telling. Imagine like this. You're having a supper in a fancy restaurant and the waiter directly gives you the main course without an appetizer. After you're done with your main course and ready for desert, the waiter appeared to tell you to pay the bill and leave the restaurant. Yup, that's the plot.
Despite of the plot, the tension of the movie is well executed. It feels like you can understand what the protagonists feel in certain situation, especially in the climax. I wouldn't recommend a woman who easily get traumatized or whose PPD to watch this movie. The psychology element of being a woman is emphasized in the movie.
A Quiet Place isn't a spoon-feeding movie. It needs certain aspect to understand the core. Well, it also because it's a slow-paced movie. Nevertheless, Emily Blunt and her husband (who also the director) showed us great chemistry without saying a lot of words. Also, the movie serves you a new sensation of watching movie in theater. It is really quiet in the theater.
Ready Player One (2018)
An easy-pill-to-swallow movie that gives eyegasm and nerdgasm
What we have here is a dystopian future + advanced game technology movie which is adapted from the novel with the same name.
The plot is definitely simple. Try to win a game by find easter eggs in every quest. The characters might not developed much, but the avatars (characters in VR) was developed enough. And yes, Art3mis is bae <3
As a person who lives by playing game since kid, Ready Player One gives me nerdgasm. A lot of easter eggs can be found. Many game characters, many movie references, and many pop culture references. I was freaking out in the theater when those eggs showed up. The last battle was definitely the best, especially when the freaking Gundam appeared! (It's not a spoiler since it showed up in the trailer).
It is a easy-pill-to-swallow movie and gives pleasure to your eyes. My personal advice is watch it in IMAX. 9.5 of 10.
P.S : No need to wait post end credit. There is still no the sequel of the novel so don't bother to hope there's a sequel for this movie. Ciao!
Black Panther (2018)
A beautiful themed superhero of Marvel
Black Panther is back after Civil War! Before, I was assured myself that this movie would be the best superhero movie in 2018 if Infinity War wouldn't released in the same year. Now, the outcome is great.
Firstly, I do like the opening scene. It can be said that it's different from other MCU's films. New formula for the next phase, I think. Secondly, please someone give the person whose responsible for the choreography in this movie a lot of cookie. Black Panther isn't a martial art themed superhero but it nailed it. So much better than the choreography in the series of protector of K'un-Lun. Third, the humor. Back in the Ragnarok last year, Marvel served us an action-humor movie. Thus, my expectation is Black Panther will be not so different from Ragnarok. I can't said that this movie will not have any humour. It has precise portion of humour and I totally laughing out loud from its jokes. Last, the cast. Hands down for all the cast. Totally great job, especially you Andy Serkins.
Closing statement. Black Panther is a beautiful superhero movie. The plot, the bgm, and of course the scenery. 9 of 10.
P.S : There are two post-end credit scenes. Just wait. It's worth your time in the second scenes. Ciao.
Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi (2017)
Better than The Force Awakens!
To be honest, I only watch the trailer once because I'm afraid to put so much expectation and it fails me like TFA. But hey, it's beyond EPIC!
The movie has an emotional and breathtaking plot. It's like I'm riding a roller coaster and the suspense is so damn real. It's unfortunate that I can't explain the plot details because of its epicness and of course, it will ruin your movie experience.
The stars? Oh my God. The charisma between Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher is gold. They succeed to hypnotize me for bringing the good old memories. Don't forget to mention Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, The Collector of MCU, and the woman in Jurassic Park. But, among them, Adam Driver has a great character development as Kylo. Totally better than the previous one.
The lightsaber choreography, the fighter battle, and CAPTAIN PHASMA totally freaked me out in the movie. Oh God, the movie is good in so many levels. The movie is near perfect. Is it right if I say this movie can replace ESB as the best sequel in SW franchise? Maybe yes. 10/10
Murder on the Orient Express (2017)
"Everyone is a suspect".
Here it is, our second adaptation of Murder in the Orient Express. I'm totally excited when the first time saw the trailer. It makes me wonder how the movie will be different from the original source.
The result? I'm satisfied. A lot of big stars which make people misguided the murderer ( If you haven't read the novel, be my guest to guess the murderer during the movie). Another thing that makes me satisfied is its plot. The exposition is not cheesy, the complication is well delivered, the climax is added for additional suspense (perhaps) , and the resolution is gold!
I'm out of my words to write about the movie. As one of my acquaintance said, it's like playing a werewolf game. It's a recommended movie to people who like to challenge their deduction skills or maybe to people who trust their hunch.
Even though I did find several flaws in the movie, I think it's because I have read the novel. It's hard to not judge a movie based on novel without comparing with the novel itself (maybe Harry Potter fans would know it lol). I truly hope there is a continuation of the movie or maybe we can have Miss Marple instead of Poirot!
I will have my closing words like as shown in the trailer. "Everyone is a suspect". Enjoy the movie for what it is. Do not compare it with the novel or the classic one. 9 of 10.
Justice League (2017)
Nice-packed action movie! Entertaining!
One year and 7 months since BvS, the Trinity is back with additional members. A half-man half-robot guy, a man who can talk to fish, and a man who can only push something when he is running.
First, let's talk about each member character's development except the Trinity. First is Aquaman. Because of his role is somehow important in this movie, he's got a lot of background story. Can't explain more because there is a spoiler on it. Next is Cyborg. He has similar portion with the man who uses fork to fight. However, he has a significant role for the movie. Last is Barry Allen. The movie brings premise to Flash movie in the next year. Overall, it is great.
Move to the plot. Personally, I do find it fast-paced :( Maybe it is true that Zack Snyder is lack on delivering the story. Up until now, it bothers me why Warner Bros used this kind of plot to bring the league. Nevertheless, I was delightful to see the action scenes. The first last battle makes me shivers.
Conclusion's time! Justice League is a nice-packed of several action scenes movie. I would say that this movie is a jumping stone for their next crossover because of its lack essence of the story. For fanboys, there are lot of hints that you can find in the movie. It pleases your thirst, I mean hunger, for comic book references. The score is 8 of 10. (If it is seen by the action, I would definitely give it 9)'
P.S : There are two post end credit scenes. To be honest, the last credit scene almost make me lost my mind on DC Cinematic Universe. Totally love it.
Thor: Ragnarok (2017)
Exciting light-humored movie
Here it is, our God of Thunder is back after AoU.
As many reviews said that this movie is light-humored movie, I can confirm that's true. However, for me, it didn't reduce much essence of the theme. It's well delivered. Other than this, I do very like the visualization and cinematographic, especially on bifrost fight. It beats GoTG for sure.
Okay, the characters. FFS, Hela is OP. Thor didn't have any chance against her. She is unstoppable and cannot f-word die. She is goddess of death, after all. Maybe I can put her in the third position of strongest villain on MCU below big-purple man and Surtur. I didn't list Dormammu because we have not see his true strength.
So, conclusion. Nearly cry tears for joy by seeing the original power of Thor, Valkyrie is awesome, Loki is still God of Mischief, Heimdall didn't have Soul Stone neither nor Hela, there is a character who totally change in Infinity War later, and we get a tiny glimpse on how Thor get stranded in Star Lord's ship in first post end credit scene.
It's a 8.0 of 10
Cinderella (2015)
Charming
I am not a fans of Disney princesses or Disney characters. But i think every child in the world know Cinderella. Being tormented by her step- mother and her shoes is a trademark for Cinderella.
Honestly, this movie brings back my memories about Cinderella. Honestly, in my country, i didn't ever saw original movie of Cinderella. I only know her by a fairytale in my elementary school book.
Even though i'm not an expert at cinematographic, the background, music, CGI, and cast are perfect to me. For an usual fans like me, this movie is worth to watch if you want to see your nostalgic moment become more modern.
