The Idea of You (2024)
These performances are TOO GOOD for a rom com. Actually loved this..!
These are way too good performances for a rom-com! Infact, this isn't a rom-com. It's definitely out of romcom's leaugue.
Anne Hathaway we already knew about, but Nicholas Galitzine is actually phenomenal here. And the chemistry between the two is just, wow. Going in, i definitely didn't think I was about to see some of the best first kisses ever filmed, or such an intense sexual tension poking holes through the screen, but also with such dignity?? Such honesty? Feeling so real? No way I was expecting that.
But mostly I wasn't expecting to be moved like I was. To be touched by the fictional feelings of fictional characters, cause it was all so real to me, so genuine, so true. And also, I didn't expect to be provoked, to be challenged to think.
I was actually caught off guard. I really liked this film. I give it 8 stars even if it's not a masterpiece. I just want to reward it for offering me a great time, a new prospective and some more. And for making me review a movie - this is probably only the second or third time I bother.
Interstellar (2014)
Absolute PERFECTION. I wish I could watch it for the first time again.
I wish I could listen to my favorite song for the first time again. I wish I could do that. And this is the film. This is it. The one film I wish I could watch for the first time again...
So much more than sci-fi. So much more! Thank you to the creators, thank you for this experience. I am humbled by your talent. Just wow.
Emma. (2020)
If her goal was to be unlikable and annoying, she nailed it
One thing is to give the audience a flawed character, another is to give them someone that annoying and detestable. If her goal was to be unappealing and unlikable in every single role, she nailed it. But I don't think that was the point. I didn't enjoy the film and the lead actress is mostly to blame. It wasn't just that Emma comes of as over-the-top snobby and spoiled, it's the mannerisms, the overacting, and what about all that blinking and rolling and batting her eyelashes in disgust?? Is the "dead rolling eye" back in style? It was like 90's mean girl all over again - but in costume. Silly, spoiled, overconfident, arrogant and just annoying. Not a good look then, and certainly not a good look now. But mostly, it's not what Emma is supposed to be. Emma is supposed to be naive, privileged and out of touch, but compassionate and actually relatable because she redeems herself truthfully, which is kind of the point of the book. But I'm not comparing to the book here, or the other film versions (it would be too cruel), I wanna stick to this movie alone. So, also, there is so much narrative discontinuity - for example, she treats Harriet like "nah" and then all of the sudden she cries "she's my best friend"... Not credible one bit.
I give it 3 stars because it's not a 1 star movie - so much work was poured in for me to be that unkind. At least 3 stars are earned for the costumes, the scenography and the rest of the actors - Johnny Flynn saves quite a bit of the film and is very believable unlike his partner Anya Taylor-Joy. He is so credible that you almost believe that anyone would fall for that brat Emma as portrayed here.
I'm sorry if my comment is hurtful to some of the components of this movie, but this is what reviews are for. And, to be totally honest, I'm being kind with mine.
Graffiti (2015)
Moved me deeply
This is my first review ever, but I just had to say this is what film making should look like. This is what it is supposed to be and what was intended for. I just have to compliment this hoping that it will encourage other projects like this.
I have to admit that I watched this by accident when my infant daughter was playing with the remote and stopped at the beginning of this film. She must have been enchanted by the music score which is absolutely beautiful. I stopped what I was doing, feeling drawn to it, just like she did. I was hung to my chair and watched filled with hope and compassion for the protagonist, made me also think about all the harm that we are doing to our planet and that this scenario could be real some day, what a dreadful thought that was.. But mostly it moved me. Touched me deeply.
The scenery and music are stunning. The acting is powerful, it really is considering that the actor had almost no lines whatsoever, no interactions at all, and with his deep eyes and that sweet little dog managed to speak volumes on humanity's nature. My compliments to all those who made this happen. Thank you.
