The Weekly with Charlie Pickering (2015)
Mediocre
Much of this show is very mediocre. Pedestrian and obvious. Guests help to lift it at times, guests like Rhys Nicholson, Judith Lucy, Margaret Pomeranz help and almost make it worth watching. Charlie has lost his edge, that is if ever had one. I usually watch in the hope that Rhys Nicholson will be on. Tom Gleeson was funnier than Charlie but he's gone. The ' you're cancelled' slot is silly and worn out. I think Charlie Pickering has done his dash and ought to call it a day. Utopia is real satire. For this show to call itself satire is stretching the definition to its limits. I'm over it. Zzzzz.
The Diplomat (2023)
Glossy Soap
West Wing made simple. Unconvincing plot. Unconvincing characters. The partnerships are unrealistic, no chemistry. The characters are two dimensional. I thought I was watching West Wing for idiots. All too glossy and polished in the wrong way. Rufus Sewell character too nice and always in the way. I watched it on a recommendation and spent the whole series waiting for it to get interesting. It reminded me of those 60s things like the Saint or the Champions. I wouldn't have bothered if I had known it would make West Wing look credible. If you have something else to watch I'd pick that first. American schmaltz.
Thirteen (2016)
Gripping but contrived
Main character, by Jody Comer was acting as well as plot allowed but the plot was dreadfully contrived and mostly was not credible. The final episode was ludicrous with so much that couldn't have happened. It was more comic book than skilled narrative. The combination of happy endings in the relationships was disappointing. They'd have worked better if they'd failed.
What we have here are good actors with a poorly crafted plot. Police were two dimensional, indeed most of the characters lacked depth.
Having said this, suspense was enough to keep me watching. I just wish that the denouement had been more considered.
What If It Works? (2017)
Beautiful love.
Zany, sweet. A lovely presentation of love in the context of mental disorder. Quirky Australian romcom. Recommended to all fans of He Died With A Felafel, Muriel and such.
Press (2018)
Bingeworthy
Couldn't stop watching. Some contrivance but still gripping. I binged it all in two days. Acting good from leads, especially Charlotte Riley. Good soap.
The Trial of Christine Keeler (2019)
My puberty
All of this took place just as I was starting secondary school. I was very confused and bewildered by the hypocrisy, and the intensity of the media coverage. It shattered my cosy childish beliefs. Watching this made me sad and angry and bewildered again by the hypocrisy. I think it was a well acted and accurately portrayed linear narrative.
The Virtues (2019)
Reality
The acting was so real I couldn't avert my eyes. Brilliant acting, brilliant plot.
Traces (2019)
Not credible
Pedestrian and contrived. The first episode seemed to have lots of assumptions not based in logic.
White Riot (2019)
Evocative of a time of critical change.
This movie took me right back to the time. The killing of Blair Peach by the police SPG, ERIC Clapton's unforgivable racism and the inspiration and hope of Rock against Racism were presented brilliantly. And the wonderful CLASH!
Doc Martin (2004)
Cloying
It is sickeningly cloying and sentimental in that eccentric British way but I can't stop watching it.
Shakespeare & Hathaway: Private Investigators (2018)
Silly English dramady
All the American English stereotypes. Overdone accents. Silly plots. Caricatures. Unbelievable.
Harrow (2018)
Pretty awful
The acting is stilted. The characters are shallow and not credible. Ioan Gruffudd is awkward and not at ease acting with Australians. Not very convincing.
