300: Rise of an Empire (2014)
Meh...
I had considerably muted my expectations when I went out to see this movie last night. I mean, no bad ass Spartans and Leonidas right? So this bloke who plays Themistokles (Sullivan) has about as much charisma as a 90 year old geriatric butler on the outback. That sort of spoiled the movie for me.
The continuity aspect was well taken care off. Again, I would not dwell on inconsistencies in historical narrative since this is based off a graphic novel.
Eva Green was good in her role. There was very little of Xerxes, which was another sore point. The good bit was amazing 3D effects. Went very well. I liked the whole setting.
Once Upon a Time in Mumbai Dobaara! (2013)
Much ado about nothing...
I had some hope with the Sequel of a highly engaging Once Upon a time in Mumbai where Devgan Sahab played the role of Haji Mastan flawlessly. This movie follows with the travails of SHoaib (Played by Emraan Hashmi in the first movie). Shoaib is now played by Akshay Kumar, who spares no effort to ham his way through. This was more cringe worthy than Tees Maar Khan, which at least was mildly funny.
Casting errors, who was the casting director? Love interest Sonakshi Sinha? You did not find ANYONE else? Also, Imran Khan? Does he look like a gangster from ANY angle?
Not to mention that since Shoaib is modelled on Dawood bhai, he seems very vague, moody and very unlike the alpha male he is in real life or even in the original movie.
If you watch this movie you would believe gangsters have no better work than romancing girls and going into fights themselves like some sadak chaap taporis. No plot line whatsoever, this movie was highly disappointing.
Tees Maar Khan (2010)
Mercilessly being written off! Not so bad...
The genre of movies to which TMK belongs to is generally Spoof or typical Bollywood Masala movies. Reminds you of the yesteryear's Govinda fare. Leave your brains behind for this one! One thing is for sure, it was crisply edited. The movie did not bore me. I do love my share of refined movies like Guzaarish, Johny Gaddar, My Name is Khan to name a few, but this movie has its own space! Farah Khan entertains us and how! I loved Akshay's rendition of Tabrez Mirza Khan aka Tees Maar Khan's character. In fact, even Kat was lovable in her dumb belle avatar. Sheela Ki Jawani impressed and so did the song with Sallu in it. You could see the chemistry between Sallu n Kat in the song. I even liked Akshay Khanna in it! And I am not a big fan of either Akshay Khanna and Kumar, but still, loved the movie. All in all, the story seems predictable, the plot line thin, but the characters will entertain. Typical popcorn timepass movie.
Dabangg (2010)
Chulbul "Raabin hudd" Paandey all the way!
If you love and yearn for the bollywood masala of the yesteryears, then look no further than Dabangg. I do not remember the last time I went to a movie theater and actually whistled at a hero's entry/dialogues/dance. For Sallu Bhai I did all three. Make no mistake, its a very thin plot, almost non existent, its made with a purpose, and that is to provide Salman Khan the canvas to prove his screen presence. And he has made the most of it!
Set in the backdrop of rural UP, Sallu Bhai for the first time acts in a bhojpuri avatar as Chulbul Pandey, a corrupt but good at heart police wallah. You got the typical filmi elements...larger than life villain in the form of politician Sonu Sood as Cheddi Singh, evil step father (Vinod Khanna, wasted in this role is what I feel, he is too classy for this stuff), bumbling step bro Arbaaz Khan. There is even the typical item song to round it off! Incidentally, thats the highlight of the movie! Watch this movie for Sallu unleashed, playing himself...dancing to unchoreographed steps. The mischievous brat we adore!
Kanthaswamy (2009)
Very different tamil movie
Awesome finishing, original plot line and stellar acting makes this a treat to watch. A longish movie, 3hrs plus in length but you never leave your seat to miss out on any sequence.
The plot is not very original, Robin Hood, man robs from rich and give it to the poor kind of a story line, but the take is very different. The lead role by Vikram is played out well though his literal take on Kandasami in a rooster avatar is a bit over the top. Shreya Saran finally has a role more meatier than just being eye candy. Other actors like Tiwari also have supported well.
The virgin locales were a breath of fresh air (Mexico) and the action sequences were quite different. All in all, a entertaining movie!
Ayan (2009)
Slick...Tamil Cinema re invents itself!
After a long time, it was nice to see Tamil cinema for what its known for, slick production values. Ayan brings out that very well thanks to the tight story which does not bore you, slick action sequences (especially the Congo chase scene) and good acting. Surya is in his element as a young smuggler. Akashdeep Saigal seems a bit over the top as a stereo typical villain but seems to hold his own. Other actors support the story well. What is nice about this movie is no unnecessary masala and sub plots to mar the overall tight storyline. Kudos!
Watch the movie for some refreshing acting by Surya and company. Watch it for virgin locales hitherto unexplored in contemporary domestic cinema i.e. Congo. Watch it for the tight storyline minus the regular masala.
Deedar-E-Yaar (1982)
A whiff of fresh air in these times...
I caught this movie on TV today out of sheer boredom, I decided to watch it. I must say, a very restrained performance from jumping jack jeetu, and chintu excels in his Urdu dialog delivery. The movie is authentic and dialogs classic. The story might seem cheesy for a few (a love triangle) but the movie should be seen not for the story but for the period, acting and language. Rekha supports well with her tawayuff character. Watch the movie if you are a nostalgic film buff of the late seventies and early eighties. This movie seems to be one of the chosen few...nay...the only one to be made on the grand Urdu culture of Lucknow and Muslim Northern India of the past, replete with its full glory and perhaps, debauchery and filthy wealth of its Nawabs.
Nawabi andaaz all the way!
Om Shanti Om (2007)
Paisa Wasool!
This movie comes as a welcome relief from the dark dark Saawariya which I watched just the day before. First half set in the seventies is awesome and the second half is good, though they would have done well to make it shorter.
The story as we all know is of Om (SRK) , a junior artiste, set in the seventies who loves a famous movie star Shanti, played by Deepika. Arjun Rampal plays the villain producer (Mehra) and Sreyas Talpade looks good as SRK's sidekick Pappu.
SPOILER AHEAD!!!!! Om likes Shanti but Shanti is already secretly married to the producer Mehra, who kills her on finding out that she is pregnant (Because he wants to marry a rich producer's daughter)on the sets of Om Shanti Om, the grand movie he was planning to make. Om also dies trying to save Shanti.
INTERVAL Second half, cool dude SRK re incarnated as a yesteryear actor's son Om (again?). Lot of lavish songs and sequences later, Om jogs his memory when he re visits that burnt set while finalizing a locale for his movie. Enter a much older Mehra, SRK gets his memory back, goes back to Pappu and his Maa, plots to get Mehra to confess for his sin. Coincidence...coincidence...a Shanti lookalike comes to the auditions and boom...they train her hard for entrapping Mehra. Om and Mehra decide to remake Om Shanti Om and Om chooses the same locale for his premiere etc.
The finale is awesome...Mehra (Rampal) finds out that these guys are trying to con him into admitting his crime...how? Coz he watched the supposed "Shanti Ghost" bleed while running away from him....Ghosts do not bleed rite? Our Mr Mehra is kinda smart that ways...hehe....anyways...so here is the deal...in the climax scene Mr Mehra calls Om's bluff saying he can not prove that Mehra killed Shanti coz no one will believe his story and says even the Shanti lookalike wont get him to confess....enter Shanti...SRK n Rampal both tell her that call it off...he knows ur a fake n so on...but Shanti goes on...describes how Mehra killed her....by burying her alive! Everyone is shocked...how does she know? A brief fight scene later, Shanti kills Mehra through the Jhoomar falling down...enter from left...Pappu, Maa and ...hold your breath...the Shanti lookalike...so this Shanti was....yes you got it right! Shanti's Ghost! Don't get me wrong...the story sounds so so clichéd but when you watch the movie...you will be thoroughly entertained. Awesome over the top seventies style acting in the first half will entertain you till the interval and you will be star gazing for the next few scenes watching 30 stars performing in one song, which is amazing! Kiron Kher as the filmi maa, Javed Sheikh as SRK's "new" dad, Sreyas Talpade all perform exceedingly well. Deepika is a revelation and need we say anything about SRK? Watch the movie for entertaining yourself and having a blast without paying heed to logic.
Saawariya (2007)
A waste of time and Money
What was Sanjay Leela Bhansali thinking of when he made this movie? Ranbir has like 2 expressions in the whole movie...Sonam has one...she can not even laugh properly! Salman has been used in like 1 and a half scenes, Rani and Zohra have been wasted.
Let me not even start on the sets...what is it? A Venice like canal with floating lamps....flowers....life size Buddha statues?
The era? Your guess is as good as mine...post independence...pre independence...60's...whatever. Why is it always dark in the movie? Its like night 24/7 and rains perennially except that one time when it snows!
SPOILER AHEAD!!!
SPOILER AHEAD!!!
SPOILER AHEAD!!!
The movie is basically about Ranbir (Ranbir Raj in the movie), who stays in a God forsaken town as a paying guest with Zohra Sehgal (British or Anglo Indian? She is called Lynn and Lillie pops...Gawd!)...he falls in love with a Muslim girl Sakina, played by Sonam, who wears weird clothes all through the movie...who in turn is in love with a truant tenant Aalim played by Salman Khan (wasted in this movie) and awaits his return. The movie is all about emotions and how Sakina dilly dallies and half flirts with Ranbir only to go back to Aalim in the end... The movie sucks from the start with incessant songs...over the top hamming...claustrophobic settings and so on. And what is with Sonam going off with Salman in the end? It was so abrupt...she can not make up her mind...she flirts with Ranbir for most of the movie and then narrates how she fell in love with Sallu Bhai when he was her tenant and then left for some weird mission and she awaits his return...Ranbir does show some shades of Grey when he burns that letter intended for Salman and tries to convince Sonam to give up on Sallu...anyways, barring a few dance steps of Ranbir Kapoor, which reminds us of Shammi Kapoor...Shashi Kapoor and even good ol Raj Kapoor...the film is a sheer waste of money and time!
Satya (1998)
Great movie...but unrealistic in one aspect...
Great movie, absolutely flawless, gritty and tight storyline and I loved Bhiku Mhatre (What happened of him? He is nowhere to be seen nowadays). The realism came in as a welcome relief in the backdrop of candy floss movies doing the rounds those days...but pray tell me, why wasn't a single Muslim gangster used in the main gang? Coz the underworld has more than a fair representation of the minority community...RGV seems to have a bias in movies against you know who....and this is just one example... Having said that, this movie scores yet again in terms of character details, using the "actual" Mumbai settings, which set a trend for other film makers to follow.
