Killers of the Flower Moon (2023)
One Hour Too Long. Add some humor.
Quantity does not equal quality. Great story well told, could have used more action if it was going 3.5 hours. Acting good especially DiCaprio & Gladstone. De Niro was good, playing himself, grumpy old man. Plemons great as usual, I called that back in Breaking Bad. Please Brendan Frazier, lose 100 lbs. The plot was easy to follow, did not need a lot of build up, so the movie was boring and dragged in the middld, I snoozed a few minutes in the theatre. I'd rank it behind other Scorsese greats, Departed, Goodfellows, Wolf. I do believe if Scorsese employed more humor in his movies, he would have earned many more Oscars, many more. Humor breaks the drama without ruining the plot. I laughed only once when DeNiro was paddling DiCaprio. Not believable, who would let another man spank him, but I could see DeNiro really getting his kicks out of whalloping his protege.
Acapulco (2021)
So-So. Go with RedOaks instead.
Saw the first 2 episodes, couldn't go on. Ok, but not great. Pretty good acting, weak writing. Many chances for real humor missed. Lots of clichés. Essentially a knock-off of RedOaks which is far better. The premise is good, but the execution is lacking. Also, the venue is problematic because it is limited in it's scenarios. Plus the best actor, the Uncle, plays a limited role. Not believable...who expects the pool attendant to supply pot for free? I suggest bringing the plots up to a more 'mature' rating, more uncomfortable romantic situations, more action scenes, less repetitive clichés. IMHO.
1883 (2021)
Slow!
Like Yellowstone, takes forever to develop the plot. Lots of needless dialog and side bars. Could have done the entire series in 6 episodes without losing any continuity. McGraw and his wife both very stiff, downers. Didn't crack a smile the whole series. That's why you should use professionals. Elliot was good but a bit too typecast, just followed the grumpy old trail boss script, no spontaneity. The daughter was the best, she was fluid and didn't look like she was forcing it. Plus, as the Duke would say, she is a 'sight for sore eyes'. I enjoyed watching, but next season, if there is one, cut to the chase. Pandemic's over, people want to have fun, not become depressed.
Reacher (2022)
Stick With Tom Cruise
Wow! What a stinker. The main male lead is so stiff, looks like he's perpetually squelching a big fart. Everything so predictable, the story line, the plot, the lines. Whoever rated this train wreck an 8 needs is not being truthful.
The Wire (2002)
Why The Hype?
Not sure why the high rankings. Not as good as The Shield, or others for that matter. Main character very good, all casting is +++...but it moves so slowly. Only half way through Season 1... if it improves, I'll amend.
The Revenant (2015)
Great Movie Must See!
Excellent all way around. Sound, video, acting, action...just great!.
Just one problem, knock off of 1971 Man In The Wilderness, Richard Harris.
At least give credit to the original writer, who's script produced an Academy Award nomination.
Jeesh!
A Hidden Life (2019)
Too long, too boring.
Excellent presentation in terms of score and cinematography, hindered by a simple and controversial plot presented with boring overkill. While you want to feel compassion for the main character, it is hard to justify him deserting his wife and family to make a point. Either support your Country and your family by joining the military, or leave the Country with your family.
Big Sky (2020)
Superficial, predictable.
1st episode, just OK. Downhill from there. Acting is very bad, actors talk in monotone, no emotion. Plot predictable, boring. Hire a few new writers if you want to salvage this abomination.
Anatomy of a Murder (1959)
Great movie with a terrible ending.
Great movie, plot acting, etc. until the ending. The suspense buildup provided for a huge letdown with a milquetoast ending. The conclusion could have been the same with a much more suspenseful ending.
Let Him Go (2020)
Predictable. Not believable. Soppy. Rambling.
Simple plot with too many side stories. Who's the Indian boy? Just shows up, for what purpose? The Costner character was a lawman, why didn't he use the law to get the kid back? No husband would let his wife run amok. They go to his hotel room, cut off 3 fingers, self defense? Could have been good, actually funny in some parts. Next time stick to the script.
Da 5 Bloods (2020)
Inconsistencies!
Looks like Spike got lazy and called this one in. Daughter conceived 50 years ago looks like a 25 year old, the mother looks 40, not 65. Gold got washed away in a mudslide but went uphill? Plot mimics Treasure of Sierra Madre, gold drives men to insanity due to selfishness. Hard to follow the flashbacks because the younger men looked like the older men. Would have been a 10 if final editing was not a rush job.
