New York Doll (2005)
A Great Documentary
First, I confess that I never "got" The New York Dolls.
Second, this is one of the best documentaries I have ever seen.
The film is a bittersweet, understated but fascinating portrayal of Arthur Kane, the one-time degenerate New York Doll bass player turned Mormon, as he prepares for a reunion concert with his former band mates, and, as it turns out, a far more important gig. The filmmaker treats all of the subjects(including Morrissey, David Johanssen, numerous LDS members, the LDS Church itself, and most of all, Kane) with dignity and respect, and without judgment. The film's unstated message of tolerance and understanding makes this worth watching by all.
Chuck & Buck (2000)
Very sad, not at all funny, and pointless
My wife rented this movie based on the cover tease from Entertainment Weekly that said "Joltingly funny!" We watched 37 minutes, waiting for the laughs to start, before giving up. After reading the spoiler comments on this board, we definitely did the right thing. I guess "Chuck and Buck" is funny, if you're the type of person who laughs at the mentally retarded, or delights in seeing a sixth grade bully beat up a third grader, or maybe if you smoke a lot of pot. Also, if you want to see a Grade B actor doing a poor imitation of Tom Cruise at his worst. If you want to see a film about a disturbed man that really is funny, see "What About Bob." Don't waste your time on this.
