Student Body (2022)
As Bad As They Say
I was super excited to see this. And super disappointed. The plot is paper thin, none of the actors give believable performances, there is ultimately no point to any of it and there is no actual horror anywhere to be found. Points for some decent looking scenes and that's it.
Glasshouse (2021)
Imperfect But Worth It
This is a prickly slow burner with a gloomy atmosphere not unlike The Others. It's just incredibly refreshing to watch a film that isn't a reboot or a sequel or an adaptation or a remake. Just a solid original film. Acting is a bit patchy but the way the eerie story unfolds makes it all worth the watch.
Screw (2022)
Kind of like an English Scrubs. Set in a prison. Without the humour.
Strong head character. Unusual work environment. POV from the newbie's first day on the job learning the ropes. Complex relationships with the surrounding co-workers. A fresh take on a very cliche premise.
Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar (2021)
Can't take it too seriously
This film plays out like an extended SNL skit. There are mildly funny moments, bizarre and surreal scenes, a cartoonish storyline and even the occassional unexpected sing-along song. It's hard to tell who the film is pitched to. It's kind of cool to see Jamie Dornan in a comedic role and the jarringly awful comedy has appeal because life is so boring in lockdown.
The Craft: Legacy (2020)
Definitely not a sequel
Let's just get this straight - for all the people defending this as a "sequel" are deluded. This is a remake. It follows almost beat for beat along with the original. This version is insipid, shallow, uninteresting, poorly acted and advances the ideas of the first movie into ludicrous, Disney directions (telepathy, glitter etc). This movie did not need to exist. This may continue to exist as a movie people love to hate, but it's so poorly done that it's hard to find any redeeming qualities about it.
The Boys (2019)
The AntiAvengers You Didn't Know You Needed
In a world saturated by the superhero genre 'The Boys' is the pallet cleanser you didn't know you needed. It's funny, shocking and at times touching and is anchored by the very believable perfomances of Quaid and Moriarty as the two lead protagonists. The narrative touches on very real issues if you're the kind that likes scratching below the surface, but if all you like is action and things blowing up then you won't be disappointed either. There's something for everyone. Even Karl Urban's heroic failure of a Cockney accent is not enough to distract from the stellar production. Cannot wait for season 2.
Black Panther (2018)
The Best Part of the MCU for Ages
Guys your low ratings are a pathetic attempt to smear what is truthfully a fantastic film. Every detail of this film is a fantastic celebration of African culture and perhaps that is lost on the majority of the reviewers here. The overall tone feels fresh: part detective thriller, part balls-to-the-wall action romp, Black Panther's pace had me on the edge of my seat. Truly a fantastic addition to the MCU and the most enjoyable in a long time. Believe the hype. The proof is in the black pudding.
