Kozí príbeh (2008)
I'll try to review this without irony
This movie obviously isn't a 10, not even in the same sense as "The Room" might be considered a 10. It is a low budget animated film with a purposefully grotesque art style. Much of its ugliness is cleverly used to paint a grim picture of medieval Prague, criticizing its inequality and poverty and picking specially at the clergy and the nobles. I argue that it isn't a 1 or a 3 either.
The story is well crafted and intriguing. It isn't overly predictable and has an original and engaging dynamic between the main duo, the Goat and Jemmy. It visibly has roots in Czech history and folklore, which gives it a distinctive identity, as opposed to movies based on classic fairytales and well known medieval stories.
It isn't a movie for children at all, but it isn't nearly as "adult" as some stills may suggest. This may be a flaw, since it is too innocent for adult viewers but entirely innapropriate for children.
Overall, it's a fun watch! It isn't overly bizarre, it's decently written and it has personality, distinguishing itself from most well known animated films.
Café com Canela (2017)
A bold, sensitive and original film from Bahia
I've watched this movie in its debut and it's become one of my favorites ever since. The authors employed an impressive array of techniques that together manage to achieve unforgettable emotional depth. The attention to detail is astounding; the music, the set decorations, the religious imagery, the dialogue, everything resonates in a profound way, specially to those familiar with Brazil and its people. The themes in the film are universal though, and I believe all audiences can immerse themselves in the stories and characters that are presented. This movie received the public's award when it debuted and watching it makes it easy to realize why.
It's a very special movie to me, specially due to its original and vivid depiction of Brazil that can surprise even those acquainted with other brazilian titles. It's the type of movie that makes me feel all sorts of emotions, with unparalleled intensity, and yet never feels melodramatic. There's truth in this film and you feel it.
The Hateful Eight (2015)
A compelling narrative that relies on good story and quirky characters
I was surprised by how entertaining this movie is, despite its long runtime. And what's best: no flamboyant displays of technique and large budget. A honest film, that relies on a compelling story and fine acting. The rather complex plot reveals itself as we watch the interactions between the quirky characters, accompanied by a sensible dose of humour. The overall look of the movie is of good taste, and the influence of old westerns is blatant right in the opening credits.
The portrayal of violence is crude, that's true. That will be noticeable right in the first scenes. But, frankly, no one should expect something different from a Tarantino movie. No complex, multi-layered, thoughtful social critique here; just archetypal (almost bizarre) western characters doing what they do best. By the way, the cast choices seemed very appropriate. Samuel L. Jackson absolutely nails all the badassness, dark humour and integrity his character requires.
I think that the director managed to showcase again distinctive elements of his work, making this a worthy watch. I must admit that some aspects of the gruesome plot left me a bit upset, but that does not diminish the quality of the film at all. Just remember: this is a Tarantino western.
