Midnight Lace (1960)
Way too long for the pay-off.
Doris Day is always beautiful to look at, with lots of nice clothes in technicolor. The story, as has been stated before, doesn't get interesting until the end. Poor Doris goes through tranquil glamour shot to emotional distress so often, it felt like I was stuck in a revolving door with her. Monotonous and draining.
I did have to watch the whole thing, so I could remember the breadcrumbs left along the way. This movie was made 59yrs ago, so I had to wonder if the handheld tape player would have thrown viewers at the time.
This would have been a more satisfying 45 minute Murder She Wrote episode.
Where the Truth Lies (2005)
My aching head
The look and psychological twists made me watch this film more than once. The film is titillating. But, the more I delved into the story, the less satisfied I became. Kind of like listening to someone talk endlessly, but you're too drunk to tell them to shut-up. This film is a bit boozy too.
The Hitcher (1986)
Yeah, But No.
Rutger Hauer is very good in the character which seems to be be lifted from his role as Roy in Blade Runner. My beef is that the movie doesn't answer the question Jim ask John two or more times. Why me? All he responds is "I think you know" with a knowing look. Yes, And... This was good as a white knuckle nihilistic thriller. But, if you open the door to it being a psychological one too, it seems rather hollow in the end. All guts, and no gloryhole. This Review is suppose to be longer, so here's some gibberish. The quick red fox jumped over the lazy brown dog. Mares eat oat and does eat oats. A lamb will eat ivy, if you let him. Yesterday, I saw a man who wasn't there. He wasn't there again today. How I wish he'd go away.
Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (1978)
Some songs are well done.
Yeah. This is a train-wreck of a movie. But, even the Beatles worst madcap movie, Magical Mystery Tour, is no gem. Their movies had a hand-held, home movie style. What's sad about this one is they seemed to pile on a lot of talent and throw dazzle at it. I doubt anyone can justify the dripping cheeseburger as a centrepiece in the main square? That said, 38yrs later, this does have it's good moments. Singing by the BeeGees, Peter Frampton, Aerosmith, EWF and Billy Preston I enjoyed. I don't usually like to hear other artist do The Beatles songs. Last, where will you ever see Carol Channing singing with Tina Turner? Crappy movie? Yes. Worth a look? Yes, at fast-foreword.
Something for Everyone (1970)
Oh why, oh why?
I have the crappiest postage stamp sized conversion to DVD of this movie. I'm joining the chorus when I ask why isn't it on a proper DVD? I too include this film as a guilty pleasure, not because it is inferior, but because it is decadent and so good. It was introduced to me by a friend. For the longest time, it seemed to be our secret. Why didn't anyone seem to know about this film? It had Angela Lansbury, who was in the Manchurian Candidate (pulled by Sinatra for years, I've heard), and Michael York. I've always thought this movie and Cabaret made a great double bill. I guess I will consider myself lucky to at least have a copy, until a proper DVD comes to market.
