Living breathing Pan-Africanism on screen | Excellent!
PAN-AFRICAISM REVIEW
This film is the most flawless example of Pan-Africanism. When an Ethiopian first sees this film he is attracted to it because they see their prime Minister and their culture. After watching the film they know more about their culture and the broader culture of Africa and the Pan-African struggle.
When a person from South Africa watches this film they are learning about Ethiopia and Kenya, and Rwanda. And they all see their inter- connections beyond nationalities and ethnic groups. It is only a film that could do this. Not only imparting information but building a social place where people gather to see this film, and further interacting and understanding the challenges that face their lives as Africans.
The plethora of voices from African-Americans, Ghanians, Malians enriches the story of Africa in the most beautiful way. Someone is strong on politics, and another is strong of culture, these various and differing people however harmonize in one Pan-African song to sing through the negative media image of Africa and speak in dignity reaffirming terms about their own story.
Our Story Our Voice (2007)
strange to here the other side
Some would say that this film is controversial, it has views which are not mainstream, but i didn't see or hear anything controversial. I think people use the term controversial to either get people to not trust it, it isn't a normal view. What happens in this film is the blinding logic isn't popular but it should be popular and you realize something else, the degree to which only one opinion rotates around and around in Western society. and how we get presented with choices from the same coin. this is the context in which our freedom of speech is framed. The film shows the madness behind multi-cultural where we as minority people are almost like flavors, chocolate white people but that is the limits of how much we are accepted and to go beyond the boundaries set by those controlling society is to be maybe seen as a threat. And they have so many labels for those that define themselves against the grain. What i gained most from this film is how inescapable it is to escape medias perception. Even if you are aware you absorb so much even without knowing. I am happy i saw this film because it is like a repellant to that because i can re-frame the lies within a new window and have a different take on world events.
The Idea (2006)
Art film really sends a message
The idea is a very smart title the film has a serious tongue in cheek feel to it. But it is so subtle you don't know how to read it! Are these guys doing a full blown comedy or is there something else going on. The little dialogue the film has isn't very delicate and this adds to the power of the film. If all the sound was switched off from the film it actually wouldn't take anything away from the film. The physical actions or the art of showing is so strong that it on its own carries the entirety of the story.
I is a blessing and with the blessing the emotion is followed by shame. I first say this film as part of a "black" film festival. After watching the film i was so impressed by the work. But then i asked myself what next? Where can someone else see this work? The common association of art without purpose isn't to be found here. You can see the intention in the design from the start to the finish. The usage of African music the style the casting everything seems planned and for a reason. The character development is amazing. The casting i think is the strongest aspect of the film; the characters are easily defined within 2 minutes of the 6 minutes of actual film.
We need to see more of these kinds of films, there really needs to be greater support for the development of short films across the board.
