Five Nights at Freddy's (2023)
One positive for this film
The animatronics. That this the sole positive aspect of this film. That's it. Everything else is garbage. It was painfully obvious what was happening, who Lillard's character truly was. I cannot quite understand how this waste of time made it through. It is a definite slap in the face to fans of the game or, honestly, movie fans in general. I adore Lillard, however, his appearance was just terrible. There were no scares to speak of, the backstory was just abysmal, the aunt was a waste of time, and the characters annoying as hell.
I regret wasting my time watching the entire movie. It's likely the worst I've seen in a while. Willy's Wonderland was far, far superior and worth watching over this trash.
Liebes Kind (2023)
Phenomenal
I cancelled Netflix for a few years because of the exceedingly poor quality of content. I just restarted my account and Dear Child was the first thing I watched. It is among the best, if not the best, miniseries I've watched on Netflix. The acting, the atmosphere, storyline, everything about this is just stellar. I haven't been this emotionally invested in a series in a very long time and it honestly reeled me in from the beginning. I hope this is a harbinger of better quality content being released in future on Netflix. I watched it in German with English subtitles and am so glad I did. I think that just made it so much more effective. I see other reviews regarding the ending, however, from start to finish, Dear Child is excellent.
The Blacklight (2021)
The absolute worst
I've not watched a movie as bad as The Blacklight - ever. Even The Room is better. There is absolutely nothing positive about this movie - nothing. Terrible acting, a laughable plot, or what there was of a plot, poor attempt at "humor" and atrocious writing. It isn't even a matter of having a low budget. I've watched movies with low budgets that ran circles around this garbage. It's just that bad and then some. Where the positive ratings came from, can't be accurate or genuine. No one with even the slightest level of intelligence would find anything redeeming in this garbage film. Really, don't waste your time on this.
Halloween Ends (2022)
Not a Halloween film
Halloween Ends is not a film that is fit to be included in the franchise, must let even fit to have been filmed. Corey was a pointiness addition to a film that has absolutely no redeeming qualities. Allyson was just disgusting and even Laurie was a cheap shadow of the original character. Our beloved Michael Myers had maybe 15 minutes of screen time, if that, despite being the entire POINT of the Halloween franchise. Halloween is Michael Myers, not idiotic add-on characters, not even Laurie.
If Halloween Ends was meant to be the end of Michael's story, fine, but why kill off such an iconic character in such an offensive, pandering manner? Why focus on characters who really add so little to the franchise? From start to finish, Halloween Ends, is nothing more than a money grab and not a good one. Easily the worst film in the franchise, and that's including Zombie's adaptations. Actually, easily the worst horror film, ever.
The Sandman (2022)
Usual Netflix garbage
I don't know why I even bothered. It's my own fault. I should know better than to expect anything of even the minutest quality from Netflix. The writing is terrible and the only character I could honestly say I liked is Lucienne. Love the actress who portrays her as well. Whoever portrayed Sandman is likely the worst actor I've encountered. Just awful with no skills to be seen and the absolutely most annoying voice.
I do enjoy Gaiman's work and I have to think that maybe he had no voice in this? I hope? In anyone else's hands and with a cast overhaul, this could have been wonderful (but keep Lucienne). As it is, nope.
The Stranger (2022)
Pure garbage
I cannot fathom the high rating for this "film." It has no plot, terrible acting, is disjointed, and is complete and utter garbage. What was the storyline, was there a storyline? Was the dialogue supposed to be so mindless? Even the one positive review highlighted a lack of plot. Decent films have been made with ambiguous plots/endings; however, they have other positive elements. The Stranger has absolutely nothing to offer, nothing good anyway. I'm guessing this is just another push-through Amazon film like so many others that are completely useless. Save your time and watch paint dry because it will be more interesting with better actors.
The Open House (2018)
Taste is subjective
I understand the bad reviews. There is no neat resolution to The Open House. But, to me, that makes it even more disturbing. Lots of nice tension, very good acting and keeping the mind open equal a good time. No, The Open House isn't in the realm of Strangers, true, but it's that same feeling that good horror films create. No reason, no carefully laid out path to follow, just terror. But that's why we watch horror movies (even though this might be better classed as a thriller), to be afraid, to be disturbed, to think. Or at least I do. I can imagine he's the neighbor's husband or the man almost killed in the road. Or maybe someone completely random who gave in to his demons. It's really up to the viewer to decide and that's good filmmaking.
The Rental (2020)
Blindingly stupid film
The Rental is among the worst films offered in Netflix suggestions. How embarrassing for Dan Stevens. Pointless plot, wooden acting, characters who I was gleefully happy to see bite it and below par killings. There is absolutely nothing to like about this film. Other reviewers who trotted out the laughable, "but you didn't get it!" truly do make me laugh. What was there to get? There was nothing ambiguous about this film. "Open House" and "Strangers" have done this fare far, far better with characters who are actually likeable, actors who can act and without the woke garbage. There is no tight tension and ambiguity in this film, just crap.
Aftermath (2021)
Worst movie I've watched in some time
This is just bad all around - bad acting, plot, dialogue - all of it. I understand the two leads were in a troubled marriage but there was no chemistry whatsoever and both were wholly unlikeable. Idiotic unsupported plot, unneeded characters and, of course, a springling of woke garbage. The dialogue was pretty much what you'd hear on social media. Was this a Lifetime movie? If so, it's bad even for that. The only good thing I can say about this movie is I appreciated seeing Sharif Atkins again.
John and the Hole (2021)
Empty art house film
Despite its lack of plot, this film isn't that difficult to understand. However, that it tries to be a pretentious art house film is laughable. It's just bad. I get that the kid is trying to demonstrate how he feels trapped, maybe inside himself, I don't know. It borders on pointless or maybe it's just pointless. It certainly does not deserve more than one star. The idiotic inclusion of the a scene with an abandoned girl is likewise pointless. Honestly, there's no reason to watch this film; it's among the worst I've watched.
Cidade Invisível (2021)
Could have been something
This could have been better, it should have been better. The writing and acting are atrocious. This could be an amazingly beautiful story with better writers and actors. I sincerely hope, wish, that this is broken down and rebuilt because the mythology that is inside needs to be told.
American Horror Story (2011)
What was once fresh and intriguing is now woke garbage
AHS probably should have ended after season 4, 5 at most. The current season is just recycled woke crap. Nothing of interest, nothing new or fresh. Honestly when is Hollywood going to understand that pushing politically charged garbage isn't interesting, isn't elitist and isn't going to result in anything other than reduced viewership. Season 10 just underscores how far the series has fallen and I seriously doubt it will ever recover.
The Ritual (2017)
One of those rare cases...
This film demonstrates one of those rare cases in which the film is better than the book. I read the book and it was just okay, not very cohesive or well-written. The film is far, far better and about the best film I've watched in some time. Excellent and strong characterizations, lovely scenery, intensity and plenty of gore. The story, however, carries this film and does not disappoint. I do not believe my bias for British films plays into how much I love The Ritual; I believe it is just that good.
Chambers (2019)
Why??
Although I greatly appreciate watching a series led by a Native American actress (it's about time, also), this wasn't the only factor for my 10 rating. Sure, it's slow paced but that only adds to its phenomenal effectiveness in drawing one in and keeping one interested. Loved every bit of the first season and was enraptured by all of the many, many vivid details. Now I am at a complete loss as to why it's being cancelled?? While so many crap series air season after nauseating season, a stellar, quality series such as Chambers is cancelled?? Not just disappointing but disgusting.
I See You (2019)
Aside from Hunt's performance...
I am unsure why this film received just a 6.8 rating. It is an excellent thriller, fast paced and tightly directed. The storylines and their treatment were exemplary and most of the cast stellar with the exception being Hunt. She was just awful; wooden, slurring words and honestly appeared as though she couldn't be bothered. Despite her performance, this film is fantastic and definitely worth a watch, and deserves a far better overall rating. The fact that Hunt's performance couldn't detract from this film speaks of it's quality.
Warcraft (2016)
This review is biased
I am a World of Warcraft fan, so this review is likely biased (and late). I understand reviews stating the film could have been visually better and I agree. Still, for a first go round I loved it, especially the nice character intros. Acting was excellent and the storyline fit in very well with the games. I will say that the characterization of the night elves was just...no. Should have gone with CGI to avoid cosplay visuals. I am hoping, maybe foolishly, for a sequel. Ideally, I'd love to see a series. Come on Netflix (Hulu, Amazon, etc.), there's a gold mine here.
Knock Knock (2015)
What is wrong with Keanu?
Taking a disgusting and pointless role for this piss poor film is just embarrassing. Why Keanu, why?
The Haunting of Bly Manor (2020)
How I wish this were better
I am always excited when a new movie/series featuring Henry Thomas is released and even though his portrayal of...Henry...in this series was divine, the rest of the cast was just barely mediocre and the plot was threadbare. I don't mind a slow buildup and tension but to achieve that, the story has to go somewhere. The children were extremely annoying, and as so many have already stated, the repetition of "perfectly splendid" put my teeth on edge. There was little cohesion in this series, from the accents that were not at all consistent to Dani's outlandish expressions. I was so hoping this would be something special. It isn't and all I can take away from it was the chance to watch Henry Thomas affect a lovely Englishman, even though his screen time was so limited.
Cargo (2017)
Social messages ad nasuem
Yeah, yeah, we get it; white man bad. The sole premise of this film seems to be yet again showing how evil and dangerous white men are while anyone nonwhite is virtuous. Sorry, but that does not equal a good film. And for those not capable of understanding something so obvious, just observe the skin color of the evil characters in the film. The point of finding aid within an indigenous culture is lost when the film is so obviously antiwhite and that does a disservice to what should have been the real message of the film.
Singularity (2017)
Atrocious
This film was among the worst I have watched in quite some time. The storyline was laughable with scant and poorly executed special effects. Cusack's entire appearance in the film was spent mugging and uttering nonsensical dialogue. The young leads cannot act whatsoever and their dialogue was juvenile and absolute trash. Honestly, the plot that the film tried to accomplish, and failed miserably, could be fascinating and I am hoping a movie can be made, in more skilled hands, although it wouldn't take much skill to make a film better than this. I do agree with reviewers who stated the positive ratings on this film were most certainly not genuine. No one with a modicum of intelligence and taste would find this film anything other than garbage.
War of the Worlds (2019)
Poor adaptation
I understand the aim of this series; minimalist and focused upon character rather than actual plot. However, it was so minimalist as to be sluggish. The lack of blockbuster special effects I understood. However, one-dimensional characters who seemed to have Zero personification coupled with this lack of dramatization equaled a very boring series. I honestly feel that the sole characters who had any sort of appeal were Ash and Kariem.
What Still Remains (2018)
Abolutely among the worst films I've watched
I will admit that I chose to watch What Still Remains simply for Colin O'Donoghue. What a mistake. Idiotic plot, terribly wooden acting, childlike fight scenes. I cannot find anything positive about this film. I am so embarrassed for O'Donoghue. I think he tried, however, even his acting skills were absent. Another reviewer likened the dialogue and acting to RPG characters - perfect analogy!
Midnight, Texas (2017)
Season 2 - Horrible!
I loved season 1 of Midnight, Texas. The characters were developed nicely, storylines were interesting, FX was great. I was so looking forward to season 2. And then...yeah, what a disappointment. The change in character dynamics and the personalities of the characters themselves was a terrible mistake. The producers took an edgy, interesting show and turned into mainstream, sex riddled crap. Oh, and the idiotic social justice messages don't add to the show - they detract. I definitely will not sit through another episode. Should've stayed with the original formula. I mean, one of the main selling points of the show was Manfred's sharply maudlin personality. Now he's just weak.
Take Me to the River (2015)
Not fresh, innovative or interesting
Ideologically divisive film featuring a fabulously artistic teen victimized by his redneck family during a reunion. There is nothing to "get" in this film, it's just pretentious and nonsensical. Although I will say that the actor who portrayed Ryder was excellent and should have a long career ahead of him, the dialogue and actions by the various characters were just laughable.
