The Matrix Resurrections (2021)
the answer to the question: what happened to neo?
I think it's a good movie which addresses some fundamental questions. Like what happens after? No way the machines all just died and Zion won. Does neo die? What was the endgame? That being said, this movie was always gonna be tough to sell.
A good deal of hate comes from people being frustrated this wasn't just fan service but a stand alone movie, that tried to push the limits in its own way. And not too over the top as all the cast aged.
There's a scene in the movie where they're even discussing the meaning of a 4th movie, though through a proxy "videogames sequal".
Would be interesting to read a review of a person who never saw the og trilogy.
Overlord (2018)
Weaaak!
Do not watch if you like good movies. Historical accuracy. Or a half decent and believable storyline.
Ghost in the Shell SAC_2045 (2020)
Don't be fooled by the ratings, or the animation
This is the real OG Ghost in the shell. If you thought the Scarlett johansson remake was good, you won't like this and walk away. But, it's made by the same team as the anime, and it shows. Great show, good story. Netflix did twist it, but the core is solid. Great watch! 8.5/10
They Shall Not Grow Old (2018)
A very general sorry of ww 1 - unexpected.
This isn't a movie with clear character development and storyline per se, but a documentary about (fragments of) the war filmed from the perspective of random soldiers with their stories narrating the images.
What sets this documentary movie apart is the stunning visuals and sound. The remastered pictures are awesome. For me the addition of moving characters to stills, and other dramatisations take away from its authenticity.
Ghost in the Shell (2017)
It's very mediocre
Stunning visuals and cool sci-fi genre are what save this movie from a total disaster.
Casting is wrong and there is no plot. Classic Hollywood remake of a cult-classic which they should have left alone.
Inrang (2018)
Nice
I have seen the anime, this tries to follow the same line and doesn't fail. Surprisingly good with no huge plot holes or inconsistencies. Good action and interesting setting. 8/10
All Quiet on the Western Front (1930)
war is hell
Essential watching.
Pace of the movie was perfect. German perspective of the war also brilliantly adds to what you may already have seen from allied side.
If you like this movie, watch: the big red one, Stalingrad, now you see me now you don't, generation war.
Isle of Dogs (2018)
Satisfying movie from start to end.
Claymation film by Wes Anderson with political undertones of exclusion and persecution. All aspects of this movie fit together quite well and make for a satisfying watch for young and old.
Wonder Woman (2017)
Very mediocre.
All aspects of this movie plainly blend into one another, producing what can be compared to a purée of fast food.
As with black panther rallyin support in the black community, so has this movie done the same with women. This probably is the cause for inflated ratings, and doesn't do right by them.
WW's only got her skimpy clothing going for her, kind of the opposite of what it is supposed to be.
Ready Player One (2018)
If you read the book, get ready to be disappointed.
Not too bad, and a 6 is maybe a bit harsh. Also, not at all the book.
Failed to catch the essence of it, would've been a risk the big fat movie execs weren't willing to take I guess. Highly recommend reading the original and also armada from cline. Even if you've seen the movie!
Bone Tomahawk (2015)
Love it or hate it. There is more than meets the eye.
It's a slow paced movie for sure, but it doesn't suffer for it. Basically, if you like 2 hour westerns, this is a thing for you.
There are many subtleties in this movie that fans of "the hills have eyes" will usually not appreciate (reading from the comments).
Kubo and the Two Strings (2016)
Not for real anime/Asian-movie lovers
It's a half assed western style remake which takes everything from the east without any respect.
Initially I had high hopes, but this movie betrays its origins on such a deep level. If you're not a real fan of anime or Asian movies (esp. Japan) you will not be disappointed, as Kubo takes you on a visually stunning ride with two mildly interesting characters. If you are a real fan, you will know what I'm talking about.
Depth or character development don't even come close to what this movie could be. This is just a superficial, slow paced where it should be fast, fast where it should be slow, abruptly-ended and the worst ending battle in modern history.
6/10
Gokudô daisensô (2015)
not for everybody. gore/action/japan/
This movie is from Takashi Miike so its on the weird side. That said, if you like slow paced Japan style logic and if you like action; this movie delivers in the most pure form. Combining the crazy and absurd.
- " Like Sukiyaki Western, but not a western and way better! "
Story 9/10 Action:8/10 Romance: 7/10 (there is) Acting:10/10 Cinematography:10/10
The story line is insane but also good if you think about it. If you think there are gaps, you need to let go and just take it and move on. There are mysteries in life too and these gaps were put there purposefully. Thats the difference.
Fights are well fought, and the final fight is the essence of fighting: brutal. Its a stupid fight but isn't all fighting meant to be stupid. You can argue, but fights don't decide whose right, just whose left.
Visual aspect is whats most surprising. I watched Full HD. Selected scenes are portrayed in such a cheap way, its almost nostalgic. Reminded me of watching stuff like Power Rangers or Teletubbies. And still it was good.
