The Revenant (2015)
If this doesn't get Leonardo DiCaprio his Oscar, nothing will.
I had the opportunity to watch The Revenant at an early press screening yesterday, and what an exceptional movie this is!
You are on the edge of your seat throughout the entire film, Lubezki's cinematography is out of this world and Leonardo DiCaprio's performance is absolutely riveting and Oscar-worthy. The naturalistic beauty of 17th century America that is visualized in this movie is beyond anything I've ever experienced in film.
Hugh Glasses' story is a legendary one, and they couldn't have honored his legacy any better than this. Alejandro Iñárritu has outdone himself once again.
Not Cool (2014)
An unbiased, honest review
I'm seeing a lot of reviews judging the director, Shane Dawson, on previous projects he has made on his YouTube channel, either negatively or positively effecting the reviews. I wanted to write an unbiased review.
I actually really liked it. Is it comparable to films like 12 Years a Slave, no, of course not. But I don't think that should be a bad thing. Films like Gravity and Mean Girls shouldn't be compared, as it touches completely different things.
It was a visually appealing movie, it had a lot of hilarious and certainly daring jokes and a heartwarming ending. People who get offended easily would probably not enjoy this movie, and that's fine. But to anyone who's open-minded and feels like seeing a funny movie with a lot of daring jokes, this one is yours.
Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters (2013)
Very decent movie, but it missed the 'emotion'
This was a very decent movie. Good and handsome actors, a great story and a lot of mythological portrayals. I think it was full of action and it had some great acting and directing work in it, not to mention the pretty amazing special effects, but one thing did bother me about the movie which is very unusual. Nobody dies or is going to die and you know it.
I know it's a "family friendly" movie, but that doesn't mean nobody has to die or at least something 'sad' should happen? At least 5 times in this movie it seems like somebody is dead, but then they just magically rise from the death. Percy's brother falls into a river with a sword in his stomach, survives because he's a cycloph. Kratos rises from the death and eats someone, after they destroy him he's alive?! A friend of Percy gets stabbed by a monster, but off course they have another way of saving her (this time with the fleece). That scene was literally 1 minute. Suddenly they kill her, everyone cries, she comes back to life, everyone has their make-up back on and mooooving on. Even a person who was considered dead for years, because oh i don't know, she was a tree, came back to life because of that fleece (big 'old cliffhanger).
The actors even mentioned in the film that with the Golden Fleece nobody will die, because they can just bring them back to life. It's like some kind of a cheat and it just takes away all the action.
I enjoy happy endings, but a bit more emotion wasn't uncalled for, because you knew when somebody 'dies' in this movie, that person is just going to come back to life...
