The Menu (2022)

Witty wacky and very entertaining
8 December 2022
It is hard to describe this treat as it is not your typical dinner party guest elimination. It leaves a lot of space for the imagination, and the worst parts are the funniest, as in macabre funny. I loved it. A balanced ensemble of great actors with Ralph Fiennes playing his part perfectly, countered by the gorgeous Anya Taylor-Joy. It has been reviewed as a satire, but yes and no. It is clever, I will give it that. It is not a horror film either, as described here at IMDB. Some blood sure, but not gory. Our audience laughed at the most inappropriate moments, which made the whole night even more enjoyable. It should not be funny, but it is, in a sizzling slow burn kind of way, and delivers a film that is ultimately totally hilarious.

Don't Worry Darling (I) (2022)
9/10
Exceeded all expectations!

The film grabbed me, the cinematography was excellent, fabulous imagery on the lines of the Grand Budapest Hotel. Florence Pugh is outstanding, sexy and captivating, , and Harry Styles made a very impressive first entry into the acting world. It was a great film, a bit edgy, mainly sci-fi. The plot was at times repetitious, and possibly done before, but really a 7.5 or above.

On the plus side it is the best cinema film on the circuit right now, we walked out of The Woman King and traded our tickets for this, glad we did. On the downside, it could have been edited slightly better. More concise. But overall, a good film. Exceeded my expectations by a large mile. Watch out for more from Florence Pugh, whose acting skills are masterful, and even the fledgling Harry Styles was good, who will surely be cast again in something big.

This film will change your perception on not just your life, but all life.

One simply has to see this. It is incredible from so many angles. Yes, it is a well shot nature documentary, but that is not the point. The point is that an Octopus can form a bond with a human, and has the empathy, intelligence and, can I say, love, to do it.

Three days later I am thinking about this film as one of the most significant breakthroughs in our connection to nature that I have ever see.

Wrecked (2016–2018)
10/10
Mildly satirical, a little zany, not at all credible but very very funny.

I am going to add to the review I wrote last year just to say that I think series 2 is even funnier. This is to me is a classic.

I must say the first episode had me crying with laughter. It is not supposed to be even remotely accurate, or plausible, and it is slightly dark but very very funny. Do not be put off by those who propose cell phones would or would not work under those conditions, this is an hysterically funny parody of Lord of the Flies. The funniest show since Veep. It can be silly at times but the pure wit of some of the lines and the absurdity of the situation makes it a must try if not an absolute must see. All the episodes so far have been a pure delight in comical entertainment and I enjoy the fact that there is a progression of the story from episode to episode. One scene, about 2/3 of the way through the first episode ranks to me as one of the funniest I have seen particularity in a pilot. I will not spoil that for you but if your sense of humour is anything like mine you know it when you come to it because you might have to wipe the tears of laughter from your eyes.

Predestination (I) (2014)
8/10
Very good but needs patience
28 November 2014
I chose to review this film because there were so many things that made it brilliant, and so many that could have spared the audience the tedium of setting the stage.

It is a brilliant plot which does involve time travel , and I won't spoil a moment for you. It does illuminate some very intricate "what if" scenarios but it was the excellent plot that hooked me.

But the delivery of a brilliant story was lacklustre. Don't get me wrong, the special effects did their job, Ethan Hawke was pretty good, as was the whole cast. But the Editor/Director should have slashed the first half of the movie to quarter of its dull rambling self and this could have been a classic.

So 8/10 for the second half of the movie. But worth sitting through the 4/10 first half just to get there.

I rank the second half of this film as my favourite this year.
