In the Flesh (2013)
Everything you could want from a TV drama.
This show is one of the best I've seen in a very long time. The cast are amazing, the writing is complex, but not overly so, and, despite the series featuring zombies, it's very easy to relate to in real life. Issues like discrimination are tackled in an eye-opening way without being preachy. There's representation for the queer community, though again, the queer characters are not solely defined by their sexuality, nor does their characterisation hinge on it. The topics of depression, anxiety, self- worth, self-acceptance, and PTSD are explored in a meaningful and honest way. Add to that the drama of families regaining someone they'd lost and grieved for and you've got gold.
I watched the entire series in just over a day and I'm dying for a third one. I can only hope that we've not seen the last of this world as it has so much to offer.
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (2013)
Joss Whedon is my god.
It's been so long since I was this excited for a television series. The build-up to it was so fantastic, I was worried that it would fall short of the expectations I had; it not only lived up to them, it blew them out of the water. The writing was witty, well-paced, and humorous. The dialogue was sheer brilliance. The acting was superb. I am so excited for this cast even after just one episode, despite not having seen many of them before. I had no doubt that Gregg would play his part perfectly, but the others were just as great in their respective roles, giving life to new characters and delivering their lines with perfect comedic and dramatic timing. In addition to the quality of the cast, I was pleasantly surprised to see that the main cast is equally male and female, and that two of those females were women of colour. Not only that, but each female character feels like a three-dimensional person (in accordance with Whedon's usual style, bless him) and not just used as a convenient plot device.
A solid 10/10 and I cannot wait for the next episode to air!
