Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015)
Avengers Re-Assemble!
Firstly, I don't think people should compare this film with the first Avengers. They're completely different. The first one was just about bringing the team together, and this one is partly about breaking them up but also sets up a lot of the future MCU.
I found the plot to be interesting, and different from anything else we've seen thus far. There were a lot of characters, but I didn't think the film was overstuffed or difficult to follow. Although, I do think they rushed Ultron's origin. You can tell a lot of material was removed in the final cut. I also liked how Whedon decided to jump right into the story, without worrying about any sort of build up or explanation.
Some parts of the film were truly funny, such as when Vision was able to lift Thor's hammer, or Captain America scolding people for swearing, and then being told off for doing it himself. I especially liked the scene where Captain America called Fury a 'son of a bit**' and Fury replies with, "Ooh...do you kiss your mother with that mouth?" However, I think there were a few jokes in moments that should have been dark, such as when Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver first encounter Ultron.
I thought the visual effects were great, but then else would you expect from a $250 Million superhero flick? Particularly, Vision looked fantastic. However, I think some action sequences were hard to follow, and the camera work was too shaky at times, particularly at the beginning.
Personally, I prefer the Quicksilver in X-Men: Days Of Future Past, and I don't think his death was very well-handled. I didn't feel emotional at all, although that may be because I had that spoiled for me before I saw the film. I think what killed the moment for me was him saying, "You didn't see that coming?" again. Like, he said it twice earlier in the film, I don't understand why they had to throw one more in to kill what should have been a genuine moment. That said, I liked Aaron- Taylor Johnson and Elizabeth Olsen's performances.
Finally, I LOVED how they used the main theme from the original film, especially at the end. Seriously, I wasn't expecting that.
Overall, this is an entertaining superhero film and a must for fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe or the first Avengers.
The Punisher (2004)
A Wasted Opportunity: Boring And Shallow
This entire film feels like a two-hour trailer for sequels that were never made. It also feels like not much happens in the space of two hours. In fact, Frank Castle is not identified as The Punisher until the last five seconds of the film. It's yet another superhero flick which spends way too much time on the origin story, and, might I add, the so-called 'punisher' doesn't even punish people. We don't get to see executions, shoot-outs, or anything. And there's this stupid sequence where Frank Castle and The Russian are fighting while this music plays. And the film isn't even that violent. It's just so bland and forgettable and it feels like a trailer for sequels which were never produced...for a good reason. There's a few things I like about this film, though. The fight choreography is well-done, I think the film is as dark as it should be, despite what others have said, and I also think Thomas Jane does a good job as Frank Castle. But everything else is just so bland, dull and pointless.
The 1989 film is far superior in my opinion...
Sara and Hoppity (1962)
Great Children's Show From A Storytelling Genius!
Sara and Hoppity! A slice of enjoyable (but somewhat odd) children's television that was originally broadcast in 1961.
Unfortuantley, out of the 52 fifteen-minute episodes that were made, only two are known to exist.
The pilot version of the first episode (dated 1960) is the only means of seeing the show. It is included as an extra on disc one of the now very rare "Space Patrol" complete box-set.
As for the second episode, according to the official 'Sara And Hoppity' website, an episode entitled 'Georgey Georgie Goes Visiting' was found in the B.F.I archive back in 2002. I contacted the website publisher and asked if there was any way of seeing the episode. Still awaiting a reply.
We may be seeing more of Sara and Hoppity soon!
Finally, the series will now seem very dated to modern viewers. It was filmed in black and white, and budget was limited. Nevertheless, it is worth watching if you are looking for something unique and enjoyable.
