Skinamarink (2022)
Can we watch something happy?
What can I say that hasn't already been said in the other reviews?
Plot is thin. Two kids wake to discover their father is gone and there are no windows or doors to the outside. Also, the toilet is missing. And there's... something... in there with them. That's about all you get. The rest is up to the four year old kid in you.
Something about this film invoked a sense of dread in me that I haven't felt in 40 years. It wasn't the thing lurking in the dark that spoke to the children, though. It was the dark itself. It was the unlit corners. It was the absence of the comfort of a parent. It was the strange glow of the TV in a dark room when your unsure of your surroundings. It was that door you left open just a crack.
I'm not sure what to think of this film, honestly. It's not for everyone. It may not have been for me. I'm not sure yet. But I have to hand it to the director for scaring the hell out of me.
Ghostbusters (2016)
Uh... No
I don't know why the rating for this is a 6.9 right now, but I suspect someone somewhere is fudging numbers. I'm just here to help bring it back down where it belongs. And no, it has nothing to do with the all female cast. I blame Paul Feig and Paul Feig alone for this sh!tshow. Everything about this movie is a travesty.
Somehow I'm supposed to come up with 228 more characters in order to post this review. Everything that needs to be said about it had already been said. Everyone knows it's terrible. Just watch the disingenuous interviews from the original cast talking about how "great" it is. Says it all.
The Strings (2020)
The music is fantastic
The film itself... not so much. The camera work and lighting are fine. The audio is right where it needs to be. The acting isn't award winning but it's serviceable. And again, the music is phenomenal. But it's essentially an advertisement for the music. Nothing happens, really. The lead character spends most of the film bathing, on the phone, playing music, smoking, on the phone again, bathing again. Rinse/repeat. So I guess, if the intention of the film was to sell me on the music, then kudos. You succeeded. Teagan Johnston is now on my rotation on Spotify and I tell people about her music. By the way, the lead actress is actually a singer/songwriter, which lends further credence to my theory that this was made to sell music. However, if the director was trying to make an enjoyable horror film, even a slow burn, they failed miserably. 10 stars for the music, 1 star for the film.
Bill & Ted Face the Music (2020)
Most Excellent, Dudes!
The amount of misogyny in these reviews is disgusting. As a man, I watched this entire film and not once did I think "damn, there sure are a lot of women in this movie". It didn't even occur to me until I looked at these reviews. I'll never understand why people get so upset when women show up as strong lead characters in films. (Except the Ghostbusters reboot, which was just bad because it was bad, not because it had women in it)
Anyway, I loved this movie and thought it was a great ending to Bill and Ted's story. I loved their daughters and I would love to see them in their own film with their own adventures. Party on, dudes! Be excellent to each other!
The Twilight Zone: A Traveler (2019)
Could Have Been Great, But....
They dropped the ball in last minute or so of the episode.
This could have been an excellent retelling of the classic episode "Will the Real Martian Please Stand Up", but they completely dismissed the premise at the last second. I kept expecting the Inuit brother and sister to reveal themselves as the "Venutians" who had already begun to colonize earth. With so many nods to to that episode I'm completely baffled as to how the writers just completely threw the twist out the window. Instead they seem to have written part 1 of a 2 part episode of The Outer Limits.
All of the performances were great. Steven Yeun knocked it out of the park. The story was wonderful until the last minute or so of the last act. I'm just really disappointed in the writing. I don't know how you missed such a golden opportunity for a classic TZ twist.
WTF writer's room? Get it together.
Hagazussa (2017)
Fantastic Folk Horror
It's been said in other reviews, but you can definitely compare this film to The VVitch. In fact, this movie feels like something of a spiritual prequel or companion piece to that film.
The score is incredible and really drives home the dark, brooding atmosphere. It's heavy and kind of gets in your head.
I would probably rate this film a 9, but gave it ten to help balance out the one star review by someone with no attention span or conception of how rating something works.
I'd recommend this movie to anyone who enjoys slow, brooding horror. If you enjoy films like The VVitch or The Blackcoat's Daughter, do yourself a favor and check this gem out. You won't regret it.
