Charas (1976)
'Charas' was a plausible entertainer despite flaws
Recently I watched Charas the blockbuster movie aired by Zee Classic satellite channel, the movie made by the legendary Shri Ramanand Sagar who gave us the mega TV series Ramayan and who was in his early days an assistant to none other but showman Director Raj Kapoor.
Charas indeed carried the essence of a desi style thriller with foreign actors and attractive locales but only thing that some how snatches away its beauty is use of 'Wigs' which was rather to be seen as the vogue, not just being used by the character actors, but even the leading lady i.e. Hema Malini !! Yes If the audience has watched Jugnu, and then have watched Kinara or Khusboo, she was in her original hair and looks, but the director rather chose to have her looks more as an actor than the girl next door, the wigs were very popular in those days and right from Ajit to Asrani to other prominent villains every one wore a brownish strands.. Tom Alter was first time seen in a bollywood massala later he himself decided to move to India and continued to work here in thereat and in films. Our Dharam Paji was at his best and gave a memorable performance. Although Directors like Yash Chopra never cast his actors in various costumes, but it seems that Ramanand ji liked to experiment with costumes and wigs...
Watch it for Anand Bakshi's rendition 'Dil Insaan ka ek tarazu.. watch it for dashing dharmendra Watch it for Ajit Yes of course it entertains if you forget the wigs
Rangeela (1995)
Plot & Story inspired by oldies
The Plot idea of "Rangeela" is not original.. its Bollywood inspired by Bollywood itself.
Any guesses ? Well Year -1970 Movie - Mere Humsafar.. only difference here is in the old movie the director played by non other but Balraj Sahini has his eye on the lady and woes to win her, make her career etc., while the poor village boy (Jeetendra) almost looses her to the film world & glamor..
Plot very similar and identical..
Incidentally there is another Aamir Khan movie again inspired by an old blockbuster movie of 1971 and that's Caravan again starring Jeetendra, and the movie is "Mela", but that attempt was a failure, as the Original was too good.
