Star Trek: Strange New Worlds: The Broken Circle (2023)
A slow start
So, was this episode written by AI? That was certainly the impression that I got. There were scenes that were stolen from Raiders of the Lost Ark, from Return of the Jedi and even from another Star Trek show - Discovery.
This season has not started off as well as I liked it. Making up a fake weapon/bomb on the spot to deter the Klingons seems silly. The Klingons are warriors and well versed in weaponry. What if. La'an Noonien-Singh's plan didn't work? It wasn't much of a plan to go on. Not something a serious Federation agent would do.
But of course, the characters are all interesting having Carol Kane along for the ride should be a fun time.
Still going to keep watching.
The Mandalorian: Chapter 17: The Apostate (2023)
Not an impressive opener.
So I'm not impressed with the season opener. It felt very contrived. From the opening monster sequence to the pirates, to IG-11's comeback. And that entire part was silly I thought. IG-11 was being honoured in some way. I think Din was being very selfish in that situation. And it's not a very creative way to bring back the character.
It seemed they were trying to cater to children and it reminded me of playing video games. When Din went to the repair shop and got a quest to go get a specially needed part. And I thought Greef Karga's outfit was a bit much.
There was nothing that really piqued my interest, or had me on the edge of my seat. There were many moments like that in the first two seasons. But of course, I will continue with the series. I don't hate by any means.
The Last of Us: Kin (2023)
One of the best shows today
I have been enjoying this show quite a bit from the opening episode, but episode Kin, made me fall in love with the show.
I was assuming Joel Miller was going to be the resilient tough guy type that would be able to handle all problems that may come their way. It was interesting to see his vulnerable side. I really hope we see more from that location at the commune.
In my humble opinion, Bella Ramsey deserves to be nominated for best actor awards across the board. A truly wonderful performance that has me anxious with anticipation looking forward to more episodes.
I suspect we are in for more good stuff.
She-Hulk: Attorney at Law (2022)
One of the better super hero shows.
She-Hulk has surpassed all of my expectations. It's original, funny and well written. They have somehow made every character, even those with the smallest roles humorous and interesting in some way. I loved Jennifer's family and all of her dating prospects were hilarious. And that was unexpected. Having She-Hulk dating in the show was a lot if fun. Good stuff.
I don't get the ratings, but that really doesn't matter. It's the amount of streaming minutes that does. I really hope this show does well and we get to see a second season. Keep watching people. I know I will be for certain.
She-Hulk is a hit in my opinion.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds (2022)
A Star Trek for me
This is the Star Trek that I've been waiting for. An episodic show that brings you something new every week. You can see elements of both the original series and TNG series of shows interwoven into SNW. And it works very well.
The characters are all great and interesting. The technology has been updated nicely without being overdone or excessive.
Obi-Wan Kenobi: Part IV (2022)
Terrific episode!
Blair once again shone as Leia. It's easy to see why she was cast.
I am also loving the Reva character. Ingram is doing a great job as the shows antagonist.
It was a nice build up with Kenobi getting back to his old self. That was nicely done.
A couple repetitive tropes going on there, but nothing that took away from the show. Sometimes, clichés work.
Obi-Wan Kenobi: Part III (2022)
A solid 10.
Vivien Lyra Blair was great in every scene. She easily stole the show this episode.
Moses Ingram as Reva is a great character. It will be interesting to see what will occur between the other Inquisitor and with Kenobi. This series may end the Inquisitors all together.
Another interesting character has been introduced, Tala, played by Indira Varma. She may be the one who inspires Leia.
And of course Vader was beyond terrifying. Without the Imperial March playing.
Obi-Wan Kenobi: Part I (2022)
Surprises inside...
The return of Obi-wan Kenobi is not at all what I expected and am pleasantly surprised with the way they are going with this limited series.
One unexpected actor has shown up in this episode. I hope there will be more.
Children of the Gaza War (2015)
War in Gaza
The most heart wrenching film I have ever seen. I was aware of the events mentioned in the film, the children being bombed on the beach, and the children's school being attacked, but seeing the victims from Israel's brutality close up was shocking.
Jenin, Jenin (2003)
Israeli Apartheid and Genocide against the Palestinians.
Jenin, Jenin shows the world why armed resistance is the only way forward for Palestinians.
They suffer immeasurable losses at the hands of the brutal Tel Aviv regime, and yet they still persevere.
This films shows us why Israel is the scourge of the Mid East.
The Beatles: Get Back (2021)
An eye opening adventure.
Being born in the early 70's, The Beatles were before my time. I never got to see them in the media or on TV as their career was progressing.
For me, The Beatles music was just always there. You would hear their music wherever you went. They were just a part of ones life. It's like leaving your home in the morning and hearing the birds sing. Sure they are nice, but you tend to take them for granted. It isn't until you stop, pick up a pair of binoculars, study them and truly see their beauty and how wonderful they really are.
I didn't have a concept of how great The Beatles were until I took the time as an adult to learn more about them. Pour over their albums and get to understand the magic of it all.
Get Back gave me even more insight to that magic. I was amazed at how silly and carefree they could be, but at the same time be absolutely professional and put together those numbers.
And I loved how we got to see their personalities. John appeared to me to be very intelligent and witty. Ringo was great, no drama with him at all.
The Suicide Squad (2021)
So much fun.
This film was great and John Cena was the best part of it.
Never thought those words would ever leave my lips, but there you have it.
I loved the obscure 60's heroes they used and I am looking forward to the sequel with hopes of seeing many more from early DC comics.
The New Mutants (2020)
Supposed to be an introduction folks.
This was a great and unique super hero film. I won't get into why the good of it all, but explain why I think the masses didn't care for it.
When you are introducing new heroes to the film universe they come with no history and the film makers need to create all of that for the audience. It's difficult to do in a 2 hour film with many new characters. A single character like Deadpool gives you the time you need to tell the story, unlike Suicide Squad, where there were too many heroes and not nearly enough story.
The New Mutants were supposed just to be a introduction to the characters for us so the story wouldn't be lost or ruined. If the audience understood that, I think we may have better ratings here.
Unfortunately due to the ratings, we may not see any more from this. I hope I'm wrong.
Dune (2021)
Better than the original.
Yes. I never thought I would be saying that.
Villeneuve did an astounding job at capturing the feel of the 1984 film, but still making his new and captivating for the older viewers.
There is some serious world building going on here and I believe the intent is to rejuvenate the franchise with creating more films.
Well Villeneuve and company have my full support.
I really loved how they fed us more info on things like the energy shields and the hydrations suits.
Looking forward to the next one...
The Mandalorian: Chapter 16: The Rescue (2020)
Emotional roller coaster.
Another wonderful episode. Great action all around. I love how absolutely loyal the remaining Empire followers are.
I don't think Star Wars has ever made me cry before. A first for everything I suppose.
The Mandalorian: Chapter 15: The Believer (2020)
We need more Mayfeld
Bill Burr was absolutely fantastic from beginning to end. Such a great episode.
Star Trek: Discovery: Forget Me Not (2020)
Best Star Trek Episode in Decades
This is the best Trek episode since Dr. Phlox was kidnapped by Klingons in Enterprise.
Personally, I am not that big of a Discovery fan. It has things I think are great, like all the interesting characters, and I love the updated alien races. But overall, it wasn't firing on all cylinders for me. I didn't feel the emotion when Burnham and Discovery were reunited. Even though it was over a year, it was only an episode to fans, and we didn't see the struggle that Burnham may have faced surviving that year. So the dramatic scenes were lost on me. But Forgot Me Not was fantastic. It gives you that emotional attachment to the characters that you need to keep watching. This episode did that with many of the cast, and of course Adira is a wonderful new addition.
The Funhouse (1981)
Scariest film I ever saw.
I believe I was in grade 4 when I saw The Funhouse. It scared me like no other movie has to date. So much in fact I won't watch it again.
Mulan (2020)
Could have been better.
It did not live up to my expectations. Not all bad, but not great. Editing is lazy and the film is a bit clunky. There were some funny moments, however I'm not sure if they were paying homage to the older martial arts films or not, but they had those scenes where everyone is laughing way too hard at lame jokes. Which I didn't mind, I thought it kind of funny.
There were no real surprises. It was typical and predictable. They had an array of interesting characters that were completely wasted.
Children will no doubt enjoy it.
The Last Kingdom (2015)
One of the best shows ever.
The Last Kingdom is far better than Vikings. Every character is exceptional. From the brave warrior to the sneaky weasel, I loved them all. I have never saw a show where I thought all the roles were great like they are in The Last Kingdom.
Star Trek: Picard: Nepenthe (2020)
The best episode so far, but...
Whoever wrote for Will and Deanna did a great job. Their characters were captured perfectly and are the best part about Picard so far. Their kid Kestra was great too.
What really annoys me is that the producers let us in on who will be returning to the show. 7 of 9, Will & Deanna, and the former Borg Hugh. I assumed that they would have been in the first episode, so informing us of their return was no big deal. But they came into the show in later episodes. And their appearance was very predictable. I knew it was going to be 7 in that ship, and I knew it was going to be Will and Deanna in that house. That should have been a pleasant surprise.
It gives the impression that Picard is just the catalyst for folks to purchase CBS All Access. And when the producers let you in on stuff like this, it makes me think the show isn't going to do well and they are trying to build up an audience with teasers. Like the carrot before the mule.
The Romulan ninja elf is just dumb. Obvious attempt to attract a new young audience. Nothing wrong with that I guess, they have to make money. Just not liking it personally.
Hugh has died already, Allison Pills character has betrayed them. Like Discovery, they are cramming too much conflict into a single season.
And as I said before, it cannot be in the same universe as the TNG series of shows. Everyone is a drunk or on drugs, or shoveling mounds of red velvet cake in their face because of depression. They are making it like Earth is today, and that isn't what Star Trek is. Our society was supposed to have evolved far beyond that type of life style. Ugh.
Star Trek: Picard (2020)
Not your old Star Trek
It's good...so far. OK I liked it, but it's not like old Trek at all. It doesn't even seem to be in the same universe. They have sensational news media on Earth, which of course is a corporate money making entity. I thought we were beyond that by Kirk's era, let alone Picard's. And Jean-Luc Picard would not have let himself be so easily baited as he did with the news reporter. That was a shameful representation of Star Fleet's finest Captain.
Things I liked; well Data's daughter obviously. That is really cool. The show is more bloody and violent than our old Trek was. And the Borg cube being reclaimated was a very interesting touch.
I'm still on board for the next episode.
Dolemite Is My Name (2019)
A wonderful film.
I enjoyed every second of this movie. A funny, happy feel good film from start to finish. Eddie Murphy is back.
Once Upon a Time in... Hollywood (2019)
Don't bother
This was a complete waste of time. There was no story, no plot. It never went anywhere. Tarantino uses Sharon Tate and the Manson Ranch people to keep the audience watching with anticipation but unfortunately delivers nothing. It was random scenes that had no meaning.
The Mandalorian (2019)
The Mandalorian is an instant success.
The Mandalorian has all the elements for a successful show and it delivers them well. Star Wars has always been geared towards a young audience and The Mandalorian is no different. But the cute and funny moments are just that,
cute and funny but it works very well. No eye rolling here yet.
Through 4 episodes there have been many cool and interesting characters, scenes and moments in general that keep you in anticipation for the next episode. Great writing too.
