Secondhand Lions (2003)
I just love a tall tale
And this movie is full of them. Put two of the world's most lovable old men together, who just happen to be two of the world's greatest actors, with an impressionable young boy and you can bet there will be some great stories told.
Deciding where the real stories end and the tall tales start has always been difficult for a boy. And it still is for me.
This movie made me forget I am an old man. I became young again, for a summer. There was adventure, guns, airplanes, and treasure. What more could a boy want? I can't believe Second Hand Lions was nominated for only 5 awards.
White Hunter Black Heart (1990)
Best movie about a movie
Generally, I steer clear of movies about movies but when Clint Eastwood is involved and hunting in Africa is involved, well, pop some corn, sweetheart, I'm gonna prop my feet on the coffee table.
Eastwood is so convincing in this role I plumb forgot he is my favorite western character, Josey Wales.
I suspect the fact that John wanted to kill an elephant turned some viewers off and that is a shame for they missed a great performance, in which no elephants were killed.
I have been a hunter all my life and when John said, "It's a passion that's beyond you. I'd have to explain to you the sound of the wind and the smell of the woods. I'd have to create you all over again. . . .and stamp out those years you spent on the dirty pavement in cramped shoes." we connected and there was a tear in my eye.
And this is what a true artist does...he relays an emotion, from the writer to the reader; from the singer to the listener; from the actor to the viewer.
I predict White Hunter Black Heart will gain popularity as time goes by.
Tanner Hall (2009)
The Facts of Life Movie Rated B (for boring)
Through the years I have seen many movies about kids in high school, kids in private school, kids in military school, kids in camp, kids on a ball team, and kids in a dance group. This is not one of those movies.
I searched for an outstanding personality, in a field of superb acting by the girls, but could not find one. Generally, the main actor "makes" the movie for me and this movie, it seems, did not have one. Kids coming of age almost always presents an interesting story and, I suppose if I had been a poor little rich girl that attended private school in New England, this movie may have appealed to me. But it made little sense, otherwise. This movie seemed to be more of a few days in the life of, rather than a complete story. The Facts of Life Movie, rated R, might be a better project for the producers.
Six Gun (2008)
Stinks to high heaven
This movie is so bad it inspired me to register and post a review! All reviewers so far, have been way too kind. The only redeeming quality of this film is the acting is actually better than some high-dollar movies I have seen. The producers should have hired some writers. Making up the dialog as you, go never works. The local high school drama department should have been hired to produce a better product. I suspect someone with too much money wanted to get his girl friend into show business and this was his bright idea. There is no way to write ten lines of comments on a movie this bad without coming off as being vindictive. I had nothing to do with the making of the movie, yet I am embarrassed because I normally enjoy watching Westerns. How do I get a refund on the time I wasted waiting for this movie to get better?
