House by the River (1950)
Gothic Classic
This movie is terribly underrated in my opinion and one of Fritz Lang's best movies ever. Despite there being no big superstars in this the acting is superb and the story is very interesting and well written.
The Super (2017)
Val Kilmer's Great, the Movie is Pretty Good
With Val Kilmer you never know what to expect any more. He often just mails it in or coasts (and apparently can be a nightmare to work with) but when he decides to turn it on he can still be a great actor. It's nice to see him at his acting best again. The Super is a mystery/thriller with him just in a supporting role but he steals the show.
The movie is about Phil Lodge who moves with his two daughters into an apartment building in New York City where he has the job of superintendent. Kilmer plays Walter, a resident who is very weird. Pretty soon the residents start disappearing...
The movie takes a simple concept but gives it a nice twist that actually for a change wasn't expected by everyone watching. It's got a lot of gore for a non-horror movie but as a thriller it has some great scares. I'd recommend it.
Encounters at the End of the World (2007)
Antarctica
This is a very good documentary by the much loved German (Bavarian) director Werner Herzog.
He travels to the U.S. McMurtro (?) base in the Antarctic because he wants to see the landscapes of Antarctica and also visit the wildlife of the area and see what makes the characters tick who actually choose to live there.
The views are breathtakingly beautiful in many cases and these characters are interesting.
Werner Herzog is a very good director and with this movie he became the first director to direct features on all seven continents.
Pain & Gain (2013)
Not Very Good
This movie is not very good. I'm sad to say it because I was really looking forward to seeing this movie and I am a fan of the actors who are in it.
There are a few funny parts that actually made us laugh but they were few and far between with most of the movie just boring and seeming like a waste of time. There were also a lot of parts that did not make much sense and I am not a big fan of plot holes so I didn't like that at all, I won't get into them because I can't do that without giving away some of the plot.
Not a big fan of the director either, this is just another sub standard movie from him. Better than most of his other stuff though, which is usually straight up crap.
