The Great (2020)
Don't allow History to get in the Way of a Good Story
That said 'The Great' is a ripping good yarn with enough historical accuracy to keep this buff immersed. Frequent breaks for forays into Wikipedia for this & that help me out.
A wonderful cast also plays a big part as does the soundtrack. Sets & costumes are sumptuous as befitting a serious historical drama. Which makes the comedy all the more biting & invigorating. A definite page turner... :)
The Circuit (2007)
Well worth a catchup
Having been added to streaming service Stan The Circuit is well worth a watch. Consisting of only two seasons this up close and personal examination of hard life in the Kimberly region of northern Western Australia pulls no punches.
Our Cartoon President (2018)
POTUS & MAGA CREW HATE THIS SHOW
The fact that this gets so many 1/10 ratings says it all. It's working as intended. Sadly, the humour so closely reflects the reality of the Trump White House it's both hard to watch but equally unmissable.
Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014)
Theme of Militarized Police - timely
"Captain America" is another excellently made Marvel SuperHero film. Action - It's got the lot, a car chase that'll leave you breathless, epic battles, moral dilemmas, corrupt public officials, crazy weaponry and yeah, great bods. The lot. But this also has a chilling metaphor delivered brilliantly and in a enjoyably over the top way.
Our Super Villain though is not a person per say, rather, a totalitarian structure. Sure, the crazy Nazi Dr antagonist speaks for it. But the theme is all about the world of BIG data, the willingness of lawmakers to use it and the militarization of law enforcement. You'll love the Helo-carriers!
Libertarian Tea Party 2nd amendment fans will love it - Government over reach. The other 80% will also get it. Also Government over reach..
The Company You Keep (2012)
Great material; Terrible execution.
The late 60's, a time when student / youth rebellion was at a peak throughout the western world. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, Malcolm X, Medgar Evers, Kent State. The non-violent, peaceful Gandhi style of resistance was losing some of its gloss and appeal. Out of this frustration The Weather Underground, aka The Weathermen was born . They weren't so peaceful. Many were caught, some went on the run.
As I said "great material" But don't expect gripping suspense or a meaningful examination of the era or its links to present day America and its place in the world.
Not even close. It's weak sauce. Our investigative journalist is about as believable as Katie Couric and the freedom fighters...well.
