The Twilight Zone: The Fugitive (1962)
I think it was great!
I am a huge fan of The Twilight Zone ... and as my fellow reviewer pointed out, this one is pretty sappy. Well, sometimes that is a good thing! I personally loved this episode. It was a sweet ball of fluff, and sometimes we need that!
I found the relationship between "Old Ben" and Jenny very sweet and I did not find it "creepy" (It was a different era as H. pointed out) He seemed very grandfatherly. - When the surprise ending was revealed though, I was not COMPLETELY surprised. I mean, I never really expected him to be a handsome young man (I assume the aging process on his planet is much much slower!) ... but it all made sense. There was something very child-like in his character. (Like Clarence from It's a Wonderful Life) The fact that it was said that Jenny grew up to be the Queen to his King was also not entirely a surprise. No, I never for one second believed there was more than a friendship type love between young Jenny and "Old" Ben ... but there was deep love. Then we you see the age difference become shorter (well, you know what I mean) it makes sense that they eventually became romantic as she grew up. It's happened before in real life.
Great show!
August Rush (2007)
"I" thought it was AMAZING! Needs to be seen!
I've read the reviews. Just like everything else, some people love it, some people don't. How boring the world would be if each individual didn't have their own opinions or the opportunity to think or feel for themselves.
I don't even know why I bother reading reviews. I don't like people telling me what I should think or feel ... Then why am I writing a review you ask. Well, this movie totally moved me and I feel compelled to tell everyone that this movie deserves to be seen. Then you can decide for yourself how you feel about it.
For me personally, this is the best movie I have seen in a long time. My only complaint was that it wasn't long enough. (I sure hope the DVD has deleted scenes! ... and a director's commentary because I would love to hear the creative process.) Like another reviewer, I also thought of the story of "Oliver" when I saw Wizard and his gang. That made it even more interesting to me.
Amazing movie. Just amazing ...
The Water Babies (1978)
I Love this movie ... even though it is far from perfect
This is a movie that I watched when I was a young girl and never forgot. It is certainly not the best movie ever made, but there is something very special about it that I can't quite put my finger on. I LOVE it. I am the kind of person who likes everything explained to me though and for that reason alone this movie drives me crazy.
Exactly what/Who is that mysterious witch-lady and what is her relationship with Tom? WHY and HOW did he become a Water Baby ... why was he raised on the earth? It is questions like these that are just eating at me! I thought if I read the book I would get answers, but I just read an article that the book from which this story is "based" is a lot different. So I guess I'll never know what the writer was thinking!
I still love this movie though and I recently watched it with my two year old niece. She loves it too although she insists on calling it "Baby Water" for reasons unknown to me. She loves the part where he jumps in the water and then declares "I'm all clean." (You have to understand that my niece is the cleanest 2 year old in the world!) We watched that scene over and over.
I am so glad that we can enjoy this film together! There should be more films like this. (But what is up with the gay seahorse??!!)
The Prince & Me II: The Royal Wedding (2006)
Almost Unwatchable
OK, I don't care what the critics say. I LOVED the original. I am a movie person and I just feel that a good entertaining movie doesn't always have to be a mind altering experience. Good fluff can be just as endearing! Anyway, I was curious about the sequel even though the guy at Blockbuster warned me. " You don't want that ... it is straight to video and doesn't even have Julia Stiles in it!" I am the kind of person who needs to know how a story ends though, so if there is a sequel I'll watch it.
GOOD GRIEF! I can't stand slapstick and there were so many scenes that I had to fast forward through. It was just AWFUL. - This movie isn't ANYTHING like the original. For starters, the new cast is horrid. The characters of Paige and her mother-in-law to be were seriously dumbed down. (The former Queen was more like a Caricature than the complex - for lack of a better word - character from the original ... and Paige - oh boy, let's just not go THERE. I will ONLY say that the original Paige wouldn't have set a date until AFTER she graduated med-school - and maybe even after her residency!) And didn't Edvard have a sister? She must have run away and joined the circus never to be heard from again.
Then there is the plot itself... Haven't we already seen this like a dozen or more (many more) times? Evil and dim-witted relative wants to scheme to take over the throne - or at least get a piece of it. YAWN! How many more times are we going to have to sit through this plot? (Oh and don't forget the ever popular plot of the girl who does everything to sabotage your relationship so she can steal your man while she pretends to be your best friend. SIGH! My Best Friend's Wedding should have retired that plot!!) The sequel could have been good. It really had potential. This was a ripe piece of excrement!! I just can't believe it.
Jack's Big Music Show (2005)
This Show "Rocks"!!!
I am in my 30's, but I am not embarrassed to admit that I really enjoy watching the occasional "children's show". (Especially now that I am a proud aunt of a very smart toddler) Jack's Big Music Show is one of the best children's shows I have seen!! It is very entertaining and the music is great. I love how it mixes segments of music videos into the show.(Some of the songs stay with you for days! I haven't been able to get "Under a Shady Tree" out of my head for a week now ... but that isn't such a bad thing!) I also really enjoy some of the characters that I have seen so far on the show. Like the LITTLE Bad Wolf (BIG Bad's baby brother) and who can not smile over the Schwartzman Cortet!!
Hardcore children's show fans may recognize the voices. The voice of Jack is also the voice of Baby Bear on Sesame Street and Mary was the voice of Julie and Sizzle the Cat on Puzzle Place. (I had to come on to IMDb to find that out because it was driving me crazy! The voices were so familiar!!) If you are a Muppet Fan and a music lover, you just might enjoy this show ... no matter how old you are. BUT I Guarantee THE CHILDREN WILL LOVE IT!!!
I am editing this comment because since I have submitted it, I have read some things about this show that I want to address:
Although I made the comment that adults will love this show, we have to remember that THIS SHOW IS INTENDED FOR PRESCHOOLERS. I have read comments that go as far as complaining about the music on the show saying, "The music is frenetic and emphasizes rhythm over tune and lyricism" ... Does this person even KNOW a preschooler??!! When is the last time you heard your 3 year old comment about a song's lyrics? (Unbelievable!)
My opinion is my opinion and I can't convince anyone to like something they don't - but it is just not fair to compare a show for children to that of adults. But I happen to know that I am not the ONLY adult who feels like a good children's show is worth it's weight in gold ...
This show is really good!!
The Wedding Date (2005)
It had potential...but it decided not to use it
I knew what this was when I went to see it. I also knew that it didn't get good reviews, but the films I like never do. I admit it, I LOVE the so -called "chick flick." Wedding Date though, fell flat. I am happy to see it is based on a book. I think my generation has seen a lot of movies that were actually better than the book (although I grew up with the attitude that the book was supposed to be better) but I can only hope the book will fill in the gaps that this movie left.
It had great potential. We already saw the plot in Pretty Woman and knew that if done right, it would work. Unfortunately, this movie was not done right! There was no character development. The writers expected too much out of the audience (for example, it took me to the middle of the movie to figure out that Kat grew up in England after her mother remarried - that was hardly explained!) We are expected to believe that the 2 main characters are falling in love ... but we don't see it!! They never showed us any real romance between the two of them and all of a sudden they are in love ... it just doesn't make sense! Sure, I enjoyed the movie. It was OK, not horrible ... it just COULD HAVE BEEN so much more.
Fat Albert (2004)
Better Than Expected
I remember watching the Fat Albert show as a little girl. I really enjoyed it and was pleased they were attempting a sort of "come-back." However, from the previews, I got the impression that this was going to be a very "silly" movie. (Think Kenan Thompson in "Good Burger") I was very pleasantly surprised.
I know this movie has gotten bad reviews on here (mostly on the message board), but I really enjoyed the movie. It was great family entertainment. It was entertaining, funny and sweet all at the same time ... and Cosby kept it very clean. I am not sure why this movie wasn't rated G. (Would that have made it the ultimate kiss of death?) I wish there were more movies like this!!
By the way, I LOVED the ending where Bill Cosby was with his childhood friends...the inspiration for the "Cosby Kids"
The Phantom of the Opera (2004)
Sexy Phantom works very well.
This was definitely NOT the phantom from those old black and white movies ... nor is it even the phantom we have come to love from the musical stage production. No, this phantom is different. This phantom looks (and acts) as if he just stepped off the cover of a dime store romance novel (unbuttoned billowy white shirt and all!) - Somehow it worked. It worked quite nicely indeed. (Even though his voice wasn't as strong as the others. I found out he has never had singing lessons.)
I have mixed feelings about this movie. I am a huge fan of the musical and I was quite excited to see this film. I was surprised and delighted how closely it mirrored the stage play ... but with extras that you can only get on the screen (like the gravestone scene at the very end) Actually, a lot of confusion I had about the play were cleared up for me by this movie. (Except for Madame Giry. How could she seem younger than Raul at the end when she should be at least 15-20 years older?)
The reason I said I had mixed feelings is because the film was beautifully shot and the characters were done so well, but during the film, I was bored.(The entire cast was fantastic! I couldn't imagine anyone better in any of the roles). ... The weird thing is, I saw the film 4 days ago and I can not stop thinking about it. So maybe I was just having a bad day.
I want to see it again.
