The Righteous Gemstones (2019)
Moist Garbage
I didn't laugh once. Not once. The sides of my mouth did not move the entire hour of the premiere.
McBride plays the same basic character in all his HBO shows.
The subject matter is fertile, but this project is underwritten and for a comedy doesn't seem to follow through on any of its jokes.
State of Grace (1990)
Could have been so much better
Great performances ... everywhere ... the script was awful ... Stevie was in two scenes and all the sudden we're to expect that Jackie would give everything for him? No smart boss would ever get his hands dirty and kill a lowly soldier like Stevie. Get a fn' clue. Ed Harris was the biggest posse boss I've ever seen .. backbone please? Penn was fine. But Oldham stole the show. Irish muscle? Sean Penn couldn't ever be Irish muscle unless he grows 10 inches to five foot. I myself am Irish and I am 6 foot and 215 lbs. I eat too much fried food, but I write brilliantly .. my buddy Rory says he's gonna get me a gig writing gags for a TV show starring Todd Bridges and Jill Whelan, I don;t know who I feel worse for.
Tom Goes to the Mayor (2004)
I once lost the nail on my big toe
And that was funnier than any single moment on this show. I mean the nail came back and all but for like four months it was exposed. I wish this show would go he way of my original toenail -- thrown away in a dirty tube sock.
This certainly can;t be considered funny by anyone -- can it? I mean it's like the kid in your 7th grade class who sings songs into his dad's tape recorder, then he brings them to school and he laughs while the rest of the class just sits there feeling pity and shame for hating someone so much, knowing he's trying to bring laughter to the world, but to spend so much time on something so inconsequential feels karmonically wrong.
Coffee and Cigarettes (2003)
An honest review
This is a film that the proletariat will not get. It's themes are deeper and more complex than the average person will be able to grasp. Its depth can be measured only by comparing it the Marianas Trench. And in deference to the film, I think every DVD or VHS of this film should be dropped down there.
Robert Benigni and Steven Wright's opening number will tickle your funny bone and make you shake your head in delightful confusion and sympathy for these seemingly talented performers. It may confound you and make you think that it's an unintelligible, self-referential piece of tripe, but YOU would be wrong. Then there's Jack and Meg White's tip of the hat to Nikola Tesla. This is heart-wrenching stuff. Those of you who aren't knocked to the floor with the dramatic weight of this scene must have ice-water in your veins. Yes, the Whites are musicians, but here they'll play your heartstrings like some sort of woodwind instrument. An emotional triumph.
Overall, I can't write enough about the fecundity of this feature. Jim Jarmusch is an auteur. He must of had one heck of a pitch to get financing for this picture, because on the surface it has no redeeming qualities. But if you dare to look a little deeper and spend some more time with it, you might just find that your initial interpretation was correct.
Dirty (2005)
Saw the premiere last night
Some great performances and a good story. The score was really cool, setting the mood throughout the movie and I thought Gooding did a convincing turn as a cop. Inevitably this will be compared to Denzel Washington's performance in Training Day. And although the budget for this film was probably a quarter of Trainign Day's, I think this film is superior. Why? The last 15 minutes in Training Day were a mess and tainted the movie. Here, the performances are on par and there's no ridiculous John Woo-type chase/action scene to end on. Clifton Collins is great and Gooding reminds us what an actor he can be if his agent gives him a halfway-decent script to work with. I recommend.
