Sole Survivor (2000)
Slow and stupid (contains minor spoilers)
I have real issues with movies where they insist on making the characters as dumb as fence posts. This is one of them. If you are being monitored by the evil government then don't call your best friend on the phone to tell him where the secret meeting he doesn't have any interest in is being held. If you are about to die just tell all, there are no consequences to spilling it all now. If you must steal a car don't do it in front of the bad guys, or at least change cars.
Then there's the pointless religion, what the heck has belief in mythical beings got to do with this story.
They didn't wrap up the loose ends either. Not that we are interested in finding out what became of the minor characters. Just glad it's over.
This was small part mystery, small part new age clap trap, large part padding.
And why do I have to stretch this out to 10 lines when some other reviews are one liners.
Adam (2009)
Another portrayal of Aspergians as mental cripples
So the dude has Aspergers. Great. So Aspergers is an autism spectrum disorder and what they have chosen to portray is someone a lot closer to autistic. The average Aspergian is just about like anyone else. Like me. Like about fifty out of the two hundred people in my tech company. Like most of the people in technical roles in Microsoft, Google, Intel and many other high end companies. So how sad he has Aspergers. So, he's probably going to have a decent and well paid job but he's likely to prefer fixing his car to fixing his relationship.
So when are they going to make movies about women with BPD? Women are much more likely to have BPD in the same way that men are more likely to have Aspergers. I've dealt with both, I'd rather someone was technical and a bit distant than evil.
The rest of the movie? I was too angry to notice.
The Incredibles (2004)
Pixar's best yet
I was privileged to see a pre-release of The Incredibles tonight at Pixar. It would be unfair to Pixar to steal their thunder by saying anything about the story. On top of that we were asked by our host not to discuss anything about the movie. So I'll stick to generalizations.
I am amazed at the continuous improvement in Pixar's productions. The lighting, the smoothness of movement, the believable (almost) physics and the incredible imagination that go into these things is astonishing. You can start to forget that it's an animation. It was non-stop, there isn't a moment when there isn't something whether it's part of the main story of just the expressions of the characters and the little visual gags. I expect I'll have to see this several times just to try and see everything that was going on.
Unless you are fundamentally opposed to animation this is a must see.
I can't wait for the release on November 5th, I want to see it again NOW. If I could pre-order the DVD today I'd already have done so.
Absolutely outstanding.
