The Eyes of Orson Welles (2018)
Incredibly pathetic.
Pretentious, Malick induced Irish whispering masquerading as art, self indulgent, moot content, and more about the documentary's love of self, then love and insight into a truly great artist. One word keeps popping up in my head to describe this monstrous waste of so called cinematic space - pathetic.
Magnum P.I. (2018)
Uh...no..
Was actually rooting for this but here's the issue. Hollywood continues relentlessly in their stupidity and arrogance, to focus on glitz and more glitz and - more glitz. It is a shame because Zachary Knighton is very talented actor. I say actor because he is the only one with a moniker of craft. The rest is just showboating bravado or caricatures disguised as acting. The main issue? Character. There is ZERO character development. None. Zilch. Oh the studio heads and creators think there is, but the weak writing negates any character subtlety compared to the original. Hollywood refuses to infuse 'heart&Soul into their creations. It is sad as the suits are most certainly quite arrogant, have too many degrees, and have too much money on the line to be told what to do or understand how shows and films electrify the audience. It's heart. The original was filled to the brim with it. From Magnum's love of Oreo cookies and PB&J Sandwiches. Higgins love of history and sense of honor. and decency. T.C's teetotalling and Hurumpffs over Magnums irresponsibility, to Rick's naivete and boyish innocence all wrapped up in friends that meant something to one another, and us. We loved them. We were with them wholeheartedly. You do not do this with Maxim Magazine writing and slick banter between supposed friends who just rip one another. Oh, They will try to infuse some sense of caring, to pull the heartstrings of the audience in future episodes with predictable writing, but it will not work. Their idea of character development is pandering. Their idea of a hip show is casting for racial diversity, which we are all for, but it should not set the precedent when making art. Explosions galore. Car Chases - Bikinis - banter blah blah blah. We've seen it all before. I'm sure a studio head reading this is responding saying - we're not in the making art biz, we're in the making entertainment biz. Yeah, uh-huh, which is why you will fail. When you create to make profit, or pander, and not from your heart, you WILL fail. The original had so much love, so much soul, so much heart, so much skill and craft implemented by all the main cast all the way down the line to the supporting gust stars, the dogs, the Estate, Magnum's swims in the Tidal Pools, his smirks, his studious attention to detail when even making a chili dog. It was all pure art, and beautiful. I give this 1-2 seasons tops before the plug is pulled.
