The 8 Show (2024– )
1/10
Boring rage bait riding the coattail of squid game
26 May 2024
It's just trying to be more shocking and memorable but fails miserably. An interesting plot turns into lazy hate and rage bait and shock value halfway through the show. Some of the acting is too obvious, things take too long, characters spend literal minutes trying to figure out very very simple things, it's frustrating instead of thrilling. The characters are lifeless, very stereotypical. Half of the time I watched this was spent listening to number 8's annoying laugh. We get that She's the "psycho". No need to make her yell "hey, I'm a psycho" every 2 minutes. Nothing in this show is subtle, and it's not really clever either. This show thinks everyone considers pointless drama, violence and low IQ storyline as "entertainment" so it gives us that. Can't really argue that it's provocative and that usually gets you clicks, but this one is just a lifeless copy of more successful shows in this genre.

Really?
16 April 2024
So you take the vast imaginative world of fallout, you take whatever billions of dollars of budget, practically any actor or actress you want out there... and you come up with this? It's so bad it's shameful. Cardboard conversations, acting so dull it killed any interest I had and I forced myself to see through the edit of predictable scenes that is the first episode. If it wasnt for the sex and violence I would've thought that this was aimed at children. Fallout is cheesy and fun, this is like a sitcom with laugh track. Everything is so over explained, obvious, the cringe I get from thinking that someone put thought (barely), effort and money into this hurts me after a while of watching. Such a waste. 20 minutes of bad slow mo fight scene with cute music is not doing it for me anymore, not after seeing it for the 300th time. Nolan listed cliches in this series. And also, the main character, who did the casting? Someones intern nephew? I find it hard to believe that someone so bad at acting is the star of this show when there are so many talented people out there.

Mahsun J (2024– )
9/10
Pretty good
1 March 2024
These guys are the best storytellers I've seen in a long time, that's for sure. They do a great job at reflecting the problems and lives of these complex, unique and very real characters. I want to mention Sultan (eniste) especifially here, Ayca Damgaci blew my mind with this role. The way she mimics that spesific type of character with all its male mannerisms is incredible. I'll be sure to follow her works more closely.

I appreciate this series for taking a wild swing while most others dig around with a spoon. It's refreshing and I believe it would be encouraging for others in the industry. Raw, honest, fresh, fun with a capability of taking it all the way to the darkest side while still making fun of it all. That makes Mahsun J unique.

Still I have some criticism, of course. The storytelling may be top notch but the story is very awkward at places. Like bahar's husband's storyline feels like a whole different show with a slower pace and very shallow vibe, like those 3 hour dramas on mainstream tv. And I don't get why leyla's character has to be so unlikable and irrelevant. Like deniz said in the last episode, I find myself saying "cok gerek vardi" at Leyla at times.(Deniz is one of my favorites btw) I get it, she's the straight man of the show but man, every time she talks it's to berate mahsun or express displease. I'd like her to be more layered especially how much screen time she's given. It's like there are many failed attempts at connecting leyla to the main story but it just doesnt happen. The quality dropped slightly with every episode and now I feel like it's a 7/10 for me instead of my original 9/10 unless they make a glorious finale that ties all the mess together, but I also like to be encouraging so 9 from me to you guys. Very solid effort overall.

Bad.
23 February 2024
Bad acting, bad cast, a story that was perfectly fine, now turned upside down for the sake of adaptation. So far two attempts have been made to make a live action ATLA. This one fails just as bad as the first one in my eyes, they both lack soul and this one is another shameless corporate attempt to milk another childhood favorite. If "Having the new generation meet with your childhood favorites" is the purpose, then let the new generation experience the real thing, that is NOT all that old, and even it gets old, its timeless. No need for.... whatever billion dollars thrown into making the cleanest possible CGI. I'm enjoying how thirsty these people are for money, and they can't get good reviews that arent bots. Hoping and knowing this trend of not making anything new and original has to die sometime.

Bihter (2023)

Underwhelming
22 November 2023
Warning: Spoilers
After watching the trailer I thought I was getting a well done period piece and a fresh take. However anything that is good about this film is already crammed into the trailer. I thought Farah Zeynep Abdullah could act, I guess not. Rest of the cast doesn't do a good job either. Disconnected, discombobulated, the story doesn't flow at all,the characters are almost unaware of each other. Fleabag had soul and technique. This film lacks both so breaking the 4th wall every other second is unnecessary and cringy. Don't do it if you can't do it well, please. I like the overall look, the color story being a tad too obvious, still it doesn't go beyond being a piece of eye candy without any notable substance. And if I want eye candy there are much more enjoyable and artfully crafted pieces out there, both foreign and Turkish. And the ending.. It was laughable, stripped the story from its peak.

Bihter doesn't provide anything beyond some catchy scenes that would fit better in a 5 minute music video setting where you don't follow an obvious story and bits and pieces of nice imagery is enough to accompany the music.

Underrated
22 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I enjoyed the film, considering what it offers, which is just mindless fun, it does what it promises. 4.8/10 is honestly too harsh, though most of Emrah Kaman's work is seriously underrated. I enjoy his physical comedy, which he toned town considerably in this film, but by doing that he left more breathing room which was cool. I enjoy Okan Çabalar's style as well, I think the three leads had good chemistry and overall balanced each other. Male casting for this film is done well overall. I like the descend into insanity and darkness, and not ending on a happy note, as similar movies tend to do. Liked seeing some realistic consequences. I found the pacing a bit too fast, there was a lot happening all the time, so if the movie was slightly longer it'd feel less crammed maybe. Overall it's a solid 7/10 IMO.

The X-Files (1993–2018)
5/10
A bit disappointing
21 October 2023
I guess I knew I was taking some risks while watching a series that began 30 years ago, but the X-Files kinda proved to me once again that some series only live because of the hype they receive, not for their quality.

Having heard and read for pretty much all my life how awesome X-Files was, but never getting to watch it, I admit I had somewhat high expectations. It was described as "timeless" to me, I would prefer "very spesific to that time".

The main story moves agonisingly slow. Mulder - having hoarded years of evidence - is unable to actually communicate and function at all, he can't even convince his partner with solid evidence. Scully is supposed to be his anchor but maybe because she has to swing so far to the other side to balance Mulder, she sometimes forcibly falls into the boring category. After hearing so much about how Scully changed shows everywhere, presenting a solid character, I'm thinking wow, it must be bad before. Scully is presented as a "skeptic" but she hates being outside of the mainstream narrative. Even when there's tangible facts and evidence present, she always has a way of rolling her eyes and having zero percent curiosity about the mind blowing events that she experiences. That and being locked away or two steps back when something unbelievably paranormal happens. That happens once or twice. Every single time means lazy writing.

I get the appeal 30 years ago, you couldn't search the internet for creepy stuff and X-Files is just that, some creepy event once a week, accompanied by an intriguing but weak plot, with leads written with "what two characters could give the best 'will they or won't they' vibe?"question in mind. Haven't seen the whole show, but main story being so stretched up, I can't imagine it coming together solidly. I can take suspense and the progression being slow, but deliberately tiptoeing around the topic, not asking the most obvious questions or spending 10 minutes on trying to understand something that a child can put together in a few seconds is not good suspension. I dislike overly flashy sci-fi, but most scenes feel unnecessarily subdued.

My 5 stars is for the character Scully, though I imagined her wildly different, much more curious and open minded for starters. The Scully Effect caused women to participate in men dominant fields more in real life. That's gotta count for something.

Couldn't listen to one minute
2 August 2023
The female voice of this documentary is the one most annoying sound I have ever heard in 30 years. I was incredibly interested in the subject and wanted to know more but I could NOT listen to that monotone valley girl voice for even a minute nor I could understand how could anyone find this acceptable as a documentary. She desperately needs classes on emphasis and intonation. I mean what happened to Morgan Freeman and all those actually nice voices. I don't know who Amber is but speaking, reading is not her strong suit and I wish producers noticed that.

I have nothing else to say about this production because I was not able to watch it and I'm very salty about it because the subject is super interesting.

Meh
16 February 2021
When I found out about this show I was so happy to see this kind of competition in real life. The more I watched it the less excited I was about it.

1. I don't care about sob stories. I really don't watch a car show to know about drivers' personal lives. Don't think anybody does. Some people had back stories so they got more screen time talking to someone, explaining the hardship in their lives, or just commenting while some others got squished into 1 minute quick recaps. (Being pretty and american works very well for this situation. Make sure you're blonde and arrogant if you ever want to participate in this show. You'll get so much screen time)

2. MUSIC MAN. give me some music, something with bass. The weird thriller-ish background music doesnt do anything

3. Commentators, they were annoying. They didn't really tell me anything I couldn't already see and understand, I'd like someone with a bit more depth of knowledge

4. It is very disappointing that people were not paid in any way even after destroying their cars for the sake of the show, and no prize money either.

5. Why leveler? Such a buzzkill challenge. Slows the whole thing down. Some other challenges were not completely safe either.

So it is a good idea and kinda fun to watch but it has that low quality american sensationalism mixed with reality tv predatory behavior which is super ugly. I just wanted to see skilled drivers go at it. Kinda got that. Kinda didn't.

It could be really good, but it's not.
8 December 2020
Warning: Spoilers
It's a pretty solid concept but the execution leaves you unsatisfied. I liked that it had a different perspective on time travel, fight scenes look good and well made. Robert Pattison, even though I was skeptic about it, did a very good job, you can say that he's determined to not be remembered as that sparkling guy. I didn't like that the movie had to cling on to so many cliches to make a story and make you care about it. So russian man is ruthless bad guy, the one woman is a slightly updated (but not too much that she can actually handle anything without getting emotional and messing it up, god forbid) maiden in distress, the protagonist is a guy whose only characteristics are being good and american. This is a very good example of how you can mix every single cinema cliche in one single film.

The movie is also very fast paced, and every single dialogue counts. If you miss one you won't understand what's happening in the rest of the movie, period. I wish it was a tad slower - and I'm saying this as someone who enjoys fast paced works- so that we could kind of digest what happened and prepare for what will happen next. Because a lot happens in this movie... a lot. Editing is also a bit disjointed for my taste.

It's also very action-heavy with exploding this and shooting up that every other minute. It's almost like someone had a good idea, then it got butchered and hollywood-ized.

Overall it is watchable, it does make you curious because of the concept, and doesn't really beat around the bush, but it doesn't give you a lot either.

Mediocre, prenentious, predictible
29 October 2020
That's it. Making a movie slow as hell does not make it good. I didn't hate Ryan Gosling for the first time and maybe it was because his face didn't move, not even once. It was not even ironically funny how they all tried to keep straight faces while reading their cringy lines. The plot was really obvious from the beginning. Character motives were really shallow for a film that pretends so hard to be deep. Jared Leto, my poor man has become a sign of a bad film now. I would like to see more shots of the world to be properly immersed in it but that didn't happen either. After almost 3 hours of unnecessarily drawing out scenes and not delivering anything, the film kinda tells you that something big at the end is coming. And the main message turns out to be "I can have a baby so I'm human." I laughed out loud at this point.

This film proves that Hollywood will take any film with a shred of soul and the slightest possibility to make money and turn them into soulless, empty, formulated films that have no artistic vision and no geniune emotion other than the need for making money. And the audiences will eat it up.

Altered Carbon (2018–2020)
5/10
2 seasons, 2 different shows
1 March 2020
I feel like I have to split this review into 2 because two seasons of Altered Carbon are very different.

In season 1 you get sucked right in. The human nature is laid naked in front of you showing every single detail, some horrible and some absolutely beautiful. I love a good cyberpunk feel, and the overall the atmosphere is very realistic. The world is beautiful. Acting is top notch, casting is well done. I love how layered the characters are. Joel Kinnaman does a great job portraying Kovacs. Actions scenes are well choreographed. They don't feel like "here is your grand action scene". The feeling I get is a unique combination of melancholy, brutality and beauty. overall it is a top notch series with lots of layers. Not a single unnecessary line, not a single thing pushed too hard. There is no "trying to give a message" here: everything is calculated, balanced and so so intense, you immediately get the creator's vision and that is hard to do well. I was really impressed.

Season 2: a complete downgrade. Butchered everything that gave the show a sharp edge that it needed to push its message across. The main actor is good but too likeable and mainstream to pull off a character like Kovacs. Even the singer from the first episode was a better fit. It is obvious there was less budget this season. Action scenes were pretty bad like they were from a cheesy action movie. There was no unique "altered carbon"feel and that was the most disappointing thing for me, it felt like a completely different show. I actually laughed out loud at a scene where they go into a bar and there are people in weird bathing suits weirdly dancing around... like is this how you establish a futuristic theme? It looked like an old Black Eyed Peas video where they used aluminum foil to create a cyberpunk feel... It. Was. Bad. I did not care about the characters and did not find them relatable or likeable at all.. even the bad guys of season 1 were interesting and relatable. I forced myself to watch halfway through the season but my interest only decreased probably because they did not really care to build the characters and make us care about them before unloading a huge story through them. I didn't even care about Kovacs after a point. No nudity either which was an important part of the aesthetic and the message - you really did feel that these sleeves were disposable. This season is a lackluster even though the fact that it goes deeper into the lore. At the end of the first season I was DYING to find out what happens next. Halfway through the second season I stopped caring. To cut it short it turns into a generic sci-fi show that tries to give the audience "what they want", play it safe and get more viewers instead of staying true to the vision that was established in the first season. Which really sucks because season 1 was better than any generic mainstream sci-fi action that is going to be unwatchable and forgotten in just a few years. I gave it a 6 for the sake of the first season which is a masterpiece. Hopefully we get a 3rd season that is even better than season 1. It would be a shame if this show got cancelled because how underwhelming season 2 was.

Warning: Spoilers
Judges had favorites, that's for sure. Angel and Minju - while they had pretty good works, all of the silhouettes were completely the same. Everybody else tried to go out of their comfort zone and they stayed in what they did the best, and got carried by the judges. Many looks were misjudged in my opinion. Alexa could be a fun host if she was paired with someone else maybe, Tan was just being annoying and cringy 90% of the time. By the way please get someone to dress Alexa because obviously she can't do it well by herself.

You have your sandwich ready, you want to watch something while eating but don't want to scroll through hundreds of tv shows trying to decide what to watch, this show is what you're looking for. Don't take it too seriously if you want to enjoy it, take it as an opportunity to see some interesting designs.

Wth happened?
22 November 2019
There is not much of acting, no real storyline whatsoever. I am in shock that people say that this season is as good as the previous seasons. All episodes are rated 8.5 - 9.0 . Are you serious?? No effort was put into this season. Not creative - nothing new - just reheated old inside jokes. They just let it go and you're eating it all up. Not sure why. Disappointing and bad.

A great comedy
20 July 2019
I love this movie and to me it is one of the best comedy works of turkish cinema history.

However if you are not familiar with Turkish culture this movie is going to be hard to understand. Consider it a parody of well known turkish classics and make sure you watched them. Jokes are layered and sometimes very subtle. Jokes are very hard to translate. There are a lot of puns that don't work in English. This is a sarcastic, gritty, campy take on every single cliche in Turkish cinema. These cliches reflect our society's insecurities and hangups, as well as weaknesses and strengths. So seeing a movie that makes fun of all these things indiscriminately was a fresh breath of air.

I also love absurd comedy. The more absurd the better for me. I legit cracked up watching this. The cast was great and the acting was good too.

Unbelievable
20 July 2019
Even though this show is all for laughs and giggles, when you're taking on such a serious matter, you should be careful how you put it. This episode gives me the chills because it tells you it is okay to bully your spouse into doing what you want. Which is an incredibly toxic thing to do obviously. And for once I thought I was getting to watch a decent comedy without characters getting the baby fever. I enjoyed Amy as she was, but of course, women need to have babies in order to be complete (!). I just don't understand how can these guys have written great episodes that support equality but still can't let go of the 19th century "all women have a biological clock and it takes them over" mentality. Jaw droppingly bad episode and mindset. Really disappointed.

Sorry, Bianca
24 June 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I love Bianca Del Rio, I think she is a comedic genius. Watching her is entertaining, end of story. Even though the first film was definitely better than the second, I still think she hasn't had the chance to show her full potential. I love Katya, and she did a great job in the movie. But it just wasn't the kind of explosion I expected from these two hilarious queens.

Rex character was kind of pointless. I laughed at him exactly twice. One was when he first arrived in Russia, looked out of the room window and said "hey, I can see Alaska from here!" And Alaska was outside, fighting two russian women for bread. I died laughing there and thought to myself "this is going to be a good one!" But unfortunately that wasn't true. And there was so much material too. And I really wanted to see them put Katya's twisted sense of humor in a better use. the bulky animated rat gets a special mention. It was out of nowhere and I didn't get why it was even there.

Overall I watched it and had a few laughs here and there, but only because of the talented queens. The story wasn't very good, but I weirdly enjoyed it. It is campy and absurd, but it could be much more campy and absurd with this cast. I hope to see more works from Bianca Del Rio and of course our lovely Katya.

Didn't meet expectations
14 April 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I expected more from this movie. It was very "meh", and because I had very high expectations I had to give it an unusual 3 stars.

The cast was great, McAvoy kept the movie interesting enough that I didn't walk out no matter how much I wanted to. I really enjoyed watching his character(s). Sarah Paulson was a good choice for the chaotic neutral, creepy psychiatrist. Some characters seemed to be instructed to keep a perfect straight face no matter what happens- let it be your loved one dying in your arms or something else- which felt like they were trying too hard. It wasn't realistic and that kept reminding me this was a movie and I had a hard time getting sucked in.

The movie was so slow and kept making me think that there was more, so much more, after all this build up I thought I was going to get a mind blowing ending. Nothing happened, most of the stuff was very predictable. The "twist" at the end created by the super-intelligent villain(?) was very weak. The whole thing was stale, it was one note. Also not a big fan of the cool palette. There was no contrast in anywhere, nothing was pleasing to look at. My personal dislike of hospitals and closed areas did not make it easier.

Did not like it, it was boring, and not because I expected a super-cheesy super hero movie, I'm not even a fan of those. The execution and the pilot just wasn't strong enough to me. Every other scene I rolled my eyes because the movie approached everything in the most cliche and superficial way possible. Which was weird because I think this was a whole new angle on the super hero hype.

Fleabag (2016– )
10/10
Great show!
10 April 2019
I love this show! I love how it shows real-life stuff that we don't usually get to see on screen. I love how it fearlessly says all the things I've thought about in the back of my head. I love all the confusion, because life is one huge confusion, and it always amazes me how everyone else can pretend that it's not. I love that Fleabag does not pretend to know what she's doing.

One other thing I love is characters. Especially the sister. I knew someone who was just like her. Maybe that's why that character felt so alive to me, but nevertheless you can tell she had been carefully constructed just like other characters.

At first it was a little challenging to get used to talking to the camera thing, but in second season I was glad it was there. It wasn't bad before, just a little unorthodox to me, considering I enjoy more traditional approaches better.

With the second season Phoebe Waller-Bridge proved that Fleabag isn't a one-season-hit (if that's a thing). Second season felt smarter, wittier, darker and funnier. Can't wait for the season 3.

Actually liked it
9 December 2018
I liked it. It's a clean show. Everybody is very ambitious and respectful. I learned quite a few things from it too. And it's very exciting to watch. I've been looking for something with this level of enthusiasm and excitement.

A few things though; the host has a different energy than the show. I don't want to say irritating or annoying but he's definitely not the person I would prefer. He shouts a lot, maybe that's why.

I would also prefer to have a Russia or China episode instead of USA. They don't really have a very deep culinary culture so it was kind of a hit and a miss.

There were A LOT of judges at the end. Made me think how many of them actually participated in the final decision. We saw them get up and form an awkward circle and from what I saw two or three people actually said something.

And one final thing. I really think that someone on the top of their career should not participate in this. There were people who had 2 Michelin stars. They were already pretty acknowledged and in my opinion didn't need the attention and the boost in their career. And they were chefs for looong years. That creates a gap in the skill and the mindset. Younger chefs took bigger risks, they wanted to step away from the traditional more, and because of that they put up a more interesting fight. I liked seeing them interpret traditional dishes and tell beautiful stories. But in the end the ones that played it completely safe made it to the final and in my opinion that was not fair.

A complete "meh"
9 November 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Ever since G.O.R.A. Cem Yilmaz's production quality decreased bit by bit and with this film it hit rock bottom. The film gave me a few chuckles here and there, but failed to really entertain as a whole. Cem Yilmaz can still crack a smart joke and make you think. The nostalgia part was too long and didn't really click with the rest of the movie. It felt pointless and overplayed. There were plot holes here and there but nothing major. I would like to see more of Ceku but she got so little screen time. It's like she became a wife and a mother and her life ended. She gets rescued by the hero, then sits home taking care of the children forever while her husband is out there having adventures and traveling through time and stuff. Pretty good example of a turkish man's mindset and view on women.

I wasn't super bored or anything, I wasn't really entertained either, just had time to kill and this helped. Gave it 4 stars compared to other turkish films came out at the time which were so terrible I wouldn't even be able to watch for 5 minutes.

The Office (2005–2013)

Above average quality, just not for my taste
31 October 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I don't like anything about it at all. I don't like the muted, dead colors. I don't like the wobbly camerawork. I don't like to watch shows that people look into the camera and explain themselves. I understand that this show has a whole different style. Unfortunately it's not for me.

I finished this show because I had nothing else to watch and my friend basically pushed me to it. Jim and Pam are the worst, in spite of the fact that they are the straight men of the show they are just terrible and unlikable, not in a funny way, in a frustrating way. What's worse is there isn't another layer underneath this horrible boring couple. That's the only thing they are. Even though their struggles and personalities were realistic I have no interest in watching realistic yet unfunny stories.

Best character on the show is Dwight. He was fun to watch and unlike the other characters, pretty unpredictable. When some other character opens their mouth you know what they will say next: depending on the person, something really offensive /sexist / homophobic / boring / weird / superficial.

Even though I cringed every time I saw him on the screen, Michael Scott was what kept the show alive and breathing. After him the show just flatlined.

And the ending. It was very cheesy, glossy, fake. It was like the writers sat around a table and discussed how to please the viewers in the easiest and least creative way. It kind of amazed me how bad it was.

Some people compare this to It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia saying they're similar. I'm a fan of dark, weird humor and IASIP. I don't see how they can be remotely similar.
