Manic (2001)
Storyline OK, Acting Brilliant
This film was really good, not for the storyline as that was quite average but because of the performances of everyone in it, main or side characters. Joseph Gordon-Levitt can definitely carry this movie. His performance as Lyle the teenager with the uncontrollable rage who doesn't believe he should be in a institute. Also It was good to see a role of Zooey Deschanel that didn't irritate me.
The only thing that slightly annoyed me in this was the camera work, some bit were good then in the next shot the camera was all over the place shaking. The director also used close ups a lot especially of the characters eyes. The quality of the film was good I liked the fact it was all recorded on a Sony PD150 digital camera.
The Art of Getting By (2011)
A Must See Independent Film.
'The Art of Getting By' isn't a big Hollywood film, there is no action, no special effects. It is however an independent movie driven by story like other films like '500 Days of Summer'' or 'Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist'. It's not out to shock you or be another cheesy high school film, just a down to earth real life love story. Something that could happen to you.
Now young Freddie Highmore (Finding Neverland, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory) is all grown up in this drama. George (Highmore) an artist who lacks any motivation, has never completed a days homework in his life. He feels that life is meaningless and there's no point worrying about schools or assignments.
After being put on academic probation, he befriends a girl called Sally (Roberts) who is miserable at home and hides it while at school by putting on a brave face. After talking George and Sally learn that they have a fair bit in common.
Later George attempts to learn something about art from another painter Dustin (Angarano) who seems to take him under his wing and become a sort of mentor to him.
Soon George learns how to see the world as something to embrace and how it's not so much of a horrible place and how one girl can rekindle a spirit.
Freddie Highmore could always act even back in 'Finding Neverland' but I properly saw it in 'August Rush' in 2007 when he carried the whole story (away from Jonny Depp who also appeared in both the previous films mentioned). In 'The Art of Getting By' there is no change that he is still got more acting skills to show us that many his age don't possess.
Video Game High School (2012)
You'll Love But Don't Expect The Film To Be Serious.
This was a web series funded by the website Kickstarter and then put together to make a film length production.
This is set in the near future where video games have become the number one sport in the world. It is about a kid call Brain, a young aspiring gamer who gets into VGHS (video game high school) after by pure luck he manages to kill "Law" who is the number one gamer during a public match. After getting to VGHS brain has to overcome a lot of obstacles as he finds out that this isn't what he expected. This shows all the problems you see in every high school film but done in a very different ways.
First if all do NOT take this movie seriously as it isn't done in that way. It is a comedy, tongue in cheek and once you go into it knowing that your love it.
The acting in this is good for the tongue in cheek film that it is and I was glad to see actors that are fairly unknown but still have that 'I know them from somewhere' feel as you most likely seen then pop up in something else but one offs.
It's Kind of a Funny Story (2010)
A Great Watch
'It's Kind of a Funny Story' is an Independent movie based upon the same titled novel by Ned Vizzini. About his experiences self checking himself into a mental health clinic due to the advice he got from the suicide hot line.
The cast in this is great Keir Gilchrist is the main character Craig and delivers a excellent performance Of the boys who has the tendency to have suicide thoughts. He is helped however by the very skilled supporting cast Zach Galifianakis, Emma Roberts and Lauren Graham to name a few.
This movie is something you can relate to if you have or have had any sort of Stress or pressure in your life. I for one can relate to Craig's character deeply, as I feel very similar.
Mai wei (2011)
So much more than war
My Way shows that Korea not only can do horror, but that it can do amazing films In any genre. This film is basically two and half hours and yet less than nine minutes in I was already hooked.
Inspired by a true story My Way is about two young boys, one Korean and one Japanese, who meet each other as ones family relocates. Both have Dreams of running The marathon in the Olympics and are in rivalry from the start. But when a certain event happens when they are older it becomes much more and they become enemies. Then WW2 is declared and both are forced into the Japanese army (two different ways though). Not to give to much away but after many twists and turns in the film they end up on an Infamous Day in history.
This film has it all, action, well developed characters, an Incredible story that makes you feel pretty much every emotion there is.
But if the fact this has war in it puts you off, DON'T let it as this is no war film! This is a film about two people, rivalries, friendships, and their stories. War is just in the background of it all.
