Dances with Wolves (1990)
Dances With Wolves
If you consider this film awful then you can't say different from The Last Samurai (a film that borrowed the concept from this one), which in fact is in Tom Cruise's part self-indulgent. Although there's been a lot of bad rap about this film gaining awards people forget that this year (2004) a totally undeserving film was showered with Oscars, Lord of the Rings 3. Of course no one complains because it's an adventure fantasy epic containing lots of action (CGI) and pretentious drama. It's easy to hate a film like this one. What's not to hate for today's audience in a film that takes place in the old West with "indians" and a Union captain becoming friends with them. Westerns are not as popular as fantasy epics or even epics at all. By epics I don't mean grandeur quality films like Russian Ark, The Thin Red Line, Andrei Rublev, or The Seven Samurai, but mediocre ones such as Troy. This is a film that John Ford, Howard Hawks, David Lean, and maybe even Kurosawa (who was still alive at the time) would have loved.
