Luther: Never Too Much (2024)
MY 2024 SUNDANCE FILM FESTIVAL FAVORITE
My background is in production, plus as a University Archival Reference Librarian, I have high standards for documentaries. The research team on this film did a fantastic job showcasing Luther Vandross in Luther: Never Too Much (2024). The director did a linear timeline of Luther Vandross and Sony assisted in providing outstanding sound quality of the music videos and live concert performances. I felt everyone in the audience had a favorite Luther Vandross song, and at the time in the 1980's and 1990's a lot of interviews just cared about "Who are you dating?" and questions regarding his weight. When Luther was so much more. He was a vessel who helped others find love through his music. Love the interviews with Jamie Foxx on how much Luther Vandross's music helped him to win over the ladies, how Mariah Carey felt singing with Luther Vandross. And even how Dionne Warwick was blown away at a remake of one of her songs sung by Luther. I even learned about some songs I never knew about before. I can not wait for the world to see this movie. Luther truly had a gift of singing and struggled so much to not just be labeled on black radio stations, but on popular radio stations as well. It's a film where you will learn, laugh, and tear up with emotion if you listen to the words of this perfectionist's lyrics. I hope it's distributed soon!
On the Roam: Revival of the Rumble (2024)
Maggie Valley North Carolina Harley BIKERS!
The opening song is great and classic Metallica! There truly are nomads in this world and the beautiful human spirit that is Jason Momoa is one of them.. He is passionate about these bikes that have been around since WWI and it is great to see. The cinematography is such a great camera, that captures the scenery and beauty of North Carolina. The shots of the bikers together and getting to learn about the Harley Davidson vintage biker spirit, and how few and rare these bikes are, is really cool. (Although I don't know about their JAILBIRD CHAIN GANG PRISONER PANTS that look like they should be in Adam Sandler's remake of the Burt Reynolds movie, "The Longest Yard". HAHAHA! The ROAMERS shirts are so cool. What would make this better is the editing. The editor seems to not be paying attention. For example there is a contest where Jason Momoa states whoever wins this contest gets $5,000 to go to a charity of their choice! Well who won the contest? What charity did they choose. Little missing info like that, attention to detail like that, is what makes a great editor. If this gets a 2nd Season get a better editor.
On the Roam: The Phantom and the Electric Way (2024)
Antique Rolls Royce + Indian Bikes + Specialized E BIKES
As an archivist (reference librarian) at heart, I really was amazed in the MINT CONDITION of this Rolls Royce from the 1920's. It was cool to see the red leather inside of it and the intricate steering wheel, and the dashboard. On the one hand Jason Momoa appreciates how this automobile (Over 100 years old) in MINT condition looks. But forgets to show us the perspective inside the vehicle looking out at the TRIDENT holding FIGURE at the mast of the front of the hood. (Sorry I do not know the technical term for that). I love the guy who he visits that loves to craft the old school way, and shows Momoa the Indian Bikes. I love the craftsmanship of the newer SPECIALIZED bikes that were crafted in New Zealand. What would make this show better, is that it is EDITED in a more professional way. It seems to be chaotic. At first he is in the UK, then the US, then NZ. It was painful for me to see the mint Rolls Royce a part because I feel it should remain in tact. And this is MINOR because I really like the show, but Jason Momoa does not look good in a TINY Bowler hat, because he has a bigger head, but he does look great in the wider brim hats, and of course only he can pull off the color pink. You can tell Jason Momoa truly has a "wanderer" spirit, and a childlike curiosity about himself, and sees the joy in learning new things. I just want a BIG hug from the guy, and I am glad he is getting to make up for his poverty as a young youth by getting to be fortunate enough to buy what he always wanted.
George & Tammy (2022)
Michael Shannon was incredible in this Series
You can tell how much work Michael Shannon did for this role on becoming George Jones. The singing, the realistic alcoholism, and his passionate love for Tammy played by Jessica Chastain (Sp?). George saved Tammy from an abusive marriage and I would even compare their love and how they inspired each other musically to Johnny Cash and June Carter. While Michael Shannon always plays crazed characters, I really like him in dramas such as this story. If you like country music I would recommend this series for you. Michael Shannon was nominated for an Emmy in 2023 for this role as George Jones for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie, and I was disappointed he did not win. This George & Tammy series aired on Showtime in 2022 and 2023.
