Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018)
Ignore the negative "reviews"
The Untruth:
First of all, there are a lot of unfair reviews from people who are angry about other Star Wars movies. There are also some unfair reviews by bigots who simply can't stand anything that's not strictly heteronormative. These kinds of people have no business watching Star Wars anyway, so let's move on...
The Truth:
This was a fantastic movie. We now have good answers to a lot of Han and Chewy's past. Like Rogue One, it adds depth to birth of the rebellion, some of the main characters and even lives of the ever present Droids in Star Wars. It's action packed, fun, funny, exciting and sweeping without needing to be galactic in scope. It's moving without a single tear being shed. It's just good, it's really really good. Buy your ticket, sit down, hold on and prepare for a wild ride!
Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi (2017)
Don't read the Haters and Trolls reviews! The Last Jedi is AWESOME!!
I've seen every Star Wars movie during its opening week in the theaters. I was 7 years old when I saw the first one. I am huge fan of Star Wars and one point in the past my younger brain actually had all the dialogue from episodes IV, V and VI memorized. I could recite any of these movies on command. I have a betamax copy of the Star Wars Holiday Special and I can sing you "R2D2, we wish you a merry Christmas" and "What can you get a Wookie for Christmas?? (When he already owns a comb)" I have them on vinyl.
I am THAT kind of fan.
I explained all that so I can say this: The Last Jedi is the best Star Wars movie since Empire Strikes Back. Yes, it's better than Return of the Jedi.
Rian Johnson has dug us out of all the silliness that we were exposed to in episodes I, II and III. He also digs us out of all the "birthright" crap. You no longer have to be a Skywalker or the descendant of some great Jedi or Sith or have the right amount of "midichlorians" to use the force! And in the midst of all this freedom he also brings us a fantastically written and directed masterpiece that is never boring and advances the story beyond it's previous predictability.
No, It's not perfect. What ever is? I do have a few questions that I feel should have been answered in this installment: Who the hell was Snoke?!? How did he go unnoticed for so long without being detected. Why can't I get a Sith in a modern Star Wars movie? (Yes, I know we got Vader in Rogue One, it was awesome!)
But all this hate? Yeah, I've seen it all before. I heard the same crap when Empire and RotJ came out. A lot of "How can Luke be a Jedi after so little training??" and "How can Luke and Leia be siblings??" etc etc. And of course all the hate for the prequels. I even spit some of that venom myself...
In the end, it's Star Wars. The Last Jedi, when watched without some preconceived notion of entitlement to adherence to what came before, is amazing. If you can't manage that, you can join the crying former fans of Doctor Who who still cannot believe she's a woman now. Together you can boycott something you love.
You are what we grow beyond.
Star Trek: Discovery (2017)
Not bad, but not Trek...
**EDIT** I gave it two more stars for a greatly improved storyline, acting and direction in the latter half of the season. It still completely breaks continuity on the many levels mentioned below**
I really wanted to like this show. I really did. But after forcing myself to watch (and PAY for) four episodes I can honestly say that there is nothing redeeming about this boring, inconsistent, poorly acted mess. It's completely disloyal to the franchise. Initially I defended what we saw as a bump in technology. I realize that if this show happens in the Abrams timeline, then Starfleet may have gone into overdrive after the Narada destroyed the Kelvin. However, that does not account for the leaps forward that we see in this show.
The acting is rigid and not engaging. The Klingons behave like emotional Betazoids with a speech impediment and... they don't speak Klingon properly at all.
I won't beleaguer the review with obvious comparisons to better shows, but when a cartoonist gets Trek better than CBS/Paramount... it's time to sell the franchise to Disney before it's too late.
God Is Not Dead (2013)
A pandering and malignant failed attempt at propaganda
This movie in essence does nothing but harm to religion and the possibility of an all-powerful God. It also serves as an outright and intentional affront to Islam. The universe it takes place in is less believable than those seen in the Hunger Games, Divergent or the Chronicles of Narnia. From it's poor acting, storytelling and directing to it's weak scientific arguments this movie is just bad.
It plays like out of tune flat religious music that only sells because it mentions your favorite deity every few minutes.
The only way it offers any argument to the statement "God's not Dead" is by convincing you that Satan must surely exist in order for this film to have been made. As he most certainly took part in funding this little gem to help destroy Christianity. Although discreetly as I would imagine he has better taste than to attach his name to this dung heap of a film.
It gets Christians wrong.
It gets Muslims wrong.
It gets Atheists wrong.
It gets Chinese people wrong.
It gets black people (American and African) wrong.
It gets humanity so ridiculously and painfully wrong.
If you are looking for something to reaffirm your belief in God I recommend that you watch Showgirls or Joe Dirt. Either would surely make a stronger argument for the existence of God than "God is not Dead".
X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014)
Simply the best X-Men movie ever...
Brilliantly written, acted and directed. Simply put this movie was everything you'd want it to be and more. The cast, both older and more recent played their parts to the hilt. Cameos were done without seeming intentional or silly. The direction was top notch. Exactly what should have been in X3 and FC. The story was so well written that the time travel aspects that should have been a bit difficult to swallow seemed natural.
And... at long last, the continuity of the X-Men movie universe is whole once again. If I had one regret it's that they didn't find a place for Liev Schreiber to make an appearance in the future.
Wyatt Earp's Revenge (2012)
Tombstone Prequel gone wrong..
The direction and (with the exception of Mr Kilmer) the acting in this movie are so badly done it honestly felt like a fan fiction. While it was interesting and even entertaining to see Val Kilmer play Wyatt Earp, there is nothing else even remotely redeeming about this movie.
There were many places where the filmmakers tried desperately to pay homage to the 1993 movie Tombstone. Even going as far as having characters from both movies say similar lines and using Michael Sherayko, the actor who played Texas Jack Vermillion in Tombstone, in a small role. However, it fails miserably.
I would rank this one right up there with Showgirls, Highlander:The Source and Bloodrayne:Third Reich.
