Astonishing Tales of Terror: Rocktapussy! (2022)
If Hallmark made horror movies
I kid you not. This has a professional woman teaming up with a miner to defeat a monster that looks like a three eyed Cthulhu. It meshes with the classic sci fi exploitation schlock by clothing the heroine (said professional woman) in a bikini. It evokes Manga by including tentacles! But there is no snow and no Christmas tree in the deep Canadian mine which inexplicably includes a temple with a sacrificial stone upon which the heroine finds herself. Her miner friend is a bit of a ditz which I think is meant as a bone to be tossed to the feminists who might be watching. (I don't think any intelligent woman - - or man - - would buy this story.)
Season of the Witch (2011)
Nick Cage does not overact!
I think this film is underrated because so many of his fans prefer the manic Nicholas Cage who screams with no purpose. This is a Cage who has a mild temperance and sense of humor, who is more human and more humane. He has a gentle demeanor throughout the movie. I think it is good for an actor to receive different parts. He is companioned with Ron Perlman who brings his usual sardonic sense of humor to his role. They are accompanied by a motley crew: priest, a seller of relics who serves as their guide, a father who lost his entire family to the plague, an altar boy with impressive fighting skills, a alleged witch, and each other. Ignore most of the reviews. This film is watchable.
Extinction (2018)
War is messy
The movie is all over the place which is a pretty accurate representation of what it might be like if there is an alien invasion of earth. Ordinary Sci Fi fans might be disappointed that there are no lasers and no weird looking aliens. Or is it earth? And who are the invaders?
You'll be asking these questions as events develop. You will find that uncertainty is a major theme of the movie, the kind of uncertainty that drives critics mad. It is timely because it raises the whole issue of artificial intelligence. Are the invaders the human masterz trying to seize control back from the synthetics? The questions lie heavy as you watch and unravel the plot.
Atlantic Rim (2013)
Nuke it
The main characters are military types who can, of course, do no wrong. There is no depth in the characterization and the crises are predictable. I had hoped for a Pacific Rim sequel, but I got cheap Syfy.
