Babylon 5: In the Beginning (1998)
What a way to start it all
Although this movie came a long time after the series premiere, it was actually the first piece of B-5 I saw. It's a great movie on it's own, and a perfect way to start the whole series, because you get all the background info.
The movie revolves around the Earth-Minbari wars, a war erupting when a captain from an earth-warship reacts to a Minbari greeting in a hostile way, resulting in the death of several hundreds of thousands of Earthlings. And that's all you need to know, the rest will show itself when you watch the movie.
The action is great, special effect OK (they were never great, sad to say) and the acting first-class! So go see this movie, and then follow up with probably the second-best Sci-Fi series EVER (after Enterprise of course...:))
Enterprise (2001)
It just keep on getting better
Well, a fourth season is on it's way, and it feels like Christmas! =)
There has been some bashing of this series, which I as a faithful Star trek fan, find unfounded. As a series, it has improved upon itself time after time, and season three was quite amazing with a great twist at the end.
What differs this series from others in the trek-universe, is the way it appeals to other people other than the rabid trek-fans. A lot of friends to me that normally dislike theses series, has hooked on Enterprise, mainly because of the great characters (although Reed and Travis could get some more TV-time) and superb story lines. I remember a friend of mine's reaction the first time he saw the Borgs in season 2 (I think?), it was really fun to se a non-trek-fan reaction, and this show could very well be a good introduction for others to follow these great episodes.
Compared to TNG, STV, DS9 and TOS, I think this one stands out as original, compelling and fascinating, the way everything is more down-to-basic and the way they don't try to over do the techno stuff. DS9 was never a favourite of mine, Babylon is so far above that show, that it's scary. B-5 is also the only show I can come up with that actually challenges Enterprise, mainly because it's also so story driven, and has great characters.
Highly recommended!
