Dances with Wolves (1990)
Not to be missed!
Even after nearly 25 years (gulp), the movie still brings chills to my body and tears to my eyes. Everything about this movie is first rate. The only negative is it leaves a definite bitter taste in my mouth about all the BS we've been fed about native Americans and leaves us with a BIG question about other lies we've been fed over the years about our "enemies". (My review isn't long enough?? Why waste space when I've already expressed what I wanted to say. Why wast people's time? You should really re-consider your "minimum" review size.... there once was a fellow from Trent that traveled where ever his nose went. When he looked to the right, he had a terrible fright as he found out his pants....
Man of Steel (2013)
An action-packed film about "what's his name"?
It never ceases to frustrate me when stories or characters have "evolved" so much that there is little remaining from the original that endures anymore. The latest take is a far cry from the previous versions, and even the latest meaning of the "S" in Superman, would have Joe and Jerry shaking their heads. There was a noticeable lapse in any comedic relief as with all previous versions, including Superman Returns, which is probably why I felt so drained after this flick. In Superman Returns, Brandon Routh's portrayal was excellent and had much more depth than Henry Cavill, although Cavill was more muscular than any previous Super's (and reminded me of Gordon Scott in his Tarzan movies). I wasn't impressed with "Lois" in this offering. Although Amy Adams was OK, her character was very shallow and there was little effort given to knowing anything about here other than that she had the hots for what's his name (which was mentioned only in passing in this version). If wall to wall action (eg fighting, destruction, fighting, loud explosions, buildings falling, and fighting) is your thing, then you'll get your fill with The Man of Steel. However, if you want something more earthly, digestible, with more interaction and depth of characters, including the contrasts of the Clark/Superman characters, I'd consider passing on this one and re-watching Superman Returns.
Look, Up in the Sky! The Amazing Story of Superman (2006)
Story of Superman from day 1!
I found this to be an excellent documentary of the complete story from the beginning in the 1930's to the present. It covers the early comics, early cartoons, Superman, Superboy, Supergirl (although I wish she would have gotten more time...), Kirk Alyn, George Reeves, Gerard Christopher, and the whole gang. It had some great commentary from Noel Neil and Jack Larson. It also touched on the "mysterious" death of George Reeves. It, of course, had a good bit on Christopher Reeve with some of the auditions of other actors. It even had segments on The Return of Superman and an interview with Brandon Routh. I can't imagine any collection not having this DVD to go along with the other materials that are now available. For a novice as well as someone who has "flown" with a towel as well as in their dreams, this disc will be a treasure to view over and over!
Somewhere in Time (1980)
Great story, great atmosphere. Great date movie!
I don't know why some people felt this film was poor. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I suppose it helps to be a hopeless romantic. The movie starts with an old woman who gives Chris Reeves a watch and mumbles, "Come back to me". Some years later, while on a much needed "R&R" he is drawn to a picture of a beautiful woman he finds in an old hotel. Much later you put two and two together and realize it's the same woman when she was much younger. He is mysteriously and uncontrollably drawn to learn more about this woman and goes on a quest to learn how to visit her "back in time". Eventually, he connects. It's a beautiful story filled with some of Chris Reeve's best acting, which showcases his remarkable charm and wit. I didn't really appreciate the ending until I saw it several times. The chemistry is remarkable and the period dress, the feel of the movie and the story was something you'll remember for a long time. I still hear the music score in my head and I haven't seen the movie in over 10 years...
Superman (1973)
Superman
Part of this movie was from the Adventures of Superman TV series from 1957. The episode which Joi appeared as Superman's wife was titled "Superman's Wife". She did an excellent job and brought an unusual amount of sexuality to the scenes. If the edited version was not put together properly, as another Superman movie--"The Mole People", which was a compilation, it does not take away from the fun and excitement of Superman as we remember. All of these weekly episodes were written to stand alone. When mixed together, they may have a different feel and ending. We have to remember how lucky we are to be able to re-live the fun of watching these shows again after all these years. It is unfortunate that Joi died from breast cancer at such a young age. But watching her even in a mediocre movie is fun!
