Tooth Fairy (2010)
Great family movie! (Possible spoilers, or perhaps I'm being very careful!)
This movie was well worth the money we spent to watch it! Will this movie win any Oscars? Nope, but if you were looking for an Oscar worthy movie and went to see this then the problem is not with the film, but with you.
I think the acting was perfect for a movie that was to be both funny and a warm fuzzy for families. Billy Crystal was very funny and it reminded me just how much I miss his humor. It was surprising to see Seth Macfarlane in a real family movie, but he was quite funny and believable in his role.
I really enjoy watching Judge Judy, so I giggled quite a bit as Julie Andrews take on her role was quite similar to Judge Judy. (ie, when she was giving Derrick a hard time for interrupting her.) We saw this as a family, laughed as a family, and talked about the real point of the movie as a family. I can't imagine anyone involved in the making of this movie who isn't proud. They should be as they completely hit the mark! I would love to see many more movies like this for our family to see.
Nestor, the Long-Eared Christmas Donkey (1977)
Available on DVD (Secondary to "A Year Without a Santa Claus")
For those of you who have never seen this show, please try to find it on DVD. I bought my favorite Rankin/Bass Christmas shows on DVD this year. I was very pleasantly surprised to find this favorite from my childhood on the same DVD as "A Year Without a Santa Claus" (another real fave of mine).
Sure, there are some sappy moments in Nestor, but the story is very touching and heart-warming. I wish there were more Christmas shows on television brave enough to acknowledge the birth of our lord and savior Jesus Christ as the reason for the season.
And a short response to another poster about the blizzards in Rome... the beginning of the story sets it in Europe during the Roman rule and occupation... the cherub then guides Nestor over a long period of time to a stable closer to Bethlehem. As a child I never picked up on Nestor having to wait for a while to go to Bethlehem, but seeing it as an adult it touched me that we all at times have to wait for our opportunity to serve in some way and it might not come when we want it to, but when our Father does. But I digress.... a great Christmas treat!
New Zoo Revue (1972)
New Zoo Revue and oatmeal... how I started each day as a child.
I just purchased the 6-DVD Season One of New Zoo Revue and I am thrilled! New Zoo Revue and oatmeal were how I started each day as a child. We weren't glued to the television the way kids are today, but we were allowed to watch NZR each morning before school. My parents dressed like Doug and Emmy Jo... shoot my dad even resembled Doug.
While I've read things all over the internet bashing NZR, I love it! Not just for the nostalgia, but for the positive, uplifting messages it gave me (and continues to give as it's still played in different markets across the USA). I learned how to be polite and a good friend. I learned about the seasons and how to think. I learned so much from NZR that has helped shape the person I am today.
I've already watched two of the six DVDs (containing 59 episodes). My two-year old nephew came into the room and stood there thrilled at the music and life-sized animals. I don't have a problem with him watching this show... unlike other shows with large talking/singing animals (Barney, HR PufNStuff, etc.).
I highly recommend this show for anyone who enjoyed it as a kid, missed it as a kid or who knows a kid.
