Gunpowder Milkshake (2021)
Not nearly as bad as these reviewers are pretending it is
Funny. Sharp. The only weak link in the cast is Karen Gillan and her wooden performance which could potentially be blamed on a script riddled with clunky dialogue. I wish the bad guys were a bit more menacing and I'd love to know more about the librarians but this was fun! The first action sequence at the bowling alley is lazy and awkwardly choreographed and edited but the scene where a paralyzed Gillan has a scalpel and gun taped to her hands was truly wonderful and one of the most fun action sequences I've watched in ages.
My one last thorn is the cheesy generic score. It sounds like a student film and not professional or fun at all but to end this, Lena Headey's the film's rose overall. She steals every scene with her radiating charisma and charm.
Watchmen (2019)
Anyone saying that this isn't Watchmen never read Watchmen
Watchmen at its heart as a graphic novel and now a TV show isn't about deconstructing the myth of the superhero. It's about us. It's a very dark, realistic take on our country and our people with superheroes as the cherry on top.
This show demonstrates that beautifully. While the comic was about the fear and anxiety of the 80's, this show is about today. The writing is clever. The subtle ways the writers managed to continue from where the comic left off (just a few decades later) is very well done. The way the show mocks many of the folks here who are complaining about the show being "too political" (as if the graphic novel wasn't) by having their beloved Rorschach be the face of a white supremacist movement is sharp. If you saw him as the hero the first time around, Moore's comic and its themes went right over your head. I love how this show points that out.
Regina King is a force to be reckoned with. This show is exactly what a true fan would want and anyone who thinks otherwise needs to revisit the source material.
Phoenix Forgotten (2017)
Way better than most reviews would suggest
The acting was natural. The story is interesting (the three kids going missing aside, it's based on a true story. The Phoenix Lights really did happen and are well documented) and up until some special effects at the end, pretty convincing.
I think this is one of very few found-footage films that felt like a "real" documentary to me. If I didn't know better, I'd believe that it was truly filmed in the late 90's.
It's a pretty fun film if you've got the free time. It's no masterpiece but it's good!
We Need to Talk About Kevin (2011)
Haunting
Visually, the film is stunning. Colors, sets, images are all used to tell so much without having to spell the rest out for you.
You feel like you're in a never ending nightmare which is exactly how Tilda Swinton's Eva feels every single day since the tragedy involving her son took place.
All of the acting is top notch but this film belongs to Swinton. Post-partam depression is tricky. Nobody seems to want to discuss it and mothers who experience it are often shamed and lead to believe that they're not cut out for motherhood. Eva assumed that those feelings would go away once her son was actually born but instead she had...well, Kevin.
I highly recommend this film. It's emotionally quite brutal but surprisingly leaves quite a bit of violence up to your imagination if gore isn't your thing.
Truth and Lies: Waco (2018)
Left out quite a lot
I'm no conspiracy theorist but there's a LOT missing from this documentary. Known facts were completely dismissed in order to promote a narrative that essentially called the murder of children justified.
A lot that both sides have since agreed on they just completely leave out. Also, having Alex Jones as the only person interviewed who's against the government's version of events is just beyond irresponsible and makes it seem like there's no credibility to people who aren't pleased with how this was handled.
I expected a much less biased program that only stuck with the facts and didn't swing one way or the other.
