Bãhubali: The Beginning (2015)
Bahubali is a 100 out of 10 movie!!
This is the first movie out of India where the makers have taken cinematic experience to another level. They have indulge in constructing out of the world scenes, which are visual treats. This is the first time an Indian movie has transcended across language barriers, made us believe in our common lineage. An original story - created reverence for its characters through its narrative. An age where women were as powerful as men, considered equal in tact of wars and politics as well. We need such movies to change thinking of society which is embedded in crooning over useless love stories and badly acted films of so called superstars. We need to remember our culture for good and the cinema industry need to demonstrate such brilliance more often.
English Vinglish (2012)
Triumph of the housewife!
This movie was very much needed for this fast generation of changing India! Due to globalization and absence of a country-wide 'regional' language, most of the businesses today demands efficient use of English - a global language. Naturally, respect for the language that helps earn money with comfort prompts ugly neglect of other regional languages. Schools encourage kids to learn English, keeping it as a mandate. It glorifies this language in minds of children vis-à-vis other regional languages. They think that they conform to a special status when they know English well. Rather, its a frown - a discomfort to converse in regional language when you know what the world speaks. This nonchalance creeps into every urban household. Slowly it gives birth to a false shame when somebody jumps in with the regional sentence when all are busy interacting in business language. This film is a story of people who are home makers, or local business persons. People who are not concerned about foreign land, their taste, their language and their lifestyle. All they hope to achieve is security for their loved ones and happiness in small achievements. In this film – the protagonist is a lady who manages her husband's needs, her children's wants and the society's obligations. In their busy schedule, her loved ones fail to understand her sacrifices. They feel terrible at her efforts to try English. Many women watch their children study in English medium schools and converse in English at home. They also desire to come up to their standards, but it remains a distant dream. Their household work keeps them busy. Husband doesn't realize that things do change at home when he is busy attending a meeting. Children too – busy in learning lessons; tend to ignore their mom's efforts in getting everything ready on time. The result is – as depicted – gross negligence. Nobody cares about the lady's feelings; she is taken for granted. She suffers humiliation for her incapability to converse in same manner that her loved ones speak to their friends, colleagues and acquaintances. This breeds a sense of guilt. At the first opportunity, the lady decides to quash her fears and learn English. And experience follows
Gangs of Wasseypur (2012)
An Oscar Class movie!
I have watched some of the legendary movies from Hollywood and the elements which makes them legendary is what I find with Gangs of Wasseypur.
It is : 1. The honesty in depiction of a story with suitable characters and adherence to the plot. 2. Not succumbing to the temptation of attracting large family audience to earn more money. 3. Showing what is exact, without any cosmetic changes.
Anurag Kashyap had to include some necessary 'entertaining' moments to hold the audience, but it didn't look a deliberate attempt and indeed mingled well with the plot.
GoW talks about a revengeful attitude that percolates to many generations. There are villages in India where this attitude stays for decades as the political struggle for domination over masses continues aided by weak law and order situations.
Bol Bachchan (2012)
Kudos to Abhishek Bachchan!
Bol Bachchan is a typical Rohit Shetty movie with a little more substance. It has cheap jokes - this time on lousy understanding of English by Prithviraj - character played by Ajay. It has those characteristic action sequences - people and vehicles flying in the air. It has few songs, which are light and melodious.
But this film should be remembered for an actor who has worked out of his skin to entertain audience - Abhishek Bachchan. I have never seen Abhishek show so many emotions in a single film. He is good at comic roles - if we see Dostana and now Bol Bachchan. Action sequences and sharing chemistry with females is where I find him a little uncomfortable. He should not be compared to his dad now. He has carved an audience for himself.
