Breaking In (2018)
3/10 Pretty Terrible Movie
Ok this movie was pretty bad, the one character I kind of liked does not have a happy ending. At minimum down a few drinks and bring a friend before starting if you're thinking about watching this.

4/10 Very generic and average sci-fi movie
This is the type of movie a high-schooler aspiring to be a film producer would make in his spare time on a low budget. Ask a friend with a big house and the nerd friend whizkid to do some editing. It's pretty bland and lacks substance. But it's not terrible. Not the type of movie you show to hype up a crowd or even enjoy alone, if I'm being honest. There's a very niche mood you have to be in, one where you want to watch an emotionless sci-fi movie with a single interesting idea. It happens. I was gonna give it a 5 but I saw some of my other 5s and it was honestly less enjoyable, so 4/10.

Pretty fun Disney Movie - Suitable for kids, passable for adults
I feel like it's kinda inappropriate for me to be rating Disney movies as a 23 year old haha, but these movies are meant to have a bit of something for everyone.
Anyway, as far as Disney and animated movies go, this was ok. The animation looked really nice, I liked the protagonist and Maui, music was pretty enjoyable to listen to (The Rock's song was my favorite, crab guy a close second). It did have some deeper and timeless themes, but it only slightly touched on them. The lack of depth and rather bare and inconsequential story is why I'm giving this only a 6 instead of something higher (for example I think The Croods did a much better job tackling tradition vs the future and exploring a new world. It was also much funnier).
So as far as adults and animated movies go, this isn't one of the best and it doesn't offer much, although it is still enjoyable. I'm sure the kids will love it, so definitely set an evening aside and watch it with them if you have any!
6/10
Pros:
-Likeable characters
-New take on accompanying animal/entity
-Nice animation
-Nice music
Cons:
-Superficial - deeper themes only briefly touched upon
-No real compelling villain or enemy
The Hateful Eight (2015)
Fantastic Characters and Writing, NOT an Action Flick
Ok real talk, anybody giving this movie anything under a 5 is absolutely tripping balls, the kind of person who only watches Fast and Furious and Triple X, and thinks that movies like The Purge and 50 Shades of Grey are classics and standards for storytelling. How can this movie be under average, even when judged purely by "was I entertained or not?" Movies like The Room are rated 3-4, and yet this high quality film is getting 1-3 stars. WTF.
As for my 10/10, I understand that raises skepticism, but what it comes down to for me, like all of you, is whether I was highly entertained or not, and for me to be entertained I need great dialogue and great characters. And this movie has fantastic characters and fantastic dialogues. And every moment throughout this movie I was captivated and wanted to know what was going to happen next. AND, it is NOT predictable. This movie navigates the complex space of 8+ characters whose fates have overlapped in a small outpost during a blizzard, and as the story unfolds so do, in parallel, the complex personalities and relationships these characters have with each other. For some pasts are intertwined, for others the future, and for everyone the present. Not one of these characters is good or bad, they are just people with their own motives, life experiences and understandings.
I think that those people saying that there are strong political undertones in this movie, they are just projecting and it's something they've carried with themselves into this viewing experience. I did not even think there was anything like that until I read some reviews on here. All I saw a story told in a snapshot of time.
Highly recommend this movie -- reserve an evening, put your phones and distractions away, turn the lights and noises off, and hit the play button.
Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018)
Good - Better than Last Jedi - Anyone giving under 5-6 hasn't seen it, or is hating
Look, I get it. The Last Jedi really screwed up a lot of things, and fans have to take action to try and restore balance to the force and everything else. But it's a shame that Solo: A Star Wars Story has to take the backlash, because this is actually a pretty good movie. And they did a lot of things right which should carry on to future movies. So I hope that Disney doesn't think that this movie performed poorly because it's a particularly bad movie, but it performed poorly because of what came before it: The Last Jedi; bad writing; self-righteousness and scapegoating by the franchise's writers, and so on. I would say this is about a 7/10, but I'm giving an 8 to slightly offset unreasonable haters who are treating this movie unfairly. It's a tough spot, just how it is.
As for the movie itself, it becomes better and better as the movie goes on. First 10 minutes are a bit jarring and cringey as you acclimate to the new Han Solo, but you eventually grow to like him. Things accelerate as the action kicks in and characters are introduced, and we've got some gorgeous-looking sequences and great-looking people. There is a dip in parallel when a particular droid is introduced (just try to ignore, and enjoy all the other good stuff that's happening). Lando is pretty good, but could have been better. As the end approaches, there are a couple of twists, and there is no telling who will live or die (side characters obviously, who I must say are actually pretty likable), so this movie had tension and it was not that predictable.
I walked into this movie hearing about all the hate, expecting a bad movie. But I was pleasantly surprised, and enjoyed it. And unless you are an illogical, irrational, blinded person, you will find yourself enjoying it too.
I think Disney got the message with the bad opening weekend. Go and see this movie, support the cast and movie. Or wait till it's theater run is finished and buy the blu-ray. Either way, this isn't a movie you should avoid forever.
Gotham: A Dark Knight: The Sinking Ship the Grand Applause (2018)
Great Episode
Great episode! Every now and then a great Gotham episode comes on, and I just have to go and let people know! Great stuff from everyone - Bruce, Gordon, Bullock, Penguin, Nygma, Barbara, Butch, Sophia, Zasz, and many more. Great relationship dynamics between these characters we love, alliances that come from times of need, tough choices, big outcomes. I am keeping this all very vague on purpose, go see for yourself! Next time, TAKE THE DEAL!
~9/10 had an awesome time
Altered Carbon (2018)
It's like someone dipped me into a cool pool and gave me time to think.
This is a great show. And it's a fantastic sci-fi cyberpunk dystopian neo-noir show too. About me for context -- I've never read or heard about the book this is based on. I do love science fiction, I loved Blade Runner and all that. I love good shows.
High level -- I had other plans this weekend but I ditched them for this show. It has a great atmosphere and explores many ideas: life/death, consciousness, technology, religion and politics, rich and poor, family, identity...even as I write this list more are coming to me. The thing is, the series doesn't MAKE you think. It HAS you think, "holy expletive, I never even thought about that. That's awesome, and maybe frightening too. Is that possible?" and so on. It's not a task to think here, it's a joy. I can't quite express why, but this show just felt fresh, hence the cool pool title. I was on a hiatus from TV shows because they seemed dull, none really matched up to the giants like GoT. But I watched the first episode chilling with a friend and was instantly hooked (he already finished it, before me). And I kept watching and watching. Watch this show right away.
A few more things:
Action: This is a sci-fi show, but it has a lot of action. Main character is a bamf
Casting: Great, diverse, and meta casting. Because of some realities of the world in this show, casting is very interesting, especially for future seasons.
Setting: Beautiful dystopian futuristic world
Why this isn't a 10/10, in order of importance:
Few episodes in the middle lagged. Beginning and end were amazing though.
Sound track not really that memorable. Disappointing because movies like Blade Runner were so memorable with their music and it had a large effect on the content itself. And finally, almost trivially, sometimes it's hard to know what's happening because certain terms are very quickly introduced.

Gotham: A Dark Knight: Let Them Eat Pie (2017)
9 for Sofiya's dress
And otherwise good TV stuff. Well dam it looks like I need 5 lines of text. Great acting by Ppyg, Bruce is hate-able so I'm looking for a redemptive redemption arc, Alfred my man gets emotionally low-balled, suggestive lines muttered under breath, and a great fight scene. Oh, and the third highlight of the episode was the dinner scene. Great! Great dynamics between Martin and Penguin. I really want to know the truth behind Martin, PPyg, Sofiya...who is pulling the strings.
Baby Driver (2017)
Technically high-quality movie, but not very memorable. Verdict: Over-hyped
When I saw the trailer for this movie, I thought "Meh, looks kinda dull." But then I saw that Edgar directed this movie - I LOVE HOT FUZZ - and I became very excited about it, and this excitement was amplified by the early ratings in the 8.5-8.6 range. But when I saw it, I was unfortunately disappointed. There aren't too many memorable things about this movie, and it's predictable. It's moderately funny, and the chase scenes aren't as astonishingly mind-blowing as I was led to believe. The characters are decent and the story is OK, which puts it at a 5/10, but the editing is a tier above average so I'll give it a 6/10. I think the 10/10s are coming from car buffs who never watch actual 10/10 movies, or from people who like purely "realistic," typical action movies. I would really have liked to see something new and unpredictable, or to have some absurd humor or something, but it just wasn't there. This movie is a 7/10 MAX, although I still recommend you see it in theaters if you have nothing else to do. Personally I would not watch this again, and I am still debating whether the $10.50 was worth it.
Ghost in the Shell (2017)
A movie worth seeing, disregard the purists and social combatants
OK a few things. SJWs: Thank you for fighting the good fight, but ScarJo looks like Major in the movie, and they very explicitly nod to her origin at some point in the film. Plus there are plenty of diverse characters throughout the movie.
Purists: I watched GITS two days before seeing this, and you should chill. First of all, GITS isn't even that amazing (it's great but I need you to settle down), and that's coming from a sci-fi fan who loves cyberpunk and Transhumanism and all that and whose favorite movie is probably AKIRA. So stop docking points from this movie when it's fairly faithful to the original while meeting mainstream expectations. You should really learn to meet producers halfway if you want animated movies to become mainstream and eventually masterpieces. Support the movie.
Everyone else: Watching this movie solely for the visuals is worth the price, especially if a sci-fi tech world appeals to you. In that case don't miss it. On top of that, the characters are likable and the plot is more than sufficiently good. The dialogue is fine, not a masterpiece but not cheesy (maybe 2 instances I thought were trash). Although the philosophy is tweaked down, there are still many questions that arise through the dialogue and the characters. The movie itself is a visual exploration of what it is to fuse humans and tech, you will see a lot of whirling trinkets and gadgets. There is one visual failure in my opinion in the beginning, kinda looks like garbage.
So I apologize for the disjointed "review" and for throwing some shade I was compelled to post out of salt. It's more of an intervention and a reassurance that this movie is enjoyable than a true review. This movie I say is 7/10 but I will give it an 8/10 to balance out the haters because I hate seeing short-sighted elitist weebs stifle progress just so they can stroke their own ego.
