The Shift (II) (2023)

Finally, some new ideas!
4 December 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This movie is good. It's not a sequel, a prequel, a reboot, or a part of some cinematic universe. It's an original movie based on a chapter from the best selling book of all time. It's about time movie studios took the hint and began developing new content too and this movie comes along at just the right time for that. The story is compelling, deep and has profound meaning. The classic struggle between good and evil is woven throughout. The hope of the protagonist and other characters even when it appears that all hope is lost is a great message. As others have said, it really will get you to think about what is really important in life - is it material comfort or is it helping others using your God given gifts to make other's lives easier? Please see this movie, it will move you.

What the flip did I just watch?
25 March 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Are all critics just paid shills? I am convinced they are. The trailer made this movie look exciting and I was eager to watch it once it came out. When I was actually sitting through it however, all of that excitement quickly wore off. This movie is soooo confusing you can't follow along - first you're here in this time frame then you're here in another one, then you're back here..I was like what the hell am I watching?? It's difficult to describe what they were thinking when they put this disaster together. Best I can come up with is three different short films - slow, medium and fast paced all in one but run through a blender, shredded and then cobbled together with duct tape.

There is something to be said for linear storytelling that this movie and the director just miss completely. Since most people can't handle honesty, you'll probably see a lot of unhelpful votes from people who never even watched this movie but are paid to downvote honest reviews. This review is not for them, it's for you. This movie is a master class in how not to shoot, edit, cut and market a movie. They got my money, don't let them get yours. Borrow the movie from an unlucky friend and then see if you agree with me.

No really, it's not a good movie

Warning: Spoilers
SPOILERS AHEAD

Could you cram a few more callbacks in here Disney? I wanted to like this movie, I really did. It was just too predictable. There was no continuity. No time to reflect. Way way waaaaaaaaay too much deus ex machina. There is no way any of the heroes should be alive at the end. They used other character deaths at the wrong place at the wrong time. The plot twists were stupid and not believable. There is no way in ANY universe Hux is a spy! There is no way the Emperor is still alive!

The entire plot is a series of contrived, lazy writing and no imagination whatsoever.

The final scene of Kylo's sacrifice for Rey was as predictable as it gets.

It's as if the writers were saying, "We really don't need a story, just put whatever up there and let's kill this thing for ever..."

You're lazy Disney. This movie could have been way better. There is also active Captain Marvel type opinion suppression going on here as this movie is not good but there seems to be some snowflakes that can't deal with it.

Terrible lead actress choice
5 December 2019
Warning: Spoilers
It's too bad that this movie was ruined by the terrible lead actress choice for Belle. They could have picked someone, ANYONE that would have given the role more life. Ms. Watson's performance was limp and lifeless and the exact opposite of the and bounce of the animated version. It's sad really because I really wanted to like it but it's unwatchable. Maybe they could have hired one of the unknowns from the Walt Disney World stage show instead....they would have been much better.

Passengers (I) (2016)

Your life is empty, it's probably why you critique movies professionally...
12 December 2018
Don't listen to professional movie critics. About anything. Ever. Go and see the movie for yourself and make your own decision. In this age of information that we're in, the truth is going to get out eventually. The days where professional movie critics (most likely paid shills) can make or break a film are over.

Such is the case with Passengers. This is a very cool story. It's got everything you could ask for in a movie: action, romance, thrills, mystery, excitement and it grabs you by the spacesuit tether, shakes you up and makes you ask yourself, "What would I do?"

Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence portray two characters that you really care about. I was immediately drawn to their plight and ended up rooting for them the whole time.

Do yourself a favor: rent, buy or borrow a copy of this movie and watch it.

You'll be glad you did.

Mars May Need Moms, but Disney needs better storytellers...
14 March 2011
Warning: Spoilers
All I can say is ugh! What has happened to Disney? There have been some bad movie ideas from Disney before (just watch Bolt or Hunchback if you don't believe me) but this movie is BAD. I don't expect a Main Street parade at Walt Disney World for this one any time soon.

The trailer alone should have kept me away from the theater but sometimes you just have to take one for the team...

I should have stayed away -- and I think Disney should have stuck with what they do best which are fairy tale fantasy stories such as Tangled or Toy Story and leave the Sci-Fi story telling to people who will actually make an interesting story.

Rent and watch Planet 51 and save your money.

Try again Disney (and hire better marketing folks and writers before you do).

Good Entertainment - Not a blockbuster.
22 November 2008
Warning: Spoilers
As far as Disney titles go - this movie hits the mark with regard to pure entertainment value. The story moves along quickly and it was enough to keep my 4 year old's attention throughout. Parents should also find a few on screen gags that will keep them immersed in the film. Throw in a few explosions and some mild peril and it's also a winning combination for older kids too. The effects are good but not ground breaking - such as the slow motion "Matrix" type effects which have been overdone in so many movies nowadays. The animation itself is nothing new - same old same old as far as shape, texture and quality. Another area where I think it falters a bit is in the predictability of the story line. If you watch the trailer before going in to see this movie, you will be able to predict basically what will happen at the end. This is after all a Disney movie so to even imagine a less-than-happy ending is impossible. I would recommend this movie to others as a solid Disney adventure movie - a good way to pass an afternoon. Is it a "must see"? Well, I saw it on it's opening weekend where the theater I went to (In a huge well populated mall on a Saturday afternoon) was about half full rather than being packed like I imagined it would have been for a Disney flick released right before Christmas.

Random Hearts (1999)

Who writes this stuff??? Ick!
10 May 2006
Warning: Spoilers
Okay. I like Harrison Ford - it's the only reason I actually sat through this movie from beginning to end. However, I have a big problem with any movie I'm watching during which I can guess what's going to happen next before it plays out on the screen. That's what happened at every turn and every plot twist of Random Hearts - right up until the end. The storyline was not very clever and completely predictable throughout. The ending is a COMPLETE PIECE OF CRAP! Did they even screen test the movie before they released it?!?! The ending has Ford's character meeting Thomas' character at the airport and after all the romance, all the crying, all the hurt, and all the sex that they've been through - they part with a "Maybe I'll see you again" ?!?!?! No wonder Harrison Ford won't work with Sydney Pollack ever again! A better ending would have had Ford in Thomas' driveway with a dozen long-stemmed red roses and saying something quippy like "You said you wanted to give me your boat, how about we sail around the world for the rest of our lives" and she could say "How about we start with a Stoli on the rocks and we go from there?".

There. I just wrote an ending 6 BILLION TIMES BETTER THAN WHAT WAS SHOT....you're welcome.

More of a political statement than a movie
23 December 2005
Warning: Spoilers
Can't liberals like Alec Baldwin get it through their heads that they lost the elections of 2000 and 2004? The ridiculous. lame swipes at WalMart, non-union workers, George W Bush and the stock market not to mention the intentional GWB accent that Balwin's character uses in the film just makes him look silly and bitter on screen. As the credits roll the sour grapes continue as "Special Thanks" are given to Ken Lay, and other CEOs from Enron, Tyco, WorldCom, and IMClone. Let me clue you in to something - if you put all your money into one company's stock YOU'RE AN IDIOT. We don't need this excuse for a movie to tell us that. What a waste of Jim Carrey's talent - from the trailer I expected a completely different movie - what I got was a 90 minute DNC commercial on how to scare people into not investing for their own future, keep them stupid, and keep them dependent on government. No wonder Hollywood is in trouble and can't make a decent movie anymore - maybe you guys could get an original idea and put it on screen for once...although I shouldn't be surprised since Jane Fonda was cast in the original.

Kronk's New Groove (2005 Video)
7/10
Fun movie, very entertaining - story could have been better...
16 December 2005
Warning: Spoilers
I was really excited when I saw the commercials for this direct to Disney DVD movie. Because I loved Emperor's New Groove so much, I had to go out and get this one. As with all sequels of a well crafted original story - Kronk had my expectations set to a very high level.

It's hard to judge this movie without comparing it to the original and that's why I don't think it's possible to write a fair review about it. First of all, it did hold my attention the whole way through - the story moved right along and didn't seem to drag at all. Funny at several different points and rehashing some of the jokes from the first movie but not doing it to the point that it becomes irritating.

It starts out in a similar style to the original, a day in Kronks life where everything seems to have blown up in Kronk's world and has spun out of control. Then we watch the events that have already unfolded leading us back to the point in the opening scene in the movie.

There were some parts in it that were extremely entertaining and basically made the movie for me. One of these is the music "video" in the middle of the movie between Kronk and his love interest Birdwell. It was so funny - I laughed out loud. It's set to the song "Let's Groove" by Earth Wind and Fire and features musical sight gags from Ghost, Pulp Fiction, Titanic, the Micheal Jackson "Thriller" video, and Saturday Night Fever to name a few. A well done sequence in my opinion.

There were other elements of the story that could have used more attention from the directors. First off, Kuzco, Pacha and Yzma were shoehorned into the story. Granted the story is told from Kronk's perspective but the major characters from the first movie have basically bit parts in this one. Because of this, Kronk basically "goes it alone" getting himself into the mess he's in and having only himself (and his shoulder angel and devil - basically himself too) to get him out of it.

The main theme of it all is that Kronk's happiness hinges on his father's approval. At the end of the film Kronk realizes that he's not a failure because he has friends (straight out of It's a Wonderful Life) but it's not complete happiness until his Papi gives him the "thumbs up" - is that a good message or a bad message for kids? I'll let you come to your own conclusion on that one.

All in all, it was time well spent getting to visit with Kronk and his pals again but it's a sequel and it's strong enough to stand on it's own only as a sequel. If it was an original film with no back-story to fall back on, it would be a weaker attempt at entertainment. 7/10 stars

Steve Martin fans will enjoy this one...
10 November 2005
Warning: Spoilers
Saw this several years ago when I was in high school. I liked it and still do to this day. Lonely guys everywhere can identify with Martin and Grodin's characters - of course they take it to the extreme - but the basic premise holds enough grain of truth to it to make the movie enjoyable.

The best lines in the movie are the greeting card lines that Martin comes up with just before getting fired from the greeting card company he is working for. In fact, I've used the following on an ex-girlfriend to help me feel just a bit better after a breakup :) "Will you be my valentine? Think about it a bit. If you will, that's okay. If not, who gives a sh**." Another gem is when Martin has the discussion about poop with a cop trying to give him a ticket for his dog fouling a pathway. Classic.

This is not "The Jerk", "Planes, Trains & Automobiles" or even "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels" by any stretch of the imagination but it is a good way for a Steve Martin fan to pass the time on a rainy day.

Good movie when I didn't know what a good movie was...
15 February 2005
Warning: Spoilers
I cast my mind back to my youth in the late 70's when it comes to this movie. I remember when "The Movie Channel" was the only game in town and this movie was in the monthly rotation. I also recall my brother and I, killing ourselves laughing at the one liners - not even realizing that the actors' voices were dubbed. The fight scenes in it were action packed (reminded me of the OOF! and BAM! of a good Batman episode) and the plot had enough in it to keep a 9 and 12 year old glued to the TV with rapt attention. We watched it so many times busting a gut laughing and quoted the same funny lines from it when it wasn't on....

That having been said, it is a bad movie, bad enough not to buy or rent, but if it ever showed up on TV again (probably would have to be the 3am "Insomniac Theatre" or something similar) I would have to tune in for just a moment....just to cast myself back to a simpler time...

Most of the comments in this forum are subjective things anyway and my review of this movie is no different - I wouldn't recommend this film to anyone - if it was made today it would receive a scathing review as unimaginative and goofy - but from a 9 year old's perspective, it was the most hilarious and entertaining thing a kid and his brother ever saw in their lives.....you had to be there to understand it...

Iron Eagle II (1988)
1/10
I would have rather had a root canal....
15 February 2005
Warning: Spoilers
Yes, the first Iron Eagle movie was predictable, totally 80's and far-fetched...BUT it was entertaining and fun to watch. I guess the producers of this movie figured they could write a movie with airplanes in it, name it Iron Eagle and it would be another sleeper hit. Those idiots could not have been more wrong.

I was excited when I heard about this movie and eagerly tuned in to watch when lo and behold you see the hero from the first Iron Eagle, Jason Gedrick, get KILLED in the first 5 minutes! Then you think, well maybe he's still alive, after all, in the first movie you thought Lou Gossett Jr's character was killed and yet he turns up alive and well at the end! Alas, the very next scene after you see Gedrick's plane explode, they cut to a military guy saying "No, the kid's dead and buried..." thus removing all doubt that the entire rest of the picture will be without him. I sat stunned for the next 10 minutes, mouth agape, missing several key plot points while I sat there thinking to myself, "They really killed him? That's it? You mean they really KILLED HIM?!?". Then that's when I started getting upset and hating this movie and everything about it....that clinched it....

This movie continues to be the only movie I have ever walked out on...I watched up to the point where his fly buddy that is up there when he gets killed sits down with the Russians to plan the attack to take place later in the film and then I couldn't take it anymore...I never saw what happens next, nor do I ever care to find out.....

The reason Gedrick didn't make this movie is because he was busy making the Oscar-winning movie "Rooftops" (note HUGE amount of sarcasm here)at the time it was made. Maybe if Gedrick actually starred in this movie all the way through instead of being deleted from it, it could of had a slight chance of being a halfway decent film.

Damn you, stupid producers of this movie, for making such vile filth -- if I could exact an equally torturous punishment upon you it would be having you watch the Spanish language version of "Rooftops" with French subtitles in it's entirety six times back to back without a break.......

Disjointed and dark...a bit of a mystery
25 October 2004
What started out as an interesting movie idea to me became a struggle to watch until its completion. Kate Winslet plays kind of a freaky girl - quite a departure from what you're used to if you saw her in Titanic or Sense and Sensibility. Jim Carrey plays a very dark depressed and sad individual - even sadder than the role he played in Cable Guy. The movie is hard to follow, starting out at what you think is the beginning, only to be shifted and twisted down a disjointed and confusing path. You really don't get the feeling that the two main characters have any chemistry between them at all. In order to enjoy a movie, you really have to care about the main characters and what happens to them. Carrey's character comes off as desperate and sad and Kate Winslet's character comes off like a crazy witch with a capital B - I started not to care whether they got back together or not within minutes of watching. Suffice it to say, this is a good movie if you rent it and drop acid before watching - other then that it must be avoided...
