Kateo (2022)
Exhaustingly bad
This is an action flick. It does not aspire to be anything other than an action flick. But it is also a long action flick - in spite of the non-stop action, those 2 hours and 12 minutes really feel like three hours.
If you like action and only action, you might like this. If you like other things in your action movies (such as a coherent storyline, character development, plausible plot devices, passable acting, good camera work, impressive special effects, careful editing etc) then maybe not. And if you're at all troubled by flashing, bouncy motion with lots of abrupt cuts then definitely skip this one.
Sniper: Assassin's End (2020)
Believe the haters
This is a truly spectacularly bad movie. The storyline was incoherent, the dialog was poor, the characters were all one dimensional cliches, the acting was dreadful, the pacing was too slow to build any suspense, and the "action" scenes were a big nothing. Don't waste your time.
The Purge (2013)
Art is meant to shine a mirror on society - this film does that
I have to be honest, the writing, directing and acting in this movie were all "B" movie grade. It is literally a very badly made movie. Nonetheless I would definitely rate it as "worth a watch".
At various points in the movie the characters have to re-evaluate what they believe, why they believe it, what they are prepared to do as a result of those beliefs, and what the implications will be for other people. These are good questions for everyone to consider.
It is in many ways a stupid movie. But it should make you think. And that's what art is meant to do.
Reminiscence (2021)
This is not an action movie.
I really don't understand the hate for this movie. I was engaged and entertained. No, the story did not unfold quickly, but the main twist would never have worked without time to brew.
If you need an adrenaline-fueled action flick, then that's not what this is. If you're prepared to give it a chance, it may surprise you.
Faster (2010)
Dunno about that car matchup
I quite enjoyed this movie, but I didn't come here to talk about that. I'm not a car guy, but it seemed implausible to me that the American muscle car that Dwayne Johnson's character drove could outpace the Ferrari supercar that the hitman drove. So I did the research (you don't have to thank me):
* Chevrolet Chevelle SS 454: 0-100 kph 5.5s top speed 215 kph
* Ferrari 360 Modena: 0-100 kph 4.5s. Top speed 295 kph
Closer than I thought :-)
Unknown (2011)
Watchable movie let down by ridiculous ending
I found this to be an intriguing movie that quickly drew me in and kept me engaged. A series of little plot twists had me rethinking what I thought I already knew as I tried to imagine what truth Neeson's character would uncover in the end that would allow everything to make sense. And that was my mistake - imagining it would make sense in the end. Alas, the writers were also unable to imagine a plausible ending, let alone write one.
Sweet Girl (2021)
Incoherent nonsense from start to finish
There is nothing even vaguely plausible about the story line of this movie. The writers somehow took a bad idea and made it worse. The "twist" at the end was little more than "and it was all a dream". The action scenes were ridiculous and unbelievable. The acting wasn't the worst I've seen, but there was no hope of rescuing this dumpster fire. I really regret sticking with it to the end. The credits rolling were a blessed relief.
If I can save one person from wasting their time on this one I've made the world a better place.
Movie 43 (2013)
I gave this movie a 2 because I laughed twice
But I think that was overly generous. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy lowbrow humor but this movie is just absolute trash. Some other reviewers compared it to American Pie or Something about Mary - those movies were absolute comedic masterpieces in comparison to this. It's not funny, it's certainly not clever and it has absolutely nothing to say - don't waste your time.
Fractured (2019)
Painful to watch. Wish I hadn't bothered.
Can't believe all the positive reviews this one is getting. I found almost all the characters highly annoying, the story made no sense along the way and concluded with the sort of resolution a 3rd grader might have written. I have watched and enjoyed psychological thrillers - this one is not deserving of that label.
