Chandralekha (1948)
A Thoroughly enjoyable movie, with good acting, music and dances
For a movie to be made in 1948,this is technically a very fine movie. Has an interesting story line, in which two prince brothers (played excellently by M.K.Raddha and Ranjan) vie with each other for the throne as well as the beautiful village dancer girl Chandaralekha, played beautifully be T.R.Rajakumari. Finally it the goodness that wins over the badness. The final sword duel between the two brothers reminds one of many such duels in Hollywood movies,of course with Indian flavor. Another interesting attraction is the circus show which becomes an important part of the story. For the first time a circus with all its feats has been brought into a movie. Comedy show by the husband and and wife pair of N.S.Krishnan and T.A.Madhuram is enjoyable.
Basant Bahar (1956)
A good film with good music and acting
It is a musical, set in the background of Chitradurga in Ksarnataka, during Tippu Sultan's time. The film an adaptation of Kannada Novel Hamsageethe, written by one of the top Kannada writers ThaRaSu. Too many deviations and the film fails to reproduce the real flavor of the novel. The film is marked by excellent music and good acting by key actors. Some of the songs sung by Mannadea nd Lata Mangeshkar are unforgettable. The famous classical singer Pandit Bhimsen Joshi has rendered a key song, in an excellent manner. Musical score by Sankar and Jaikishan is excellent. Bharat Bhushan as Gopal and and Nimmi as Gopi are excellent. Shyam Kumar shines in a brief role as Tippu Sultan
Pyar Ka Mausam (1969)
With the normal run of the mill story of the sixtees the film scores with it's excellent picturisation and music.
The plot is the usual lost and found son, intermixed with a lot of melodrama. What makes the film beautiful is the picturisation, comic scenes and excellent music. Main cast consisting of Shashi Kapoor, Asha Parekh, Bharath Bhushan and Nirupa Roy play their roles wver well. Asha Parekh looks ravishingly beautiful and naughty most of the times. Shashi Kapoor is pleasing in his style of acting. Picturised mostly in the hilly regions in the Northern India, the picture captures the scenic beauty of the region with its excellent photography. Most attractive part of the film is its music. Songs sung by Lata Mangeshkar, Mohammad Rafi and Kishore kumar are lilting and ring the ears for long. Highly likable movie.
Shabab (1954)
A reasonably good with excellent music and good acting by artists
This film, made in the wake of the success of film "Baiju Bawra" has the main theme of music and power of music. It is the love story of a musician - a lost princess himself and a prince. The king and his stooges try to prevent their love from blossoming. The hero wins the heart of the prince and others but loses his life in the end.
The strength of the film is its music-sung by Lata Mangeshkar, Mohammad Rafi, Mannade and Hemant Kumar. Nutan, the young heroine of the film lives the role of the prince at the same time looking charming. Bharat Bhushan repeats his good work of Baiju Bawra in this film also. Overall a good and thoroughly enjoyable film.
Baiju Bawra (1952)
One of the films I liked most and I enjoy seeing it even today
This is the fictional story concerning Baiju Bawra (Bharat Bhushan), a singer at the time of Mughal Emporer Akbar. He is looking for vengence against Tansen, Emporer Akbar's Court Singer. Tansen's soldiers have killed Baiju's father for singing in front ot Tansen's palace. In pursuit of his vengence, he goes to a small village on the banks of River Jamuna, where he loves Gauri, a village belle, played exquisitely by Meena Kumari. He is swayed to music and love on one side and vengence on the other side. In the end, He defeats Tansen in a musical bout in the court of Akbar, Befriends Tansen and comes back to his beloved Gauri, but dies by drowning in river Jamuna, in his eagerness to stop the marriage of Gauri, with another man.
Music is unforgettable, most melodious, composed by Naushad and sung by Mohammad Rafi and Lata Mangeshkar. Characters are portrayed beautifully by all the cast. An excellent movie. Do not miss it if you get a chance. It is worth possessing a VCD also.
