Lioness: Beware the Old Soldier (2024)
The viceral women at war returns
Right from the start they pull no punches, brutal / hard hitting/ no nonsense.
Not sure about joe's family being used in the opener when it could've been pushed to a later episode when some down time is required both narratively and figuritively. As i think it would've been better to have some of the second episodes set up in the premier instead but they did have 2 episodes released.
But that was kind of the mantra for season 1 which i binged the lot of in short order and now i'm waiting each week for the next instalment.
Acting/ music / direction all on point and following on from season 1 established characters personalities and the stunt work / set pieces are crazy and intense.
So if you can hold off on weekly watches, wait till it's all out and binge it !
FBI: Most Wanted: Varsity Blues (2024)
j'accuse ! Draco malfoy would be proud
Imagine draco lording it over the pedentary in hogwarts with his cronies untill an insane hermione and confused luna show up with revenge in mind and no regard for common sense or due process.
It's cliche dumb kids doing dumb pranks and not ever considering the consequences and even when faced with them they become characatures of themselves.
If you watch accused imagine that same level of bad writing and sensationalism/ exagerations on dumb kids doing really dumb things and being even dumber about any and all consequences.
And just when you think it couldnt get dumber the show litterally points it out ?!
Save yourself the annerism and look up cyber bullying revenge movies and watch one or more of them for your fix.
Acting is the usual mixed bag, people where paid to write this drivel ? Music not bad, as for direction i wonder if that person took a nap and left it to the producer.
Accused: Marcus' Story (2024)
The definition of throwing crap at a wall to see what sticks.
Imagine a squirrel with adhd stuck in a nut factory and you'll get an idea of what this episode is like to follow.
I was about to call my chiropractor for whiplash!
This is probs the worst episode in the shows history:
Acting - sub par even for this shows mixed bag.
Music - there was music ?
Direction- there was a director ?
Writing - like a can of worms ?
So many idea's so little time !
The format usualy 'works' because there is a goal, whether it's social commentary on injustice / marginalising or consquences.
Here the focus is claimed to be about Ai and how it can be dangerous/ open to abuse, but for some reason the writers couldn't even decide on what to do with it, attempting pad out the story with cliches ranging from police brutality / racism to black mail, infidelity or simple murder.
It's another one answered question out of many with a misguided attempt to make a statement about something. But it just feels half assed/ lazy/ banking on 'water cooler talk' to do the heavy lifting.
In the end i was left thinking why was he even in court ? It seemed like out of all the people involved he was the least responsible but someone felt the need to blame him anyway ?
Star Trek: Lower Decks: Shades of Green (2024)
Orions are fun
Tendi centric episode that has an interesting side plot of financial freedom/ decapitalising, which may have a deeper meaning / reference ?
Tendi's faces the consequences of her treasure hunt and using a more pacifist approach to pirating, in the shape of a solar sail race.
I love tendi, she's long over due some development and a time to shine, and this episode does it well, but once again the short run time hinders some of the depth, this show always leaves me wanting more from it and this is more painfull with it being the 'last season' we can only hope they have plans to revisit the show in a year or two.
Usual quality, great fights, touching / wholesome wrap up if a bit convenient of tendi's family.
T'lynn learning more things about friendship and doing what vulcans do ' ironically' over react.
Hoping there is a pay off for tendi / rutherford / t'lynn project !
Star Trek: Lower Decks: Dos Cerritos (2024)
Probs not the best season opener but still a good episode
All the LD hallmarks are here, tight story, references, good jokes, the established animation and a few extra's thrown in the opening titles.
I'm sure some trekkies will do a leonardo di caprio point meme at them :D
Music in opening titles also seems to have gotten a bit of a refresh ? Or my experimenting with audio EQ has highlighted the more subtle notes in it :D
Voice acting all great, but i feel like it got a bit bogged down with too many idea's and potential sub plots with all the 'dopplegangers' and in the end only mariner and boim's got the most time, with rutherford a close 3rd and everyone else kind of blurred together or wasn't interesting.
It's concept could've been expanded on more if it was a 2 parter, more sinister goings on or more suspicious behaviour.
Not the best not the worst.
Accused: April's Story (2024)
too much suspension of disbelief required.
This episode had a lot of moving parts but someone forgot the wd40.
This whole episode goes from 0-60 back to 0 and then right back to 60, like it's using air brakes and parachutes as they jump from one plot point to another before instantly throwing the after burner switch and nos on max.
But none of them really get explored or answered it's all moot in the end, only her supposed 'guilt' of road rage, which lets be honest, he started it, then he chose to make a big deal about it, he chased her, he baited her all the way, but conveniently there is only evidence / witness for her guilt not his.
Although she had several chances to stop, take a beat and not fall in to such obvious baiting, she's rational, calm despite this guy and still managing to think cle... oh wait no now she's suddenly lost her freaking mind and is now the instigator ?!
Just when we think we might get answers in the court scenes, it's back to the chase/ series of events in the usual slow plodding recount.
It's one of those instances where the writers seem too focused on the sensationalism / drama of the story and not how these things would be investigated and thus the court case seems more like rail roading and victim blaming, which this show has done before but better and more obviously.
The only possible saving grace is the stunt driving despite the series usual style of doing things, imo the acting does a fine job of emoting the required emotions even if they're over the top.
Notes :
Surely there would be cctv footage ? To show him causing problems in the coffee parking lot and the fuel station ? Hell even witnesses at the coffee shop ?
The conclusion is at least somewhat logical and fair but her lawyer seemed more interested in cheating the system with a sympathy vote instead of facts which wouldn't be hard to get hold off.
Final point : Could april have told the truth instead of a woe is me my life is hard and my husband is useless ? Sure but at that point in the case it was pretty clear she was guilty of her crime regardless of the circumstances that lead to it , so telling a greiving widow and her father less son that their daddy was an utter prick he got what was coming to him and then some, would feel counter productive to getting a lighter sentence.
Accused: Lorraine's Story (2024)
lacks a definitive answer at the end, so if you want closure avoid this one.
A Medium attempts to assist a grieving couple locate their missing son.
This episode also falls in to the poking a difficult issue with a stick to see what happens when people talk about it, which would be great if there was a reddit for the show, but it seems to have dissapeared.
Acting is on par with s1, some might find lorraine a bit on the nose with the actor's real life struggles and the lesser known actors show their limits either from the relaxed direction or lack of depth in the writing.
This story has a few holes in it, the biggest of which are, lorraine genuinely being a psychic or just very imaginative with above average perceptions ? Or a con artist just looking to get by. With the fate of the missing boy being forgotten in leu of a water cooler moment for fans to discuss it ad nausium.
Bottom line it's another story thats been done better as a movie with a bigger cast and a more satisfying conclusion.
The Grand Tour: The Grand Tour: One for the Road (2024)
raises glass - cheers guys been a pleasure to watch.
A fitting tribute to what they've done for a long time, felt less scripted than their previous efforts, with more of their natural chemistry showing, which made the rather stupid staged stuff even more obvious than before.
I didn't watch the trailer this time and i'm glad i didn't.
Could it have been better , yes, could they have spent less time trying to be funny and just be themselves for 2 hours, yes.
Did i stil enjoy this ? Yes.
I'm not spoiling anything here and kind of surprised no one else has tbh.
Ignore the trailer go in blind and enjoy !
Keep an eye out for more clarksons farm which is rumoured to be going for 5th turn and check out hammonds workshop on discovery plus or other places if you know what i mean nudge nudge wink wink maybe james is doing more travel shows ?
Don't be sad they're spliting up be glad they stuck together this long :)
Review stuff - brilliant views, trademark banter and some of the classic jokes, and a fitting way to end it.
Terminator Zero (2024)
Should've been a movie. (dubbed version)
For a compact series of 8 episodes it still manages to spread the plot thin with little nods and references to the previous franchise entries which for fans will be a treat to see them, but it lacks the ironic comedic timing of the later as this is a more serious take like the first 2 movies.
Story : could be considered a hodge podge of the previous entries with new characters, but each of them will feel familiar to fans.
Animation - classic production ig, detailed, tastefull ( rated 15), violent, action packed
Music - fits the moment, well chosen.
Ep 1 - 3 are a slower pace while the plot is outlined and the players are introduced,
ep4 on wards increases the stakes with action, impressive story telling that makes the franchise fresher than ever before.
Here's hoping for a season 2.
Richard Hammond's Workshop: Something Has to Change (2024)
More of the same
They have some drama about hammond not being a 'good manager' and instead opt to have 'fun' while they work, andrew has ' left ' for other 'opportunities'.
So they tease the 'manager' arriving and putting the lads on notice, (he arrives next week) a new villain like character to get the business 'on track'.
This episode is mostly about a blue alpha romeo owned by a woman and her 'autistic' son and hammond trying to tidy up the work shop, because some ' expert / high level restorer ' guy / friend says there's too many crisp packets and clutter around and hammond once again goes off for a day of fun with izzy.
It's a standard discovery show, some realism spoilt / spread thin with fakery and staged stuff.
Lets be real if hammond didn't have a clue what he was doing or didn't already have good people working for / with him he wouldn't have lasted a year let alone on the 4th year, so i wish hammond would stand up for himself a bit more with discovery to make it less oh no the drama ! And more Yes we do great work !
On the whole looks to be another good season of workshop.
Star Trek: Prodigy (2021)
Season 2 Early impressions
The writers have shaken things up, with a big move to up the stakes and the intrigue.
Not often a show hooks me with chilling plot twists that tantalizing the senses.
Names drops, big changes, all done with more impressive visuals and a music score that goes deep in to the soul.
Voice acting is on point but easy to follow, plot so far is quite a leap forward and it might prove to be too much for them to wrap up but thats a lot of episodes away.
Released in full, 20 episodes each around the 20 minute mark. Opening credits unchanged.
Fans of s1 will enjoy it and for those others who havent yet taken the plunge watch s1 and enjoy, yes it's lighter trek aimed more at kids but i feel adults who aren't too picky will find things to love too at least till lower decks is back for it's final season.
We can only hope this show carries on to a season 3 <3.
The Out-Laws (2023)
Was botox sponsoring this gammon filled cringe fest ?
There's hamming it up and then there's this movie, is this what comedy films have become ?
It's not even low hanging fruit it's bottom of the barrel rotten, worm infested mush.
I weep for humanity, surprised pierce brosnan stooped so low but i guess it's a pay check at the end of the day and he has a retirement to consider.
Basic plot, basic formula, a few laughs that are good, direction - probs could've been better but it's serviceable.
Painfull cgi and stunt work.
I was tempted to stop watching when the 'emt brother' started convulsing and imitating a lewd action, as that whole concept for a character is way beyong suspension of disbelief.
Probs one of those movies to watch when high or drunk cos def not for the sober and sane.
Atlas (2024)
off brand titanfall meets terminator and edge of tomorrow
For gamers who are familiar with titanfalls ' pilots ' they will feel this move might be copying a lot from them.
Everyone else gets a mech suit movie with j lo, love or hate her she's playing a by the numbers role somewhat similar to tom cruise in edge of tomorrow but with out the benefit of time resets.
I had a good time watching this movie, it's over flowing with good quality cgi, servicable plot and really good action.
J-lo doesn't deserve the hate she's getting for it, only so much an actress can do, considering what atlas goes through i'd say the common complaints are just being overly critical for an ai vs machine / mech movie like seriously.
It's not going to win oscars purely cos it's by the numbers and a bit cliche but sometimes thats what people want unless they're too wrapped up in j lo hate.
Worth a watch !
FBI: Most Wanted: Rendition (2024)
The boondock saints episode.
For those familiar with that movie franchise they will see many similarities with this episode.
Usual quality for acting, direction, writing seems to floating around the slow plodding sess pool that is has become.
We can only hope they wake up and do better.
At least remy finally gave corey an ultimatum and woke his lazy ass up. As unrealistic as it is to force someone with depression / anxiety off their ass and be a functioning adult.
That process varies in each person with those afflictions but it is rarely a quick fix.
They even got one of the actors from the films to be the bad guy.
Heck it has a hint of john wick about it too.
FBI: Most Wanted: Desperate (2024)
Cliche kidnapping of students.
Write a list of those tropes / make a bingo card and cross them out after each development!
It felt like i was watching 'crisis' series 1 from 2014, with the basic story, but lacking the effort/ intrigue and length.
This story has all the classic over used elements but to list them would be a spoiler, but you can probs see it coming as it's all very predictable.
The side plot is remy's nephew from the previous weeks, who is also a predictable mess.
Acting usual mixed standard, by the numbers.
Sound / music good for the most part with fitting scores.
Direction, usual faire for procedural likes to make things over dramatic and try to use music for emotions but after so many years of the trick might not work anymore. #jaded af.
Notes - Some woefull writing of the bad guys actions and thought process really don't hold water.
FBI: Most Wanted: Hollow (2024)
The quality has dropped
This show has had a good run of keeping the fbi taskforce on an even keel of justice and not leaping to conclusions too often/ rarely.
The addition of remy and other new characters seems to have come at a cost of that, as this week remy seems to have completely lost all his principles and rules and just gets angry and judgemental with the first piece of evidence and suspicious eye witness / escaped victim, which usually in these shows tells the story of he might look guilty but it's all to neat and tidy and early in the episode for them to be the guilty party.
The episode even starts with them chasing someone who is clearly white. So someone was lacking faith in the episodes story telling.
This episode tries to be a dark gritty tale in the vibe of dexter / hannibal but it lacks their polish and crafting of the narrative, in a rushed by the numbers drama, it's almost impressive it's taken this long in the shows lifespan for them to litteraly phone in a story but it is kind of par for the course of this season.
Kung Fu Panda 4 (2024)
After 3 awesome movies, the quality has dropped.
It's fun, predictable and has a wholesome wrap up.
But underneath the slick animation, new characters, quick fights and a slightly forced anti violence message, it boils down to cheap kfp 2 clone.
Which would be fine if it did it better with higher stakes, more drama and more growth. But someone didn't get the memo and imo we have ended up with a poorer imitation of it.
It's fast paced and rushed in to a 90 min window, fights are awesome but short, po has a tiny bit of developement and awkwafina just feels phoned in for a potential spin off series, there is no corelation with the tv shows either.
Overall i would say this is trying to be 'best bits of kung fu panda' but the choices of those near direct references are from someone who only read the cliff notes of the movies and in so doing lacks punch.
The ending is an interesting concept but was it earned ? You decide.
The Grand Tour: The Grand Tour: Sand Job (2024)
An epic adventure for the most part.
This penultimate special seems to be a love letter to true fans of these 3 idiots escapades, It takes many of the critisisms on board and has come up with a nicely balanced wholesome 2 hours and a 14 mins of them being less of the ' characters they have made and more of themselves.
Yes there is scripting, yes there is some painfully staged skits, but it's done with a lot more effort and care than many of the grand tours early episodes and later top gear.
This special has minimal bloating, we get to see more of their chemistry and larking about with glorious shots and views, slow mo, panning shots, expertly shot drone footage. It's a feast for fans.
The music is mostly good, a welcome return of the a team theme, but later on it's goes for a different vibe around half way that i didn't really vibe with. (But that is subjective)
I was tempted to give it all 10 but the editing lacked some polish, like the iron ore train for example could have been halved and nothing would have been lost and then james revenge prank on hammond with the roof / tent rack was frighteningly dangerous not to mention malicious. Yet clarkson the usuall ring leader in pranks gets away with it ?
And the ending !
I pray the final episode in zimbabwe follows this formula but leaves out the pranks that could easily go wrong.
Final thoughts, good jokes that don't overstay their welcome, the chemistry on full display, the longer run time gives a better view of the trip and the lil snippets in to their moods, random events.
Tracker (2024)
Reacher lite meets smallvilles green arrow
Justin hartley fresh out of that woke show, returns to his smallville roots with a reacher lite show.
Less violence, drives a truck and lives in an rv, instead of being a hobo/ vagrant.
First ep is easy watching, kid is taken, cops quick to judge and arrest, cop gets the hots for justin / colter the moment he is proven innocent.
Colter has an ex who is a hot asian lawyer, but she learned her lesson ?
He works for two women, who have been given a lesbian couple angle. But feels forced.
Production value, usual canadian high rating, great views, good editing, well directed and sound is clear even when outside.
Acting, mostly good if a bit cliche and standard for procedural.
The Beekeeper (2024)
Pretty much john wick with equalizer / reacher vibes but is lacking in polish.
Dumb cringey bad guys trying to justify being bad guys is the order of the day, so if you love my previous mentioned comparisons you'll have an idea of what to expect.
This movie is classic jason statham, his moves and prowess is on full display with minimal cut aways and stunt standins.
Jason shows gun play close to keanu's and fighting off henchman like alan ritchinson's reacher.
Acting- acceptable for most for what they had to work with, others are plain annoying ( head of the call centers and random pmc / henchmen, and oh boy the state of the blond highlighted foreign merc in a yellow jacket), Josh hutcherson goes for a less is more chill vibe, and jeremy irons just oozes coolness has he takes control of the situation.
Music tries to be a unique flavour emmulating john wicks score fits well but isn't memorable.
Effects - strictly mid nothing special or fancy just what is needed and does the job.
Stunt work - quite alot of embelishment in perps flying around from kicks and explosions.
Fights are pretty good with some really nice set pieces.
Enjoy!
Kevin James: Irregardless (2024)
Kevin badly needed a pop filter.
The mic he used is terrible , for what reason ? Nostalgia ? Low budget ? Someone couldn't be bothered to give him a modern mic ? Should have had a lavalier mic clipped on and thhis old style mic used as a prop.
So for me the constant breathing noises popping and messy audio completely ruins the humour potential.
The volume is all over the place, seems the audience were a bunch of seals for laughing at litterally nothing.
Jokes wise ? Humour is subjective and often unique like a finger print, ageing bald guy talks life, death and history.
I found when he's quieter and more calm he was funnier than his wild physical attempts at humour.
It's quickfire either from bad editing or they gave kevin a adrenaline shot before he walks on.
Not his best not his worst.
Lift (2024)
Classic heist movie, Very oceans 11, with a hint of red notice.
It's a watchable pop corn flick, kevin tries a bit hard to be a different character than his usual clueless / inept/ loveable goofs and i reckon he pulls it off for the most part, but i get the sense he can only hold in his giggly ego for so long before he has to get a pat on the back and an atta boy, for reciting a line with out laughing every 2 minutes as his scenes are RARELY that long with out several edits / cut aways.
He is supported by well rounded mix of actors, who all seem competant with loki's renslayer as second fiddle and an aging sam worthington.
CGI is a bit over the top and it does push the suspension of disbelief a bit more than some in the genre have done before, ( plane) which for anyone with even the most basic of aerodynamic knowledge will laugh at.
Music- fits well.
Stunt work is pretty good (plane stuff).
Is it perfect ? Hell no but it's fun, harmless escapism, which is what most heist movies are meant to be. A simple fact that seems lost on a lot of other reviewers.
Reacher: Fly Boy (2024)
Didn't stick the landing.
Where to begin ?
This finale should've been taken back to the drawing board, The pacing is rushed, we learn what happened to swan, what kind of men langston and AM really are and reacher is basically hercules.
Production - another rough cgi, obvious stunt work set piece, poorly mixed audio ( i use headphones).
Acting - usual standard, some shine others just phone it in.
Music - well chosen.
The episode starts right where ep7 left off with reacher going in to the lions den and ready to fight.
The bad guys become utter chumps and drop like flies, and it just gets worse from there.
With out spoiling specifics, the main fight is over by the half way point of the episode and the rest of it is used to wrap up the 'victims families' and reachers good byes.
Some violence, a teeny bit of gore, a lot of suspension of disbelief required and alot of mixed messages.
A good sum up of the season, moments of brilliance and good action let down by dumb writing and forced cliches.
Reacher: The Man Goes Through (2024)
Reacher is on the hunt.
This episode ramps things up to 11, russo is avenged in brutal fashion.
This episode is sublime, pays off more plot threads, fights, gun battle, kills, reacher being a complete savage in his usual calm yet menacing manner.
One tiny issue, having OD and dixon being nabbed soon after marloe and her daughter leaving ? Could've been cut for time but seems a lil odd they would go willingly, unless langston sent a whole squad after them :D But could marloe and daughter be in danger still or is that just going to be left to assume they made it ?
Production value still good but it does feel like they had some casting issues with how minimal the extra's / supporting back ground characters have been, which compared to similar shows where there is so many it's stands out.
Rip russo you'll be missed.
Reacher: New York's Finest (2024)
The pieces fall in to place.
For those looking for an improvement over ep5 will find it here, but it's still focusing on the story elements, with a bit of action toward the end.
Nay sayers will rate it low because of this more cerebral take to pay off the sub plot threads, we get definitive answers on a couple of things, but i won't spoil them.
This episode picks up soon after ep5, traveling around is skipped over and they just suddenly somewhere else.
Quality is still high with sound action and most of the casts acting and some good levity and one liners.
Downside: the ending tries to make a statement and develope a character but the final seconds cheapen it.
