Rebel Moon - Part Two: The Scargiver (2024)
What's wrong with those people
When I read the bad reviews, I couldn't believe it. I said to myself: this is Snider, it can't be as bad as they say... Well, I was right, the bad reviews are unfounded, and I seriously wonder what's wrong with these people who have left so many bad reviews. This film is a phenomenal visual spectacle! Everything about it is perfect. Every scene is a work of art. You can feel everyone's hard work and talent. At every moment, I was exclaiming WOW! And WOW! And more WOW! The costumes, sets, atmospheres, characters, etc. And the breathtaking shots... everything is perfect. The first part left me a little perplexed, as I wasn't expecting such a scenario, but the second part clarified a lot of things, and we can then grasp the whole work. I very much hope there will be a sequel soon.
The Banishing (2020)
Really good
I was shocked to see how much bad reviews were written about this movie because it was good. It was different, really well made, good atmosphere, good acting, and really disturbing characters. Harris was my favourite. It really felt he was from another era, with is appearance and strange hairstyle. Banishing is a bit slow but well maintained. It's short, but it's ok. The story is original and a bit deep, so if you don't pay attention you may feel a bit confuse. It's not a movie that you watch for the ending, it's rather an atmosphere that you enjoy frame by frame. I would have preferred a longer movie with more scenes to clarify more the story.
In the Mouth of Madness (1994)
There's an audience for that?
Each time I start watching a movie of Carpenter, I have to convince me that it won't be and can't be as bad as the last time... but geez, I'm wrong each time. I gave 3 stars for the acting of the main actor, that was good. But beside that, it was again a big mess of nonsense, confusing art and creativity with chaos and absurdity. But as I said in my title, there seems to be an audience for that, when we look at the ratings. It seems like a script written by a bunch of twelve year old kids. The makeups are as bad as usual, the music also. Always a ridiculous electric guitar solo for the introduction, as if we were watching a heavy metal band show.
Awoken (2019)
Start by turning off the lights if you want them to sleep
Everyone in this movie seems to have trouble sleeping. "You look tired, you should go to sleep". "You need some sleep, you should stop for the day."
The concept of the film is that specialists are trying to help some people with sleep disorders (or something like that), but they're keeping them in a room brightly lit by office fluorescents 24 hours a day... But who the hell could sleep in such an environment?
The script definitely lacks realism. The film is riddled with nonsensical little details, as if no one had taken the time to revise the whole thing before launching the project. For example, when a VCR is turned off, the screen turns blue, it doesn't switch to a snowy screen (that's when a TV channel loses it's signal).
It's obvious that the actors are inexperienced, but you feel they've been given a chance, and they try their best.
The bad reviews are well-founded, but it's still a little film to watch on TV when there's nothing else on... It's not a complete failure.
High Life (2018)
Definitely not for everyone
It's not a film for everyone, and you also need to be in the right mood to get through it. It's well-made, brutal at times, subtle at others, more human drama than science fiction. It's a drama set in a harsh and extremely unusual environment.
The actors and actresses are impeccable. They gave their 100% and that enhances the quality of this work. The author obviously wanted to bring to the screen human emotions that are often raw and often subtle.
However, as far as I'm concerned, I wasn't really in the right mood, and I found myself speeding things up by advancing certain scenes that seemed too slow and long. Unless you particularly like the subject matter of these scenes, it becomes hard to bear and you find yourself using fast forward... But overall, it's a nice work for people who love cinema..
The Matrix Resurrections (2021)
Give this film a second chance and you'll see
The expectations were too specific for many people. Not too high, but too specific. That explains the bad reviews.
The first time I listened to this sequel, I was very unsettled, because the author had definitely dared to go in a direction no one had expected. Sometimes you get the feeling that the author has deliberately sought to "despiritualize" the global climate that had built up around the trilogy and its characters over the years. After all, this is just a fictional story.
But after waiting a few years, I listened to it again with a more open mind and was pleasantly surprised. The new characters are awesome. I understood the flow of this sequel much more clearly, because when we have expectations, they cloud our ability to receive the new idea.
The idea behind this sequel is brilliant and well executed. Of course, you have to bear in mind that this is not a canvas trilogy, but a single film. So things are compressed and a bit rushed compared with the first three films.
But it was so nice to see these characters in action again, and for that I'd like to thank the whole team who worked on this ambitious project.
I removed one star out of 10, as I was disappointed by the appearance of Niobe and Marovingian. I think they were poor choices. And finally, because Neo used his ability to repel projectiles a little too much... But I would be ready for a 5th opus tomorrow.
Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022)
Complete mess
It seems obvious that someone paid a lot of people to write false reviews. This movie is only a big load of crap, of absurd jokes, of boring script, etc. It's seems like a bunch of kids wrote all the silly ideas that came out of their mind in an afternoon and gave it to the producer. It's simply impossible, seriously impossible that it won any prises "legally". Someone somewhere push some buttons, made some phone calls, and that's it... I gave a 2 out of 10 only because I like the main actress. And I felt bad for her, because I am sure that she did not expect such a bad movie. Anyway, any sane person won't be able to give more than a 3 for that chaotic craziness.
Prey (2022)
It was good, but...
The story was a bit too much childish and predictable. I just hate when all the beginning scenes are staged in order to prepare the development of the story.
But the new environment was a good idea. The actors were good and the costumes and makeup were believable.
An English language version was not a good idea, because it felt wrong and unnatural.
The lines that are in French are full of errors. And the CGI animals were not enough realistic. Also, a bear that has plenty of food won't attack violently for nothing.
But overall I was happy to have a new Predator movie to watch and the experience was nice.
Travis: The True Story of Travis Walton (2015)
A case that should be known by all
I suppose it's a little difficult to fill an hour and a half with a single case of alien abduction. These traumatic events happen quickly and are short. But they did a good job of collecting testimonies and building an interesting documentary.
I've known about this case for a long time, and I expected a little more information (because this documentary was made in 2015, and they had plenty of time to gather data), especially when Travis recounts the details of the event. Because to my surprise, they did the opposite; Travis tells his story quite briefly, leaving out details.
Still, he spent several days in the presence of aliens, and I wish they had gotten more details, either through simple recollection, or through hypnosis.
Alien Abduction: Answers (2022)
Good intentions, bad references
The initiator of this documentary in my opinion has really lived an extraterrestrial experience. Unfortunately, he soon found himself in a very bad environment... And he has largely built his documentary with members of this dubious environment.
First, he chose to put all his trust in Strieber, who in my opinion is a fraud, a writer stuck with writer's block who saw in this growing phenomenon of alien abduction an almost inexhaustible source of inspiration.
In the group of people around him, in my opinion there are only 2 ladies who seem to me to have had real experiences... the others not... just cookoos looking for a way to feel special.
You must remember that just because the phenomenon has a real basis, it does not mean that everyone who comes forward is an authentic "experiencer".
One can often rely on the fact that true experiencers suffer from PTSD most of the time. Because going through this is deeply traumatic. The Striebers and friends hardly manage to "talk" about it without laughing... That was my 2 cents.
Army of the Dead (2021)
Very good
Don't listen to the bad reviews, watch it and you'll have a good time. It's different, original, and well done. The casting is incredible. I'm giving a 8/10 because there were some little flaws here and there, just enough to make the overall not perfect.
The Dark Tower (2017)
I want to see a movie, not to read a book!
Wonderful, very well done! Almost perfect. It should have last longer in order to complete the story with more content. Or it should have a second part to it. But anyway, I had a lot of fun for the time it last. It's a well crafted movie, very precise in every aspect. The young actor was impressive, flawless. All the bad reviews comes from books fanatics.
The King's Man (2021)
Chaotic and pointless
Weak storyline. Doesn't feel like a Kingsman movie at all. It's more of a copy-paste of a hundred of pieces that doesn't really go together. The script doesn't bring you on a trip to somewhere, but rather leave you sitting on the shore. They tried to link the beginning of the Kingsman to a World War plot but it didn't work.
Without Remorse (2021)
The book here, the book there, blah blah...
Finally a movie that kept me at the edge of my seat and smiling until the end! Fantastic and perfect movie. I was expecting a 5 or a 6 movie, but this one is a 10. Perfect acting, perfect story, perfect soundtrack, etc. That is entertainment made by talented artists.
DC Noir (2019)
Well done
The actors are really good. The soundtrack too. The style is a bit like a down to earth mini Sin City without the special effects. They did a really good job and I recommend it to anyone who like the noir style.
Shadow in the Cloud (2020)
Nice little gem
I understand the first wave of bad reviews, they were expecting a 2 hours popcorn Hollywood action movie and they got out of it with a big "WTF did I just watch?" in their faces... But the second wave of reviews will be a small tsunami of good ones. Because it's definitely not a B movie. It's really well made. The images are beautiful, and the actors are very good.
Overall, most of the people will have to watch it twice in order to catch all the allegories and the message behind it. It's an odes to all the women that courageously went to war with the hope that their contribution would bring their love ones back safe and alive, and give a chance to their dream of a happy family life. But those women had to confront the ugliness and insane brutality of that men's war, represented by an horrible creature.
Tenet (2020)
What an incredible adventure!
The kind of movie that you have to watch several times in order to enjoy it completely. Nolan is a master in crafting that kind of ambitious story. The casting is perfect, the soundtrack is incredible. I really had a good time, enjoying each minute of that masterpiece.
Love and Monsters (2020)
Zombieland's little brother
Too many fake reviews. This movie is not that good (maybe for a 10 year old). The script is weak and predictable. It's funny sometimes, but feels too much like a copy of Zombieland. The characters are disposable, you don't stick to them (or don't have time to).
Surviving Death (2021)
Well done! Hope to see more.
There's not enough of those series. This one is very well done, and brings many interesting cases. The thing that I found remarkable is the honesty of the participants. They are asking the right questions and it makes this series refreshing. About reincarnation, the last time I watched something that interesting was in the good old Unsolved Mysteries... the case of a soldier who drown in a submarine.
Brahms: The Boy II (2020)
Well done but not enough
I can see all the work they put in that sequel, and it's good, but to release a very good sequel, they should have worked it more, much more. The first part is too slow and long, and the second part lack of imagination and they filled the holes with clichés and characters bad decisions in order to feed the suspense. They had an opportunity to make a nice sequel, but they probably lack time and money... But overall it's a nice try.
Lost Gold of WW2 (2019)
Hope to see a third season!
I removed 2 stars because the narrative repeats over an over the previous content and it becomes annoying. The 8 stars is for the nice filming, the seriousness of the team, and for asking the right questions and taking the right decisions most of the time. The are professionals and you can feel it. It takes guts to search for treasures in a place like that. They put their lives at risk.
The Invisible Man (2020)
This movie is literally attacked by bots.
Don't believe the bad reviews. They are literally attacking this good movie for some reasons, probably related to competition. The beginning is strong. The first half hour is a bit slow, but it does a good job installing the bases of the story. It's a lot about control. About controlling individuals. It describes with precision the psyche of those psychopaths. Moss is fantastic as usual. She delivers fantastically. An overall really nice suspense.
Underwater (2020)
Nicely done
Entertaining, well shot, solid atmosphere, an overall good movie. The only flaws were the predictable events here and there. Because we already saw this here, and that there... and most of the actors were way too young for that kind of characters. That choice is probably to target a young audience. But it made the story less credible.
Gretel & Hansel (2020)
Wow! Spectacular.
Every second of this artwork is so beautiful. The acting is flawless, surprisingly also for the little boy. Every scene is meticulously worked and is truly a feast for the eyes. I gave a nine and not a ten simply because it felt like the beginning of a story. They should make a sequel in order to deepen the story with more details about the witch and the future of Gretel.
ARQ (2016)
What a rush!
I didn't think I would like another time loop movie. But they did it. OMG! This is a little gem. Soooo well done. The actors are perfect and the script felt fresh and new. They managed to create a new way to exploit the concept. I don't understand the people who are complaining about the budget... I never felt that it was a low budget movie... not a second.
