My Week with Marilyn (2011)
Not the Marilyn I want to remember.
As with any biopic, I feel we never know the truth. And this is not the Marilyn I want to remember.
Although a very sweet film focused on her undeniable beauty, it made her seem completely out of control and her entire life controlled by men. I like to think that the first woman to pose nude in Playboy was an empowered and deliberate visionary. Like Betty Page, I think she knew the power of her beauty and leverage it in every instance of her life from relationships to career.
Michelle Williams is outstanding as Marilyn, somehow truly capturing her innocence and direct intention all at once.
The Descendants (2011)
Good not great.
The best thing about this movie is George Clooney, it's refreshing to see him play down a character. Nothing weird, eccentric, or funny about him, just a real man living through real life. Showed sadness, vulnerability, and tenderness. Every emotion was felt on screen. The daughters were good too, a little too forced at the beginning but they mellow out and grow on you as the film goes on.
I also did enjoyed the background story, a well developed tale of history that reflects the Hawaii we know today. I always enjoy a movie that reaches out and makes you think. Beautiful cinematography and location scouting.
Warrior (2011)
Action for the boys + emotion for the girls = Great Date Movie
I loved this movie! Initially I thought my husband would like this movie, I hate to admit that I would normally never watch a movie like this simply based on the subject matter; cage fighting. But I'm glad I listened to the reviews.
Right from the beginning, starting with The National song, it felt real. It didn't feel over acted, everyone was natural and the pace made sense.
The story was brilliant, meaningful and relatable. The action/fighting was exciting, even for someone that doesn't normally like this type of sport. But by far my favorite was the emotional pull each character brought to the movie. The complex family dynamic was enthralling.
My only complaint is that it took me so long to see it.
Magic Mike (2012)
Visually engaging, horrible dialog.
The ONLY reason to see this movie is to supplement the obvious girls night out this skin-flick requires.
Positives: aside from the shiny 6-packs money shots, Steven Soderbergh paints an accurate Florida backdrop (lighting/film) and Matthew McConaughey delivers a perfect performance. Also, Cody Horn reminds me of Maxine Bahns in Ed Burn's The Brothers McMullen, a likable/normal person.
Negatives: I'd hoped more from Channing Tatum after seeing The Vow, maybe it was the screenplay or lack there of but his lines were flat. Again, don't go for the dialog, there's plenty to see that carries the movie.
I feel so sorry for any (straight) husband/boyfriend/co-worker made to see this.
