Jay and Silent Bob Reboot (2019)
One Star Because...
I went into this expecting it to be bad and to my relief, it was. There was one genuine moment that harkened back to early Kevin Smith movies but it was quickly forgotten by the time Silent Bob comes in dressed as Iron Man. Kevin Smith has basically become the equivalent of Adam Sandler, he just has friends more famous than Rob Schneider. Actually, do you know what? I feel like that's an insult to Adam Sandler, a dude who can occasionally make good stuff.
The movie was boring and humorless. I would have given it 3/10 but then Kevin Smith had to slip in a song by the band I despise: Pearl Jam. How DARE you, Kevin Smith! For forcing me to listen to Pearl Jam, this movie gets a 1/10.
WNUF Halloween Special (2013)
Nice Trip Down Memory Lane
I'm so glad that someone found this broadcast and put it on Shudder. It was a nice trip down memory lane. I remember watching it on TV back in 1987 and thinking it was a hoax for ratings. I'm still not entirely convinced that it wasn't. Come on, the evangelical Christians were the bad guys the whole time? Can we get any more cliché? Still, it was nice to see all these old commercials again. I don't remember the strip club one though. Maybe I grew up in the wrong area? The commercials were fun and the broadcast itself was pretty superb, but that ending was so cheesy that it was pretty obvious this was made in the 80s.
The Disaster Artist (2017)
Unfunny Predictable Hollywood Garbage
Unlike a lot of these one star reviewers on imdb, I actually do love The Room. I have it on DVD and watch it whenever I need a pick-me-up. Some people go to bars, I watch The Room (sober, I might add). When I learned there was a book by Greg Sestero, I decided to pick it up and read through it. The book is hysterical and makes Tommy out to be an interesting albeit weird guy. When I learned they were making a movie out of the book with James Franco, I was skeptical but thought it might still be fun.
Boy, was I wrong. The Disaster Artist is the worst kind of bad film: an unfunny comedy. I didn't laugh one time watching this movie. James Franco's impersonation played like an impersonation of Johnny from The Room. I know a lot of you are thinking "It's the same guy." No, if you go on YouTube and watch some Tommy Wiseau videos, he's much stranger in person than his onscreen persona.
There's a bunch of drama added in like some go nowhere plot line about Malcolm in the Middle, or the love interest thrown in because...reasons. Seriously? There wasn't enough REAL LIFE drama for these writers to work with? Maybe they were too stoned reading the book that they missed a lot of the great moments like how Tommy was such a pain that he made two cinematographers quit? There's also the time Greg found Tommy's license only to discover all the information on it is fake. Let's not forget how one of the executive producers was dead at the time of filming.
If you're a fan of The Room, skip this film and go pick up the book. It's funnier and will give you so much more insight into the production of the best worst movie ever made.
Not Cinderella's Type (2018)
Abused Child PSA
My daughter saw this on Amazon Prime and wanted to watch it. She thought the film was gonna be a sweet take on the Cinderella story and instead we ended up getting this heavy handed public service announcement on child abuse. Then at the end, everything is all better and wrapped up in a cute little package.
Look, I've known several people who grew up in abusive families and this film sort of felt like it was making light of the experience. I understand that it's a movie but I don't think drunk people would appreciate a movie about an alcoholic just quitting cold turkey and going "Yep, all better now." It's something that is never fully gone and some days are harder than others.
My main complaint isn't even how they handled the message, it's the fact it had a message to handle. When I sit down with my daughter to watch some Cinderella movie, I expect to see just another retelling of Cinderella, not a poorly executed PSA on child abuse. Get your priorities in order Silver Peak Productions!
Eiga: minna! Esupâ da yo! (2015)
A Fun Perverted Ride from Sion Sono
I'm not a fan of most teen sex romps (like American Pie) but I found this film rather enjoyable to watch. Sure, it's silly but that's part of the magic. It's sort of like if Love Exposure had a baby with Why Don't You Play in Hell with people running around in their underwear thrown in for good measure. If that sounds up your alley, definitely check out The Virgin Psychics. If you didn't like either of those movies, you may want to skip this one.
