The Motive (2020–2021)
3/10
Total waste of time!
20 January 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Intuitively I felt that this wasn't one I should watch, yet I did and I feel more unfulfilled afterwards, then when Frodo wasn't able to throw the ring into the fires of Mordor. Really! Why did I watch this? Waiting for the motive that never came I had to watch in action a nasty lawyer, stupid policemen, a lame psychiatrist and a lot of Stockholm Syndrom. Crazy.

The Undertaker (2013– )
9/10
Fantastic series
22 March 2016
Why is nobody watching this series? No reviews yet? I stumbled upon this magnificent series on Netflix by accident and I binged the whole first two seasons in a total of a few weeks. Now I have to wait for the following seasons....

The story is about Luc, a former police inspector (overweight, unhealthy life style, grumpy, like they should) who has taken over the family business funeral home, undertaker business after his retirement from the police due to some accident of sorts. He lives in the funeral home, together with the dead (corpses) he is handling and the former assistant (and lover) of his belated father. In the first episode he gets a new young assistant, a metal alto male Gothic without a drivers license and with many alternative ideas about life and the world in general. This alone stands for lots of very funny and crazy moments in the conversations. The writing here is excellent! Then there is Anne Maria, Luc's former police detective (and maybe lover you think?) who is now the city's police inspector and her officers.

The whole idea is that Luc - although not official police anymore, can't stay away from solving cases, especially about the dead people he has to pick up at crime scenes and has to work on in his funeral home.

The fact that the actors speak Swiss German is no problem for me, because I speak both German and French (the language has a little bit of both) but hey, there are subtitles in Dutch and English, so please don't let that be your downfall missing out on this little gem.

We speak of a crime series with lots of serious notes here, but the comical twists and characters make it very enjoyable to watch. Season 2 works towards a very shocking and intricate finale, so don't think it's the easiest watch you ever had.

Summary: great writing, great acting, witty as well as very serious, good solid and current murder cases, very very enjoyable to watch!

The Bridge (2011–2018)
10/10
Brilliant Scandinavian series
10 October 2015
This show gets 10 out of 10 from me. I binged the whole season 2 on Netflix in the last 2 days. It's eerie how good Sofia Helin is playing this autistic detective, almost unreal. So much is good, I don't even know where to begin. The acting, the storytelling, the opening song, the character development, the relationships, the camera work, the filming of the bridge, the pace, not too fast, not too slow.

What I especially like is that all the people act like European people, sorry for that, I mean they have that sober European sobriety, nothing is overdone, no exaltations, even in dying and death.

There's only one tiny little problem: you have to keep watching every second, because you can't understand without the subtitles... :) Although I found out that quite some words are similar to Dutch words, but not enough to follow the script.

The Mentalist: Red John (2013)
Season 6, Episode 8
8/10
Tame but okay ending.
11 January 2015
I do not agree with all the negative feedback here. OK, it might have been slightly disappointing yes, but series tend to build expectations amongst their fans, that can't be met. Not equally for everybody.

I myself kind of liked this ending to the 10yo RJ-chase. Since we knew of 'the list' and 'the handshake' (no spoilers there, are there?) you could've come up yourself with the possibility that this whole thing would end rather tame, like it did.

I see this show - a bit like Dexter - as a crime comedy with many good working habits. The couch, the always being or trying to be asleep of Jane, the constant eating everywhere, the tea, Cho being so 'distant but sexy as hell', etc etc. So RJ was one of the working habits, the underlying need for the show, but got worn out a bit. It had to end and the way it ended was full of hope, mid season, so you knew there was coming more.

I still like the rest of se6 and starting with 7 now. There are not many series that capture me all seasons through. This one does. Jane is a nutter, but what's not to like about him.

(my only thing is that I'm not the biggest fan of Lisbon, her speaking annoyes me, every word that comes out of her, sorry Lisbon)
